When we have children in terrible poverty in this country. This money could have gone on Hospitals, Education and child poverty.

I do love Prince William but this is un acceptable.

You forgot to blue it!

I couldn't agree more with you Tab12. After all her mother survived in more humble surroundings! X

Eloethan Wed 19-Mar-14 20:37:24

I am not a royalist and, unsurprisingly, I think this is a disgrace.

Lilygran Wed 19-Mar-14 20:45:35

But even the Mirror doesn't say they managed the refurb! What about all the government contracts that have been mismanaged over the last few years? PFI, ATOS, Capita. G4S, A4E - the list is endless! Done on our behalf but not by us.

It's an historic building. Part of history. All the great palaces and castles need to be maintained. The totals pay for the internal decorations and the furnishings themselves.

jinglbellsfrocks Wed 19-Mar-14 20:48:40

Royals. Not totals. hmm

Nonu Wed 19-Mar-14 20:56:00

No particular surprise there then eh !!
Considering Charles , the apple never falls far from the tree !!
wink

Ana Wed 19-Mar-14 20:58:56

Nonu, what do you mean?

Nonu Wed 19-Mar-14 21:00:58

Charles like his grandmother before him is wildly extravagant . Suppose the Duchy of Cornwall pays for him though .

Tegan Wed 19-Mar-14 21:45:41

The NHS has got to save 40 billion pounds over the next few years so I suppose a refubishment like that is a drop in the ocean compared to that amount.

Why does a family of three need a 20-room apartment?

Ashmore32 Wed 19-Mar-14 22:02:03

I wonder how much of the 40 'billion?' will be taken away from patient services and front line staff while preserving managers and clipboard box tickers?

there is a lot of waste in the NHS and while productivity has gone up, i.e. 3 day stays instead of 3 weeks when I started the quality sadly is often l;caking. I am a frustrated nearly retiree who despairs for the future of the NHS the way the changes are happening for change sake, creating development roles to make them happen.

i thought I saw Buck House was due for an extensive series of repairs. Perhaps the tourists could pay for a bit more....

Rosannie Wed 19-Mar-14 22:08:51

We toured in North East Scotland last summer and visited the Castle of Mey which is the (relatively) modest home, the only house that belonged to the Queen Mother. It had an ancient rusty fridge that she refused to replace because it still worked, simple furniture that she bought locally in Thurso and threadbare carpets. I'm not a big Royal fan but I got a feel for a thrifty lady living in that wild and windy place.

annodomini Wed 19-Mar-14 22:30:00

Given that the estimated cost of Trident replacement was predicted, five years ago, to be £130 billion, surely the money could be better spelt on the Health and Care, though I am sure that someone will immediately tell me I am being naive.

annodomini Wed 19-Mar-14 22:32:43

She didn't exactly live there, Rosannie. At best, she was probably there for a few weeks in the year while the rest of her time was in the comparative luxury of Clarence House. I believe I have heard that she was a keen angler and that was the reason she spent time in the North of Scotland.

Rosannie Wed 19-Mar-14 22:50:17

I know she didn't live there, but I got the impression that the house was where she could be herself rather than the public Clarence House person. I have no Royal allegiance to defend here just telling what I saw. I liked what I saw, it enabled me to see a person who married a Royal, not a 'Royal person '

Penstemmon Wed 19-Mar-14 22:56:08

The toilets for the 'public' to use in Buck House are not as smart as some department stores but I am not sure I want my taxes to pay for them to be upgraded! More important that hospital / school facilities etc are top standard first.

merlotgran Wed 19-Mar-14 23:01:31

They didn't come much more 'Royal' than the Queen Mum, Rosannie

KP is a tied house, albeit a stonking great big one. It stands to reason it should be used to house the junior Royals - Prince Harry will occupy the accommodation vacated by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

A royal residence is bound to be expensive to refurbish.

Rosannie Wed 19-Mar-14 23:01:57

Sorry Tab12 I deviated from your original post which is a very valid comment that should be debated, I just didn't understand the connection to Charles' Grandmother!

Rosannie Wed 19-Mar-14 23:09:42

Well pardon my ignorance but I thought Royal was you being part of the line of succession, when she married she didn't envisage being Queen.

merlotgran Wed 19-Mar-14 23:11:40

That's why I used inverted commas, Rosannie

gillybob Wed 19-Mar-14 23:17:21

Exactly Absent Why indeed?

Rosannie Wed 19-Mar-14 23:36:32

Apologies Merlot, I misinterpreted your inverted commas, they are open to interpretation ?

TAB12 Thu 20-Mar-14 08:44:45

It just saddens me so much that all that money wasted, when it is so desperately needed elsewhere. It shouldn't be allowed sad
