Reading about crime in your lovely village reminded me that I have had a few things stolen over the years. I won't list them all yet but one was our trailer. It was packed ready for the dump and as my neighbour was sharing the load I presumed he had borrowed it. We didn't miss it for about a week and never got it back.

My engagement ring and eternity ring went missing when having ‘snag’ works done on our new house 23 years ago.

We were burgled while living overseas. We'd gone on holiday, taxi early one morning and the next day got a call from our housekeeper saying we'd been burgled. Not much taken, thank goodness but strangely the money box my daughter had with one of those puzzles made up of squares on top had been re-arranged. I think they knew there was cash inside but couldn't work out how to get to it and didn't want to take it with them. Where we lived was an area known for landing of illegal immigrants from China. Luckily our housekeeper had stayed at a friend's that night

Some people will steal anything. I had hand knitted jumpers that were my daughters, stolen from my washing line. There were 6 flats shared the drying area. I later saw one of my neighbours daughters wearing one of them. I knew it because I recognised my own knitting.

Sundaze

My underwear off the washing line! shock

I had pegged out one summer's evening, putting the underwear in the middle of the rotary line, hidden by tops etc.
We sat in the dining room, overlooking the garden until bedtime.

The next morning I went to get the washing in as it had dried overnight-to find every pair of my pants missing!

I was initially shocked- the garden wasn't overlooking, and had a 2 metre brick wall all around.
I then became worried that I would find the missing items strewn down the road, as unfortunately for the knicker nicker, they were not my best ones, more along the lines of apple catchers blush.

Funnily enough, it never happened again!grin

Oooh shades of Arnold Layne!

I had a cast iron wall-mounted planter stolen, plants and all, and an antique boot scraper. Some scaffolders stole my gardening tub. An axe went from an outhouse. I never got anything back and suspected travellers who were hanging around touting for jobs. The effrontery of these thieves!

We had lead stolen from our roof. Didn’t hear a thing. The thieves rolled it up in the early hours ready to collect, when a neighbour reported them to the police. Two months later they came back to try again. It’s heavy stuff to carry but they managed it. Roof now covered in lookalike rubber.

I’ve never had a burglary but things have gone missing and my OH gives things of mine away if he thinks I don’t use them enough !

When I was at uni a friend told us he had chained up his bike to a lamppost through the front wheel. When he came out of lectures, someone had taken the back wheel off his bike. He walked to the nearest bike shop and bought a new back wheel. When he got back to the lecture hall, someone had nicked the frame, leaving just the front wheel chained to the lamppost!

I had my handbag stolen from my tent at a festival once. I found odd items from it on the ground nearby as if the thief had been rifling through it. I eventually found the bag poking out from under someone else’s tent. My purse was still in the bag but the cash had gone. They had also stolen my mobile phone and my vaping pipe. Luckily my debit card and car keys were still in the bag otherwise I really would have been stuck.

My mum, who was always very canny, kept an old handbag o a chair by her front door. In it she had an unused purse with old , pre euro , foreign coins and "dummy" credit cards . There was also old makeup, tissues, combs etc in there. It looked just as if she had come in and left her bag there. If any opportunist burglar grabbed it they wouldn't have found one thing of value in it.and mum figured it was better than someone trying to go further into her house. Fortunately she was never robbed

A dd once thought she’d had her purse nicked at Waterloo station in the rush hour.

But she checked at Lost Property the next day, and lo, some kind soul had handed it in. Given that she’d evidently managed to drop it, with all those thousands of people milling and charging around, that really did restore one’s faith in human nature.

I once had my bag snatched from the passenger seat of my car, while I was waiting in the rain and dark to turn left on to a busy main road.

The bloke opened the door and said, ‘Excuse me...’ - as if he was about to ask the way - and just too late I saw his eyes drop to my bag as he grabbed it and legged it.,

Talk about a lesson in always using the central locking!!

I bet he’d just been waiting there for a suitable female mug. There was very little cash and ccs were stopped straight away, but it was a nice new leather bag that dh had given me.?

I read a lovely story some time back, true or untrue not sure, of an elderly lady who was mugged and had her bag stolen. She went to the Police to report the crime, but was laughing as she did so. Police asked what was in the bag, and why was she laughing, and she replied that it was an old bag she only took out when walking the dog, to carry the dog's poo bags!!! I'd love to have seen the culprit's face as they opened the bag...

When I think about it I have had 2 cars stolen , one was found burnt out! The other was recovered ! Had my handbag stolen from the kitchen in my last house! Had my purse stolen from a staff room when I was working in an ice cream parlour in Sydney! Was burgled at my last house, all of my jewellery was taken apart from a wishbone ring with a diamond in the setting! We didn’t get any of it back and it was very unusual so easy to spot! Consequently my daughter and had insurance money so I took her to New York for her 18th plus bought her a ring to keep as she won’t inherit that jewellery now apart from what I wear permanently!

We had four bottles of out of date lager, stolen from the back door area, by a delivery driver. I had put them to one side to empty them before recycling them in the bin, when the door bell rang . After he'd gone, my bottles were gone too...... and they were 6 months out of date! Lol.

Back in the mid 70s I was a student in halls of residence. I was doing teacher training and we all had to learn the recorder. My recorder was stolen from my room. I thought someone was giving me a hint!!! Then my purse went missing and a very distinctive towel. My friend had her toothbrush taken. Another girl had some earrings taken. A girl further up the corridor found them in her waste bin. A year or so after we left I was the bridesmaid for one of my closest uni friends who had been in the room next to me. I stayed at her home the night before the wedding. There in the bathroom was my towel, still with my name tape on it. I was stunned. Our mystery kleptomaniac had been found. The trouble is I didn't know what to do or say, so I just left it there and said nothing!

We were burgled during the night but luckily DS was staying at the time. He heard the burglar rummaging in the car and rang 999. The burglar legged it but the first officer on the scene was a dog handler with an Alsatian. The dog took off like a shot and caught the burglar about half a mile away. He was a well known young offender and got locked up for 6 months.

A few years ago I took my car to one of these car wash places where they hand wash it for you. It was a pleasant summer afternoon so I sat on the provided bench and read my book whilst waiting.
The following day I was going shopping and discovered that my walking stick was missing from the car, I don't use it all the time which is why I wasn't using it at the car wash and didn't notice it missing at the time. I knew it had been in the car before the car wash as I'd used it earlier in the day.
So I went back to the car wash and spoke to one of the guys there, he said he'd ask around and could I call back in the following day.
I went back and there was my walking stick, the handle had been broken and I was told that one of the guys had seen it and thought it would be good for his nan, so took it (the cheeky plucker)! They wouldn't tell me who had taken it and when I suggested that I might report the incident to the police I was met with a couple of burly looking men who made it clear that I'd got my stick back and should be grateful, despite the fact that it had been broken.
I didn't report it because this car wash is only 2 streets from my home and I was concerned that there might be repercussions from them but needless to say, I've not been back there to get the car washed since!

At one house I lived in, I was burgled three times. I was widowed and lived alone. Each time, Electrical goods and jewellery were taken and often my handbag, which was always downstairs. The last time this happened, it was early in the morning around 6.00am, and I heard the noise downstairs. I called down to my cats (I had three at the time) telling them to be quiet, as I was not going to get up that early! Of course, I came down at my usual time of 7.00am to find the back door open and drawers ransacked. I never got anything back that I lost! I reduced the height of the hedge at the back of the property, and had a security shutter installed, as in every case, the burglar had pried open one of the kitchen windows to gain entry.

When I was about 17 I was walking to my Saturday job when the bag in my hand was grabbed. I didn't let go and was pulled over. He ran off as other people appeared, but no one helped me up or asked if I was alright!
Also had a purse removed from handbag while out shopping a few years later.
My mother had her engagement ring stolen and she replaced it from the insurance money but the new ring meant nothing. I sold it with some other items a few years ago.

We had our car broken into twice, both times we were visiting family in Liverpool. They smashed the window and could get into the boot from inside. My handbag, DH's golf clubs and our leather jackets were taken. When we got into the car our DS, aged about 6, said 'mum good news, they haven't taken our sweets'. I had a call about 5 years later to say my handbag had been found. it obviously had my details in somewhere, but purse, etc. was gone.

Chaitriona Sun 11-Apr-21 14:43:57

I have had my blue disabled parking badge stolen from my husband’s car twice in different towns. They are worth quite a lot on the black market. The first time I got a call from the town hall saying to pick up my badge. I thought it was the replacement one I had ordered but it was the original badge which had been handed in anonymously. It was strange. Perhaps the thief wasn’t able to fence it and threw it away. My daughter’s explanation was that it was some young kid and his Mum or Gran had said, “What are you doing? This is shameful”. And they handed it back.
