I like all the different national costumes.

Feel sorry for the athletes, waving to an empty stadium!

I m no sports fan at all but I think it’s lovely to see the world coming together so watched the opening and will see little bits It has a great feeling and I thought the Japanese speaker was he the president ? spoke so nicely about how grateful Japan for the help the world gave after their disasters
That ball of drones was fantastic so very cleverly done

Thinking about this it struck me that although I have no interest at all in sport, I am very interested in theatre. The Opening is much more theatre than sport.

The solemnity of it makes me laugh, though. It’s only sports!

“Only sport”. That’s very dismissive. It’s very important, and rightly so, to many people who train for years, and is symbolic of nations coming together, so why should it not be solemn ?

No. I love the Olympics and will be glued to some of the sports action, but we usually only watch the highlights of the opening ceremonies. Though in 2012, I switched on not expecting to watch it for long - we were going out. Twenty minutes later we cancelled our plans and watched the whole glorious lot. Happy days. smile

No, didn't watch, no intention of doing so. The Olympic Committee have acted in their own interests and we refuse to support them.

I see it more as supporting the athletes.

No never watch, I find sport incredibly boring.

Yes. I thought it was really well done in the circumstances. Looking forward to watching various sports. Some of which I know zero about but often they are engaging and fun. We need something to focus on - but - as with the other sports I don’t like to see it dominating the tv. We need variety and choice. Other than that - happy days.

Anyone else remember the last time Japan hosted the Olympics? 1964, I think. I remember the catchy theme tune...

I enjoy the Olympics, watched the opening ceremony and felt so sad for the athletes

The athletes are just happy to be there and taking part. Although most get to the Opening Ceremony in normal times, never all of them. Some sports actually commence prior to that Ceremony so those athletes do not take part, neither do those who will commecing their competitions early the following day. So many countries participating - wonderful to see - goo that the world can come together in this way,.

I have the most wonderful memories of the 2012 Games when I was fortunate enough to be GamesMaker. The atmosphere, not just at the Games but in all parts of London was so great - happy and togetherness.

I thought that the incredible real-time Globe that was created from ones must be something that will go down in Olympic History.
