Conspiracy theories

I absolutely love a good conspiracy theory. The more bizarre the better. My favourite atm is that ancient aliens were so technologically advanced compared to early man that they were mistaken for gods and the reason that we can't find the missing link is that it was created in an alien laboratory when they spliced hominid genes with their own.

I'm also keen on the JFK shooter on the grassy knoll, astronauts saw aliens and their bases on the Moon and that we actually don't exist other than as part of an alien simulator computer programme.

I don't believe any of them but they're fun and tbh just as reasonable in some ways as what we've been told is the 'truth'

Do you have a favourite conspiracy theory?

Stories travelled in Biblical days too - they were a bit slower than the internet, but people have always loved to sit around listening to tales of wondrous happenings.

A traveller from far away, stopping for the night in a wayside dwelling, would "pay" for his meal and bed by recounting the strange things he had encountered. Some of those encounters were true, but embellished for the ocasion, some were ones he had heard other travellers tell - which had themselves been edited and improved in the repeating.

A good story would spread faster than a boring one (just as on the internet) so no wonder legends in many areas have great similarity.

I did mention myths and legends, Eglantine and in fact the Bible stories you mention corroborate those legends of the ancient Greeks, Romans etc
Interesting.

There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio!

Who can't sing!

HootyMcOwlface Sun 16-Feb-20 11:53:26

You’ve all forgotten the Paul McCartney one, where he died in a car crash and has been replaced by a lookalike. (Yeah, as if!)

Eglantine21 Sun 16-Feb-20 11:37:11

I’m convinced we evolved because aliens visited (or maybe were stranded) and spliced their DNA with ours.?

Anybody interested in what the Bible says?

“The sons of god saw the daughters of men were fair and took wives.”
“The Nephilim (giants?) were on the earth in those days and afterwards when the sons of God went to the daughters of men and had children by them.”

Genesis 6.

Curleywirly
Why no more men on the moon? Possible ? hmm theory that mod tech has come 'down to earth' and that its resources are better spent getting its own world sorted before looking at others ?

Callistemon Sun 16-Feb-20 10:12:24

Who is Alex Jones?

I had thought you meant the presenter from the One Show and thought that I'd never heard her propounding any conspiracy theories!

harrigran Sun 16-Feb-20 10:12:14

Give your head a wobble, Americans are communicating with space craft outside of our solar system. In real terms the moon is not that far away.

Chestnut Sun 16-Feb-20 10:08:45

I suggest you watch '8 Days to the Moon and Back' Chemtrail. And why would it be 'physically impossible' to get to the moon and impossible to communicate from it? We have since travelled a lot further than that, so do you think all space travel is faked?

Chemtrail Sun 16-Feb-20 09:40:59

It is physically impossible to get to the moon and impossible to communicate from it .as for history ,it is always documented by the winners,so conspiracy theories or propaganda?

Magrithea Sun 16-Feb-20 08:21:05

@vampirequeen didn't you know that the Earth is a giant supercomputer made by the mice! H2G2 42 is the answer!!!!

suziewoozie Sun 16-Feb-20 07:56:02

Alex Jones is in a class of his own and to say ‘he’s always good for a conspiracy theory’ is horrible given Sandy Hook. The average conspiracy theorist is not interested in uncovering state secrets or fighting for justice. Specific campaigns to uncover serious truths are one thing, the utter vile conspiracy theories re the McCanns and Sandy Hook are quite another. A bit more light and shade doesn’t come amiss.

Eloethan Sat 15-Feb-20 23:58:24

But it appears that some of the events which are, orwould have been described as "conspiracy theories" are, or may be, true.

It took a long time for the British government to admit that soldiers had been exposed to dangerously high doses of radiation during nuclear testing.

A recent programme on the TV suggested that the attack on Pearl Harbour was either allowed to happen in order to convince the American people that the US should join the war, or happened due to poor communications.

In the US, many poor people - particularly black people, prisoners and disabled people - were the victims of numerous secret - and life-changing experiments.

Not all conspiracy theories are ridiculous.

suziewoozie Sat 15-Feb-20 23:20:07

The only aliens I know of are those on here who think Alex Jones and what he did to the Sandy Hook parents is ‘good for a laugh’ and a bit of fun’.

Chestnut Sat 15-Feb-20 22:25:38

Oh dear suziewoozie has dropped in to throw a wet dishcloth on the conversation. Lighten up dear, it's just a bit of fun. Not everything has to be serious or relate to politics. Peace to you ?

Sofijade10 Sat 15-Feb-20 20:58:07

Love it!

Callistemon Sat 15-Feb-20 20:44:26

The only conspiracy theory I don't dismiss is the one about aliens visiting the earth.
I have an open mind about that as there are many unanswered questions about our origins.

Callistemon Sat 15-Feb-20 20:42:11

DS can do that so obviously inherited alien traits from DS and me.

Callistemon Sat 15-Feb-20 20:41:26

I still can't do that Chestnut although I keep persevering. Yes, I was thinking of the charisma thread ?

Elegran Sat 15-Feb-20 20:05:37

Did your U3A talk mention the many stories of people creating crop circles, quizqueen?

suziewoozie Sat 15-Feb-20 18:59:07

I think it’s something to do with having a casual relationship with the truth

suziewoozie Sat 15-Feb-20 18:58:22

Generally speaking I have a theory that there is a direct relationship between being right wing and loving conspiracy theories. I think there is some evidence to support this theory on this thread.

quizqueen Sat 15-Feb-20 18:31:01

I love conspiracy theories and some have been proven to have a lot of truth in them over the years, so shouldn't just be poo-pooed. I went to an excellent talk about crop circles last week with the U3A.

I used to think it was aliens causing all matter of strange things but, because of the distance of travel involved and the fact that we have searching for signals within our galaxy and beyond for years, unsuccessfully, I am more inclined to open my mind now to the possibility of beings from our future returning to contact us, or something inter-dimensionally happening. We would be truly foolish to think our planet is the only one which contains life.

DoraMarr Sat 15-Feb-20 17:35:09

Moon landings: there have been dozens of them
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_missions_to_the_Moon#Missions_by_date
They were stopped because of cost, and also because they were a bit of willy- waving by the US, Russian and Chinese governments and they weren’t really getting anywhere.
I agree, most of the other conspiracy theories are very hurtful to some people. My brother in law lost dozens of friends and associates in the Twin Towers. He had been there the week before. For people to claim that the US government carried it out is incredibly painful. Princess Diana was killed because her chauffeur was drunk and she wasn’t wearing a seatbelt. The inquest in Paris exonerated the paparazzi, but some ( I think two) were charged because they took photos of the crashed car. (They arrived after the crash.) The Sandy Hook conspiracy theory was disgraceful and I think Alex Jones should have been jailed.

Chestnut Sat 15-Feb-20 17:13:51

There is a thread about charisma Callistemon so maybe Mr Spock belongs there. Although sadly I've never met him in person to judge first hand ?
PS: there is actually an emoji for the Vulcan salute which shows how much he has influenced our lives! ?
