I usually ask my daughters if I am worried about the mutton effect, and they are very honest.in fact they persuaded me to buy skinny jeans!!

same here, I was morphing into dangerous territory in M&S at about 55, when my 24 year old daughter took me in hand. She is a loss to the world of personal shopping. I'm now back to dressings as I did when younger - being retired helps of course as I only have to please myself, not a work environment.

You are all making me feel very guilty. I am afraid I am turning into mutton dressed as scrag end. I am now sliding into my winter wardrobe of jogging trousers (Matalan men's - fiver a pop) and old T shirts topped with the inevitable fleece. As the weather turns colder I will add thermal undies. Foot wear - comfy and built to accommodate orthopaedic insoles. I do have some trendier outfits for when I go out - but not many, if I'm honest. Oh dear, I fear I have Let Myself Go.

If you have developed a look and feel comfortable then go with it. We are the generation who didn't have to dress like our mothers when we were teenagers and don't have to look our grandmothers now. I went through a 'grown up' phase in my forties when I always wore suits for work and regret it now. I'll only change my look if my daughter tells me to and so far she, and my grand daughter, are both happy.

vegas; you sound just like me [even down to the insoles!]. I never, ever thought I would wear a fleece but now I live in them. And, when it's cold I wear a Newcastle United hat indoors.

Of course, we are all mutton but we don't have to dress as mutton – or lamb, for that matter. It sounds to me gettingonabit that you have your own very stylish way of doing things, so I shouldn't worry.

tegan - I realised I'd hit rock bottom when I asked myself 'Can I possibly nip to the shops dressed like this?' and always came up with the answer 'Yes.'

I think it all started when I found it took me longer and longer to look decent and, excluding special occasions there just weren't enough hours in the day. And I found that, when I wore make up I got fed up of having to take it off before I went to bed. Although I'd often fall asleep with it on. In my youth I felt that make up looked better the next morning but that didn't work as I aged. But I also agree with the OP in that there isn't really a fashion for young and old any more. I mean, isn't it great that we can wear clothes of any length and not just mini skirts [never had the legs for those] or 'maxi' skirts. And the Asian influence of floaty scarves is just wonderful as is the Scandinavian influence of woolly ones [thank you, The Killing and the Bridge].

My favourite jeans are my straight leg jeans which I like to wear with ballet type shoes, a long top and usually a cardigan. I love cardigans and have a few, short sleeved, 3/4 sleeved, bright coloured, navy, ribbed and bulky.

Your outfit sounds okay to me getting, the casual look for women. It can look more mature and classy for older women or trendy for younger.

Oh to have the figure for "skinnys".
I do wear trousers in winter but only when it's cold enough to cover up in a long coat I don't possess a fleece or joggers.

I starved myself for my DD wedding in March. I then went to Derby, as we have no clothes shops where I live, when I see real shops, not online, I am like a kid in a sweetshop, I bought many pairs of skinny jeans and every thing else I could fit In cases, now 6moths on I am struggling to get them on. Must try harder

Will race you hebrideanlady, I am determined to be more slender by July next year. Need to be to climb Crogary (a promise I made to myself the year I found I had to have a kidney removed) must get fitter and slimmer to do it next year. You can come and we will have a picnic at the top
