What goes on in Britain today seems to be that a majority are working on a self for filling prophesy of doom and gloom as a result of voting out of the EU. When what is required is for every man,, woman, and child, to imitate the action of the tiger; Stiffen the sinews, summon up the blood, Disguise fair nature with hard-favour'd purpose. Do not expect a soft landing! For now is the time of hard resolution.
We need to start laying track on High speed 2 and Cross Rail 2. Put down a new runway at Heathrow or Gatwick, NOW.
All I hear is we need to have a debate on this and that. No we don’t! Make MADE IN BRITAIN a reality. Let us become a “Can Do” nation again and stop sitting around waiting for some else to take the initiative and so getting left behind.

That's really bad, abbey. It shouldn't have been allowed. What was the union doing? Disgraceful.

That is not an unusual tale sadly.

There is a chasm between those at the 'coal face' so to speak who understand this happens and those who are/have been unaware of such things happening. Some live with this happening , others only talk about it syndrome. I keep mentioning the EU Posted Workers Directive as an example of how Under Cutting wages has been widely used as just one example.

My area has a lot of warehousing and it is well known what has happened re employment. I think this is one of the reasons behind so many Labour heartlands voting leave. I think this is the case in my part of the midlands .

I do however honestly believe it is not the employed immigrant workers who are blamed as relations are very good but the 'system' has seen to have failed the indigenous worker.

Alice16 I think Abbey is relating actualities whereas your post seems to be more about what may happen.
Not a criticism - just an observation from reading her posts and yours.

I know of people who lost their jobs in local warehouses many years ago when EU workers were brought in through active recruitment in Eastern Europe. I don't know how the firms managed to get rid of local workers and employ EU workers on lower wages through agencies, with organised rented housing and transport to and from work, but they did.

Brexit was bound to cause financial uncertainty in the short-term, who knows what the long-term will bring; we just don't know as yet.

Abby Thanks for your posts from the 'real world'. Same here with a friend who worked in office furniture fitting. They made him redundant and brought in Russian workers. Shoddy work and communication problems cost the company 10s of 1,000s of pounds. They had to call my friend back. His attitude was: you want me, you pay me, and they did.
But I'm afraid most on here only want gloom and doom blue links from the Gaudian. Because that newspaper really knows what it's like in the 'real world' don't they?

If the point of the link was child poverty, I am puzzled as to why the photo showed a well-dressed, well-nourished, well-cared for little girl in front of a boarded up shop.
And I am puzzled, too, as to why the five children wet themselves because they were sleeping on the floor and we were led to presume that they ceased being enuretic as soon as they had beds.

I suppose this is journalism

Other images of Skem (as it's known locally) are available.

Yes, that's journalism Jalima
