Knighthoods, and some other honours being devalued

Seeing the number of athletes and others being given major honours while still very young may make honours appear with it and more 'relevant' to younger people (or at least that is probably the government's fond belief) but I think they devalue them.

I understood honours were for lifetime achievement, when someone had gone over and beyond their duty or shown devotion to duty over a long period - which applies to people at every level from local community workers to the famous.

For example, why should Andy Murray or Mo Farrah get knighthoods now? Yes, they are both great athletes, yes they have achieved astounding levels, but surely Andy Murray's knighthood should come at the end of his playing career as the final accolade, the same for Mo Farrah, I know he will have a shorter career but I am sure his contributions to his sport will be continue even after he ceases performing.

So many of those given knighthoods in the past for a couple of sporting achievements have seen the recipient sink without trace, once their moment in the spotlight ends,

Should writers, artists, poets, composers etcnot be recognised?

BlueBelle Sat 31-Dec-16 15:32:45

I think it a really daft system and feel really bah humbug about it and have for ever Victoria Beckham is just a business woman so what! If they have got to give them to 'celebrities' then I think Mo Farrah is a well deserving case his professional life will be coming to an end soon and he has made a big contribution coming from a little refugee lad who couldn't speak English but my overall feeling is Get rid of the darned things they are a farce

and how ridiculous that someone who"gave" £390,000 as a "gift" to the tories should get knighted in return...what a sham these"honours" are ,just a way of perpetuating the class system

vampirequeen "Awards should be for those who go beyond the call of duty not for because someone simply did their job."

Yes, they should go to those who have made a good contribution to our society. These people are supposed to be involved in the running of this country, not just running races.

BlueBelle Sat 31-Dec-16 16:44:25

Well at least running races gets the country gold medals running your own fashion business just lines your own pocket

But I think it's well overdue for a disappearing act in full

NotTooOld Sat 31-Dec-16 16:53:50

I should get one for 'services to Christmas' this year.

Pigglywiggly Sat 31-Dec-16 17:05:40

And does anyone really like Ken Dodd?shock

NotTooOld Sat 31-Dec-16 17:15:01

I thought he was dead.

J52 Sat 31-Dec-16 17:49:05

So did I until I saw a trailer for a TV programme about him! I'm sure he's very nice, but I can't stand him!

merlotgran Sat 31-Dec-16 17:51:41

So Ken Dodd gets a knighthood despite his run in with the tax man whereas Lester Piggott went to prison and was stripped of his.

Pigglywiggly Sat 31-Dec-16 17:59:13

Ken Dodd has a very good publicist (allegedly).

Kittye Sat 31-Dec-16 18:18:34

Too many people getting honours for just doing their jobs. Whole thing has become a joke!!

Anniebach Sat 31-Dec-16 18:21:05

Was not Dodd Acquitted?

vampirequeen Sat 31-Dec-16 20:46:57

Ken Dodd was found to be not guilty.

I think Ken Dodd is incredibly funny. He does more live shows than most young comedians and fills every theatre he performs in. Not bad for a man of 89.

Kittye Sat 31-Dec-16 22:40:23

Ken Dodd funny? I must had no sense of humour?

Kittye Sat 31-Dec-16 22:41:51

Had? Have. Too much NYears wine.

vampirequeen Sun 01-Jan-17 09:01:52

I think Ken Dodd is like Marmite. You either love him or hate him grin

I think it's time to rethink the whole honours thing. It has become far removed from the original intention I think. Too much corruption and pandering to the celebrity culture.

Anniebach Sun 01-Jan-17 09:42:12

I thought the number of athletes honoured this year was great, young people receiving honours ! I am fir it if we must have this list

radicalnan Sun 01-Jan-17 09:44:31

All the time we have these awards we support injustice. The fawning over actors / sportsmen etc is ridiculous, they do jobs they enjoy for excellent money and perks. We already elevate these people beyond their worth and many have sleazy lifestyles alongside their other achievements.......

Time to rescind all the honours and reduce the money paid out to celebs and sportsmen.........we have to get a grip on true worth and as we patently cannot decide what that is we have to let go of awards.

Beckham getting any award, is a slap in the face for women everywhere.............they are parents who exploit themselves and their kids for every penny they can get.......ghastly behaviour that encourages others to think that kids should behave like mini adults. We need a push back against the people who make us miserable with their 'messages' to the rest of us.

Banksy says some fine stuff on advertising but not sure if I am allowed to post it here, worth looking for it on Google.

Playing devil's advocate.
What do you think of Justine's?

Skweek1 Sun 01-Jan-17 09:54:12

I do think Andy deserves his, because he's achieved so many career goalposts that have not been reached in 50/70/100 years and, being brutally honest, he only has another year or two at the top, so does it really matter whether they give it to him this yeae or in 3-4 years when he'll be well past his best. The one I don't think does deserve it is Posh - a failed singer, a WAG who appears to have got hers for being a stick insect - "Services to fashion?" - my MIL tells me that she's done charity work, but when I looked up her fashion empire, discovered (OK, may have sorted out the issue since) that she'd failed to file her accounts and in any case who would be seen dead in her clothes?

Jaycee5 Sun 01-Jan-17 10:03:22

'Services to acting' should mean things like supporting a Theatre, writing books or teaching, getting involved in acting therapy as well as acting as a job. It is well paid, well regarded and awards are given in their dozens (Helen Mirren said that after The Queen she spent two years doing the rounds of premieres and award ceremonies). They don't need an award from the government or Queen as well. Nowadays they are given because people have been in a soap opera for 20 years playing one part.

Anniebach Sun 01-Jan-17 10:04:19

Yet athletes who are a good example to the young are being criticised here. I watched Colin Jackson train, seems some have no idea how these athletes work from a young age .

We have these honours so why not award younger people, not as someone posted, it should be when they are older and done charity work !

Anniebach Sun 01-Jan-17 10:05:39

I don't watch soaps, who has been given an honour from these?
