TV in these difficult times

Does anyone else think that terrestrial TV channels are not serving us well in these troubled times. This would be a great opportunity for them to get together on one channel to impress us and earn license fee.
A suggestion..... From 9:00am to midnight on BBC2, in conjunction with the other terrestrial channels they could show, in their entirety, those blockbuster serials from years gone by.
For example,, 10:00 am Downton Abbey, every episode of every series one after the other.
11:00 am The Jewel in the Crown
I'm sure everyone could think of things which would help us get through the days.
What other magical programmes can you think of?

You can find 'box sets' on iPlayer etc. I definitely do not want one episode after another on my tv....heaven forbid.

No going back over old and clunky TV shows, just watch Peaky Blinders (on Netfix now as iPlayer took it off) instead.

Larkrise to Candleford, please.

Craftycat Fri 03-Apr-20 11:05:06

I think there would be a lot of unhappy younger people if the TV companies did start screening old box sets even if our age group would welcome it. Oh to see Charles Dance as Guy again in Jewel in the Crown!! I've got the DVD somewhere but no DVD player anymore.
Mind you I did find a very good new serial yesterday by mistake -obviously made for children but got me hooked- The Snow Spider on CBBC.

I guess Survivors would be a bit close to home so how about:

$ A horseman riding by
$ The avenue goes to war
$ Z Cars
$ Dixon of Dock Green

Littleannie Fri 03-Apr-20 11:10:28

Larkrise to Candleford is another one on Britbox

Littleannie Fri 03-Apr-20 11:12:58

A Horseman Riding By is on YouTube, all 13 episodes.

We have Virgin TV. The Good Life, Only Fools and Horses, Last of the Summer Wine, Dad's Army, and more are available on the "Gold" channel 124 on Virgin. Drama channel 130 has many more old series e.g. Lovejoy, Sharpe, Auf Wiedersehen Pet and many more. Agree that I would love to see the whole Downton series, Jewel in the Frown and Forsyte saga among others. The new channel Talking Pictures on 445 has many old B & W films which I am enjoying.

The Cedar Tree..loved that series from the 70's and odd but used to rush home from school to watch Peyton Place.

Does anyone remember Frost in May? A young Patsy Kensit was in early episodes, was a brilliant programme. I must look up to see if it's still available anywhere.

I'm attempting to catch up on some of the recordings I've made over the years and not had time to watch!

Rosiebee Fri 03-Apr-20 11:26:24

We've had the early Morse programmes recorded for months and DH kept threatening to delete them. You can be sure he's glad that we didn't. Yes they're dated, but good yarns and fortunately I can't remember much about them first time round.

Retired65 Fri 03-Apr-20 11:27:44

Nothing I am watching on Tv at the moment except for the news.

My husband likes watching the Talking Pictures channel.

I like watching programmes such as 'Vera', 'Endeavor', 'Hidden', 'Dr. Who' and 'Line of Duty'.

Yes, adverts that picture people congregating are like the ads we see on Antiques Road Show portraying people smoking.

I wonder how soon we will see ads with people keeping six feet away from each other , and the nice people who use product XYZ moving pout of the path of cripples and ancient ladies.

There could be an advert for dog food showing how the kindly dog who eats Wowff has consolled a small child confined to a small flat.

I like old and clunky British films. I bought some on DVD. Yesterday I watched a 1945 Gainsborough film called 'A Place of One's Own' with James Mason and Margaret Lockwood. Quite a good ghost story actually.

What a profile that woman had!

Alexa Fri 03-Apr-20 11:34:55

Oh yes, Craftycat! I was enchanted by The Snow Spider yesterday. What can I say? It has to be seen.

Truffle1 Fri 03-Apr-20 11:35:51

Apparently Andrew Lloyd Webber is going to put some of his shows free on YouTube - that should be a good one to watch.

Shortlegs Fri 03-Apr-20 11:38:43

Um, aren't most of these things available on catch up?

hilarious Fri 03-Apr-20 11:44:51

Does anyone remember The Cedar Tree?

Aepgirl Fri 03-Apr-20 11:47:16

What about Upstairs, Downstairs; Ever decreasing circles; The Brothers.

lindiann Fri 03-Apr-20 11:48:17

Craftycat The Snow Spider was magical and also found Malory Towers which was great smile

Camelotclub Fri 03-Apr-20 11:51:47

Upstairs Downstairs! Thousand percent superior to the vapid Downton.

Littleannie Fri 03-Apr-20 12:07:57

Upstairs Downstairs and Forsyte Saga are on Britbox (not the original Forsyte, the one with Damian Lewis).

Flakesdayout Fri 03-Apr-20 12:10:49

I cannot stand the stupid comments by Harry Hill on You've Been Framed. I just have to leave the room as soon as that man comes on in whatever he is doing.
And yes the funeral plan adverts along with equity release, life insurance for when 'we have gone' and why would anyone want to go on a cruise? should be archived.
There are so many good series that could be repeated and I do find much more interesting things are on late at night and early morning.

Cannot think of anything worse than old drama series. If I watched them the first time round I don't want to watch them again and if I didn't watch them the first time it's because they didn't appeal. I prefer to watch quiz programmes and things like Michael Portillo's railway journeys. I've made myself a rule not to watch tv for the sake of it so if there is not anything I actually want to watch I leave the television to DH and go into another room and read or do puzzles. I've got enough books on my kindle to last me for months.
