Just wondering where all us gransnetters are posting from? I know from being on here a while now that we have GNs in the UK, Australia, USA, France and Spain, but anyone from somewhere else and if so, what's it like to live there?

Gillybob I am not far from you. Outskirts of Newcastle Upon Tyne. 20 minutes to the theatres, shops and restaurants of the city, half an hour's drive to the country or the coast. Definitely can be chilly but some of the best beaches and most lovely scenery right on our doorstep smile

The Home Counties.

Lots of lovely scenery, old market towns, within easy reach of London or the south coast.

Tasmania - little island just under mainland Australia.

Scottish Borders south of Edinburgh. Easy reach of city, countyside and sea. My DH's home but I made it mine 45 years ago. I actually hail from New Zealand.
I am very fond of Scotland but I know there are plenty of wonderful places to live. I had my DNA tested recently and found I am almost 70% Irish and Scottish so there you go!

The outskirts of Sydney, Australia. Originally from Glasgow.

I was born on the East Sussex coast, moved to Kent when we married, then moved several times around Kent and London but now on the edge of Wolverhampton and could walk to the south staffs countryside if I ever felt so inclined. I would like to be near the sea again but we are undecided.m

My younger brother started a family tree before he died two years ago and we realised we have always thought we were English (but not the least bit ashamed as we are all supposed to be for some odd reason) but now realise this was unlikely to be true at all.

My Dad’s parents were both Welsh and my Mother’s family are Irish though there is a story of a Spanish sailor who was shipwrecked off the coast during the Spanish Armada and married an ancestor. We bought the DNA testing kit a while back but haven’t got round to it yet! If I take up flamenco dancing we will know the answer! Ole! ?? ??????? ?? ???????

Think I’ll give the bullfighting a miss though. ????‍♀️

I was born in North London, grew up in Suffolk and came to Germany when I left school. Apart from a year in Cambridge as a legal secretary, I have lived in Germany ever since.

After over 40 years here, it's impossible to say what it's like living here. What exactly do you want to know?

Weather? Very similar to the UK, but more extreme heat in the summer and cold in the winter. (I am quite a long way down South)

Cost of living? Much the same as the UK, I think. Some things are cheaper, some are dearer.

Housing? People don't move house much. They rent till they're about 40 then they build a house and live in it till they die, leaving the next generation with a lot of hassle. Houses are about the same price as in the UK, if they ever do get sold, but they will have a cellar and be somewhat more solid and larger but with smaller gardens. Discussing and comparing house prices is just not of interest in everyday conversation.

Health care? It's getting worse as doctors are now retiring in their droves and life is being made impossible for young ones to set themselves up, or, if they are in hospitals, they are treated badly.

Unemployment is generally low but
criminality is on the increase.
The far right nationalists are gaining popularity.
Trains reputedly run on time, but huge numbers are cancelled, held up or run late. I would not risk going to an airport to catch a flight by train.

South Wales ???????

Not far from Dartmoor, Devon. It's beautiful.

I’m not telling you in case you are collating information on GN users and will then use the details you gather on me to hack into my overdraft!

At this moment I am on a (relatively) unspoiled island in the Caribbean but all too soon I will be heading back to Scotland to face a couple of months of winter.
Love Scotland with a passion.

felice Thu 23-Jan-20 12:47:46

Esspee, Scottish by birth and upbringing, I too love Scotland, I am hosting one of the many Burns Suppers being held here this Saturday. I will be doing things like a Scottish Quiz (Spanish lady won last year !!!) Burns poetry, very relevant to today and have 11 nationalities coming including a German and a Dutchman in kilts.
Will have flags hanging outside the house and all things Scottish.
