I like all the different national costumes.

Feel sorry for the athletes, waving to an empty stadium!

The athletes are just happy to be there and taking part. Although most get to the Opening Ceremony in normal times, never all of them. Some sports actually commence prior to that Ceremony so those athletes do not take part, neither do those who will commecing their competitions early the following day. So many countries participating - wonderful to see - goo that the world can come together in this way,.

I have the most wonderful memories of the 2012 Games when I was fortunate enough to be GamesMaker. The atmosphere, not just at the Games but in all parts of London was so great - happy and togetherness.

I thought that the incredible real-time Globe that was created from ones must be something that will go down in Olympic History.

I enjoy the Olympics, watched the opening ceremony and felt so sad for the athletes

Anyone else remember the last time Japan hosted the Olympics? 1964, I think. I remember the catchy theme tune...

Yes. I thought it was really well done in the circumstances. Looking forward to watching various sports. Some of which I know zero about but often they are engaging and fun. We need something to focus on - but - as with the other sports I don’t like to see it dominating the tv. We need variety and choice. Other than that - happy days.

No never watch, I find sport incredibly boring.

Maggiemaybe Fri 23-Jul-21 19:05:08

I see it more as supporting the athletes.

Esspee Fri 23-Jul-21 18:24:35

No, didn't watch, no intention of doing so. The Olympic Committee have acted in their own interests and we refuse to support them.

Maggiemaybe Fri 23-Jul-21 18:16:39

No. I love the Olympics and will be glued to some of the sports action, but we usually only watch the highlights of the opening ceremonies. Though in 2012, I switched on not expecting to watch it for long - we were going out. Twenty minutes later we cancelled our plans and watched the whole glorious lot. Happy days. smile

Thinking about this it struck me that although I have no interest at all in sport, I am very interested in theatre. The Opening is much more theatre than sport.

The solemnity of it makes me laugh, though. It’s only sports!

“Only sport”. That’s very dismissive. It’s very important, and rightly so, to many people who train for years, and is symbolic of nations coming together, so why should it not be solemn ?

BlueBelle Fri 23-Jul-21 17:46:08

I m no sports fan at all but I think it’s lovely to see the world coming together so watched the opening and will see little bits It has a great feeling and I thought the Japanese speaker was he the president ? spoke so nicely about how grateful Japan for the help the world gave after their disasters
That ball of drones was fantastic so very cleverly done

ninathenana Fri 23-Jul-21 17:36:52

Pretty sure I have never watched an opening or closing ceremony or much of what happens in between ??

timetogo2016 Fri 23-Jul-21 16:13:45

No.

Calendargirl Fri 23-Jul-21 16:11:54

Watched the 2012 one, expecting it to be rubbish.

How wrong I was!

Absolutely blown away, felt so proud.

No, not watching this one though.

When i was a kid i liked the ice dancing on the winter olympics. But aside from then, just not for me..i had a neighbour once years ago, who had her electric cut off so she asked me if she could put a long cable through my window so she could just watch wimbledon.-i agreed as i thought she meant JUST THE FINAL-but no, she watched the whole blooming fortnight! (No guesses how she ran up her electric bill then!) And probably mine too!?

Alegrias1 Fri 23-Jul-21 15:26:01

Oh, the doves... ?

Nannan2 Fri 23-Jul-21 15:21:23

Oh and i think they sneaked snooker & possibly rugby& swimming in somewhere too...?

Nannan2 Fri 23-Jul-21 15:20:17

Nope, sick of all the sports on tv in summer- i wouldn't mind if there was a break - but we go from one to another and some even overlap.we had the footy and the racing and the tennis now its olympics etc etc etc...so no- same as Daisend1.?

Grandma70s Fri 23-Jul-21 15:11:49

Nobody could be less interested in sport than I am, but I do always watch theOlympics opening ceremony. I enjoy seeing something so international, and all the different nationalities and costumes. The Americans appeared to be dressed as comedy burglars, in stripy tops and masks,

I shan’t be watching any of the actual sports/games, though, and resent it taking over television for the next couple of weeks.

ginny Fri 23-Jul-21 15:11:30

No not watching. I wish all contestants well and wish them luck but have no interest in watching at all.

jusnoneed Fri 23-Jul-21 14:57:22

Have never watched one yet.

Jaxjacky Fri 23-Jul-21 14:49:00

No.

Lucca Fri 23-Jul-21 14:30:50

I’m a silly sod who cries at loads of things, probably that too if I’d seen it.

BlueBelle Fri 23-Jul-21 14:29:02

Am I the only silly sod that wants to cry when I see countries with just two or three members I ve no idea why

leeds22 Fri 23-Jul-21 14:27:37

Nope
