How things have changed

I'm a fairly new grandmother but not that old but am I the only one to think that child care has changed out of all proportion. I've already posted about car seats but my daughter has just told me that if she takes her daughter out of nursery for a two week holiday they still have to pay as if she were attending in order to keep her place there which amounts to about £500. This can't be right surely. The nursery get paid for not looking after my grandchild.

That's how it works in most places Angib my D had to pay if GS didn't attend and that was 7 yrs ago.

Not sure why this is under Arts & Crafts?

Of course it's standard practice. The nursery still has to pay staff, heat and maintain the building. Do you imagine they get another child in to make up the shortfall while your family goes on holiday? Of course, they could do that, but then there would not be a place for your little moppet when she wanted to return.

Get real. They're running a business.

Sorry meant to be under Chat. Don't know how to move it. I'm obviously out of touch with the real world.

Ask GNHQ to move it.

Of course you have to pay - nurseries would go out of business if parents did not pay every time a registered child chose to take a day off. I cannot imagine why you would expect it to be otherwise!

Imagine yourself trying to run a nursery business and your income went up and down, but your overheads remained the same. Just not viable.

The nursery has expenses which they still have to pay, whether your grandchild is there or not. There are the wages of the employees and all the indirect employment expenses - and there are regulations about how many there must be in proportion to the number of children enrolled. They can't cut down on someone's pay because there will be one child less this week. Then there is the rent of the building and heating it, plus many other things.

This hasn't changed since my children were young. If anything, the expenses are higher now.

I think it is playgroups staffed by mainly volunteers and where the mother's stay which only charge when the child attends. One my twin DGS go to most weeks only charge when they go and only charge for one child! But it is run by the church although not 'religious'.

Angib should the nursery tell a member of staff that as the ratios are down they wont be needed for a fortnight(unpaid)
