I ve been on this site as BlueBelle for 4.5 years, recently I ve noticed another poster Bluebelle posting We seem to think similarly so no big problem but the names are so close that I keep getting myself muddled up and thinking 'did I post that' ? so I m sure others must mix us up too
Now I know I can change my name but I m reluctant as I would lose all those years identity No big deal in the scale of things but I m so surprised that when choosing names GN let us be so basically the same
Would you change, or ask the other poster politely first, or just carry on
Don't scream at me that I m a moaner I m not moaning about it, just trying to clarify the best move forward
What would you do ?

Marydoll Mon 21-Aug-17 08:23:22

That's a shame BB, that you are thinking of changing.
I did see a similar poster name and got a bit confused, wondering if it was the same person.
Most sites alert users when they choose a similar username.
Why don't you contact GN to let them know about this.
Perhaps the other poster will read this and offer to change. I would, if I had unwittingly chosen someone else's name.
I hope you get it sorted.

That's disconcerting BlueBelle. I think you should refer to Hq. Presumably, the other name was 'allowed" because 'the computer said 'yes'!

I hadn't noticed the distinction but maybe you could become Bluebelle#1!

For years I was the only kitty of any description but there a couple more now and I find that confusing!!

MawBroon Mon 21-Aug-17 08:26:03

Passing the buck slightly, I find it strange that GNHQ allowed such a similar name.
Perhaps the first user of a username should keep it and subsequent members be asked to choose something different.
The problem really should not arise.
A friendly PM to the other Bluebelle might bear fruit, but runs the risk of being sent to yourself! grin

BlueBelle Mon 21-Aug-17 09:09:16

I have contacted GNHQ by email and the answer I got was you can change your name if you want to which of course I already knew and I didn't find very helpful

Perhaps a pm to Bluebelle is called for .......of course she may have been here for a long time but only just started posting so I may be the one in the wrong, but I think the person who joined last should be the one to change and if that is me then I ll do that

I m not blaming Bluebelle at all but I m also aware that if one of us posted something the other was really opposed to it could cause problems

Thanks for answering I ll let you know x

ninathenana Mon 21-Aug-17 09:25:04

I hadn't noticed blush
I agree it should never have been allowed to happened and that whoever was first should get to keep the name.
I was going to suggest the same as kitty BlueBelle#1 or BlueBellethefirst No1BlueBelle grin

illtellhim Mon 21-Aug-17 09:40:40

I've just spotted it, you're BlueBelle and the other one's Bluebelle. Now, are you the man or is it the other one.

MawBroon Mon 21-Aug-17 09:44:13

Does that matter?

BlueBelle Mon 21-Aug-17 09:44:48

Man ??? Not with you

I have just written a private message to Bluebelle and the message has popped up saying "you cannot send a message to yourself" although I did make sure I d used the different spelling

Bluebelle can you remark on here please?

Luckygirl Mon 21-Aug-17 09:50:52

How very confusing!

There is a Luckygirl (that's me!) and a Luckylegs, which is pretty close.

Lona Mon 21-Aug-17 10:32:24

It happened to me once and I pmd the other member and politely asked if she would change. She rather rudely refused, so I changed mine.
She's never been seen since!!
?

midgey Mon 21-Aug-17 10:36:55

This is a bit weird as the spelling is identical on my iPad, is that how it is or are other people seeing different spelling?

Auntieflo Mon 21-Aug-17 11:03:57

Not quite the same, but on another thread , I noticed this morning, that someone says she/he ?? posts under three different names. Why is that allowed? and why would they want to for heavens sake? Perhaps they just like to add numbers to the responses to their first post. IYSWIM confused

Marydoll Mon 21-Aug-17 11:09:30

I wondered about that one too. Why would anyone want to post under different names?

yogagran Mon 21-Aug-17 11:40:57

So she/he can have an argument with themselves Marydoll grin

I did think it was a bit strange having three names they could post under

Jalima1108 Mon 21-Aug-17 11:48:14

Three different names?
Don't they get confused?
I get confused posting under one name and had to change mine slightly when I had an email problem and had to re-register.

I did think I would find a lovely new name but all were taken (even though I have never seen anyone posting under any names I tried) so I'm surprised that two such similar names were allowed
I'm sorry - I didn't realise there were two BlueB(b)elles.

devongirl Mon 21-Aug-17 11:50:08

BlueBelle, I absolutely understand why you would like to keep your username, having been on here for such a long time. I did change my own username as it was difficult to distinguish myself from another user, and I noticed that it was not applied retrospectively, so all my old posts still had my old username (not really a problem for me as I hadn't been on GN long, though I would have preferred the retrospective change).

Since the PM was emailed to you, it looks as if you will need to contact GNHQ and ask them on your behalf to contact the other user? then a fair thing to do would be for whoever joined first to keep their current name.

By contacting GNHQ hopefully this won't happen again...

seacliff Mon 21-Aug-17 12:02:21

Hi BlueBelle. I think you are the one in East Anglia? I agree it could be rather confusing and surprised it was allowed. Hopefully if the other person hasn't been here long, they might be nice enough to change theirs. It seems the fairest way.

illtellhim Mon 21-Aug-17 12:07:09

By now, you should have noticed that this site is up to a standard and down to a price, just look at all the extra adverts, which isn't all bad, because we just purchased a new Ford Edge. smile

BlueBelle Mon 21-Aug-17 12:20:32

Do you know I am going round in circles with HQ first they told me I can change my name ....I know that
I tried contacting Bluebelle and got a message saying I cant message myself ....so I portrayed that back to HQ they replied ( very quickly) saying the other Bluebelle uses figures not letters so there won't be any confusion ...... well there IS still confusion as I tried messaging Bluebe11e using two 11 s instead of of two ll s only to get a message 'There is no such username' I portrayed this back to HQ and they replied (again quickly) There us only you as Bluebelle on here and anyway anyone can call themselves what they want'
NOW IM TOTALLY CONFUSED
and to add to it I ve no idea what you're on about illtellhim? Who on earth is talking about adverts

So I can't contact the other Bluebelle and HQ seemingly don't want to help Any further ideas ?

Jalima1108 Mon 21-Aug-17 12:37:04

I just did a search and the other poster was called bluebell and doesn't appear to have posted lately unless the search facility is not working properly.

Perhaps the other bluebell has gone?

Jalima1108 Mon 21-Aug-17 12:38:25

I think itellhim is talking to one of her/his alter egos BlueBelle and they probably understand each other even if the rest of us are [conflused]

Jalima1108 Mon 21-Aug-17 12:38:34

or even confused

Oldwoman70 Mon 21-Aug-17 12:51:29

How can people post under different names - I thought we could only have one! When DH was still alive he tried to join but was unable to because I was already a member -
he used his own email address but I assumed they linked the IP address.

dustyangel Mon 21-Aug-17 12:52:52

BlueBelle I noticed it when the other Bluebell posted but it was easier to notice the difference when you were actually blue! Would it be worth you reinstating your profile, (and I can understand why you deleted it) but make it very bland i.e. something like "Grandmother with one GC"
