flowersHappy Valentine's Day everyone.flowers Being single, I have no-one to buy me anything today so I have chocolates and flowers coming with my Tesco order later and my dvd's of some wonderful films arrived Friday so that is me sorted. A lovely meal of beef stroganoff on order and a cup of tea or twenty. [roast chicken] brew

What will you be doing or who will you be sharing your day with? smile

I'm pretty sure DH's mum used to buy his Valentines day cards for him when we were courting. He's not one for shops. (well, I think that's why I don't get one!) Never mind, I have already eaten a good deal of my local Co-op's stock of strawberry hearts. smile

jinglbellsfrocks Sat 14-Feb-15 09:37:41

I usually send something jokey - and chocolatey - to the GSs. Didn't even get round to that this year. shock

jinglbellsfrocks Sat 14-Feb-15 09:39:48

I think that cartoon is spot on Bags. Men and women are totally different when it comes to this "love" thing. I think.

jinglbellsfrocks Sat 14-Feb-15 09:41:39

I would willingly swop that bloody roast chicken emoti for a heart one. hmm

thatbags Sat 14-Feb-15 09:43:35

anya, I think one Valentine's Day thread will suffice for all points of view, as per usual on gransnet.

thatbags Sat 14-Feb-15 09:44:29

I mean everyone can express their own point of view without being told, politely or otherwise, to piss off and start another thread.

thatbags Sat 14-Feb-15 09:46:17

I agree with ariadne. If you love it, enjoy it. Similarly, if like me, it leaves you feeling 'sour' (not about love but about commercialism of love), then express yourself too. Gransnet is comprehensive and inclusive.

I Luke the fact that DH buys me a card and a silky little something! I know he loves me anyway but a little bit more sunshine doesn't go amiss!

lefthanded Sat 14-Feb-15 09:52:12

We buy each other cards, but apart from that the day is "business as usual". I shall be cooking dinner - just like every other day.

Greyduster Sat 14-Feb-15 09:55:09

I said to DH yesterday (as I say every year) "don't buy me a card - I haven't got you one " (big romantic, me!) and he went out ("I'm just going to fill the car up") and bought a large bunch of red roses instead. So I felt guilty and made a Victoria sponge, cut out three little hearts, sandwiched them together with lemon curd and put fondant icing on the top (left over from GS's birthday cake), pipe on top "I love you"- job's a good 'un! Happens every year, I'm afraid. I also made one for GS who is coming tommorrow, cos I love him as well!

loopylou Sat 14-Feb-15 09:55:19

I hate the commercialism of everything but DH gave me a beautiful bouquet so I'm feeling very spoilt grin! He always gives me a card but this is a real surprise!

Jane10 Sat 14-Feb-15 10:12:36

Well I got an odd card and a box of reduced price biscuits -almost past its use by date (2days to go!). Can't complain as I'll be spending tonight with the 2 other males in my life -GSs aged almost 2 and almost 4. Babysitting for DD. Will leave a nice(ish) meal for DH!

I just had a 'fat finger' moment and seem to have accidentally reported a post... not sure which one! Would it show here? Not sure how it works, perhaps I would have had to confirm it. Apologies to the poster if it went through.

Happy Valentine's Day to all. flowers

Soutra Sat 14-Feb-15 10:24:34

Today's Matt cartoon in the Torygraph said it all. His archetypal "gormless man" is shown leaving a card on the hall table:

"Roses are red, champagne is bubbly
Have a lovely day, I'll be at the rugby"

Jane10 Sat 14-Feb-15 10:27:48

Love it soutra!

ninathenana Sat 14-Feb-15 10:30:11

Exactly what thatbags said in her 09.44 post

Soutra Sat 14-Feb-15 10:33:22

Sorry! Hadn't spotted that blush

Soutra Sat 14-Feb-15 10:35:24

Oh I see what you mean ninathenana thought you were "dissing" my attempt to describe the Matt cartoon!

janeainsworth Sat 14-Feb-15 10:56:45

Yes well said bags @9.44.

love it Soutra smile

kittylester Sat 14-Feb-15 11:10:55

Just reread these and spotted my typos (bloody phone!!!) no, Luke does not buy me silky littles things for Valentines Day - whoever Luke might be and I wouldn't fit into a silky little anything anyway!! blush

ffinnochio Sat 14-Feb-15 11:25:12

Yep, a high-five to B's post of 9.44

It wouldn't be the end of the world if we didn't bother about Valentine's Day. It's not a specific day for us to express our love but to receive a bunch of flowers was a lovely gesture from DH and I wouldn't have had the heart to tell him he was silly as I just look upon it as buying into all the hype and commercialism which we both know exists..

What's not to like if your DH wants to give you flowers?

janerowena Sat 14-Feb-15 12:18:20

I got flowers! And a giant bar of my favourite Galaxy. And a lovely card.

Years ago we couldn't afford any of it, we used to make our own cards, he would cook dinner and I would bake a heart-shaped rich chocolate cake for dessert.

I was wondering what I would do if he weren't here, and I would do what rubylady does, and give myself a treat.

I always buy him a box of his favourite Hotel Chocolat, and he takes me out for a meal. I tell him a bunch of any flowers will do, as long as they aren't dead, and a card, but he is the romantic, not me. I do cringe at the commercialisation, but then I do at xmas too. And Easter. And Mother's Day.

ginny Sat 14-Feb-15 16:28:27

We don't 'do' valentines day but we have been happily married for nearly 39 years. Much prefer a little surprise gift or treat when it is not expected.

Coolgran65 Sat 14-Feb-15 17:43:49

I don't like the hype of Christmas, Mother's Day, Valentines etc. etc.

DH does do the Valentine's bit with full gusto. It may be because we are both 'second time around' ..... or maybe not.
I'd be happy with a gesture, however I also buy DH a Valentine's gift - I would never want to quash his enthusiasm.
Today he gave me a lovely new charm for my Pandora bracelet and a gift voucher for my hairdresser. I gave him a gorgeous dark purple sweater from TK Maxx.
