Do You Choose Style or Comfort?

I have shoes I keep, although I doubt I shall wear them again except in front of a mirror when I try a dress on. I adored the Mary Jane style and they looked so pretty with a dress.
The reason is I just don’t feel safe and balanced wearing heels out for long now I’m in my 60’s.

Have you found that your styles has/have had to change as you became older?

Comfort is good, but some events need style as well.
Never been a fan of Mary Janes, they don’t suit me and mainly wear Skechers for walks and shopping. I have pretty shoes and sandals for other social outings and do’s.In Winter I wear boots a lot.

I go for comfort these days but try to look fairly stylish too. I'm so glad that trainers are all the rage as I wear them with all sorts, even summer dresses.
I can't get on with sandals or boots, they just don't suit the shape of my feet somehow. Isn't it annoying that shoes which were so comfy in the shop can start to pinch after a long walk?

beigecardigan yes, they fool us don’t they?
Or they develop a creaking /squeaking noise.

The sandals I chose to go with “mother of the bride” outfit 10 years ago were the perfect shade of dusky pink and I thought we were going to get along fine.
Not so.
Half way through the day I swapped them to beaded fit- flops as i was practically limping. They remain in the wardrobe in a box.

Style always, but I would wear something comfortable as long as it still looked nice. X

I also can’t wear heels, but needed silver evening shoes to wear for a special occasion. I found these last year on holiday in China, and they’re like slippers!

High heels ,always.I dont own flat shoes though I do go barefoot at home most of the time .All my boots have 3 or 4 inch heels too ..and I can still run upstairs in them

Mary Jane's, boots or sandals but they have to accommodate orthotics so the choice is limited.
I can't wear anything completely flat but a small wedge heel is fine.
BladeAnnie I wondered about the foot fusion operation and whether immobility afterwards could cause more problems than it is worth.

Margsus those that silver shoes are beauts!

They're lovely! smile

I don't think comfort necessarily means lack of style. Most of my shoes now are from Tracey Neuls. They are eye-waveringly expensive but I've bought them cheaper either in their sale or from eBay and they're the most comfortable and gorgeous things ever. Then of course on a day to day basis, especially in current situation it's just a matter of Skechers Go-Walks - dull and uninspiring but as comfy as slippers!

I very bravely and heartbreakingly bagged up about 30 pairs of high heels and took them to the Charity shop last year ! It has to be about comfort now, altho I can still strut in wedges upon occasion, I just cannot do the “teetering” these days ?

Theoddbird Sat 06-Jun-20 10:08:09

It is possible to find shoes that are stylish and comfy. I buy online from an American company...not expensive either.

cangran Sat 06-Jun-20 10:09:11

Comfort - and style! I love flat sandals and there are many pretty styles.

Tedd1 Sat 06-Jun-20 10:10:58

I have flat feet so can't wear heels. Birkenstocks and trainers in the summer. I wear a Clarks wedge heel sandal for special occasions. Hotter boots in winter and a small heel ankle boot for evenings out. I've always been envious of those who can wear heels

A replacement knee definitely influences what you wear. I have a cupboard full of lovely heels but now wear fit flops (which have some lovely styles) in summer and flat(tish) heeled boots in winter. I also love the style of sneakers/tennis shoes which is fashionable now. I do have a yearning to wear heels and wonder when the actual time was when I last wore them as well as wondering (like many other things), would I have enjoyed it more if I’d known it was the last time? I think that’s the hardest part of getting old, the sudden realisation that you no longer do something and can’t remember the last time you did? It’s like the doors shutting behind you......
My daughter is getting married next year and it just hit me the other day that I am no longer the size I was and that heels are out of the question so I won’t be that elegant ‘mother of the bride’ I always dreamed of!!

Craftycat Sat 06-Jun-20 10:14:28

You can have both. I have high heels for special occasions & Lower heels or toe post slip-ons for normal wear.
I do love a nice high heel - nothing better for giving you confidence.

Yellowmellow Sat 06-Jun-20 10:15:19

Comfort and style for me. If you look around you can have both. For me the really high heels have gone, but for an evening out a small heel of about 2/2.5 inches. I do call these 'taxi shoes'....car to restaurant (or wherever' ) restaurant to car. For anything involving walking, comfort everytime.

Puzzler61 Sat 06-Jun-20 10:15:21

I know what you mean Tedd1
I have always envied my cousin her near-perfect feet and the gorgeous strappy, heeled shoes she wears to parties and on holidays when we’ve been together.
And she’s 5 years older than me - I tell her I’m envious - I don’t let the green eyed monster get in the way ?

As I take size 2 shoes, it's difficult to find any on the High Street even my local Pavers store stocks fewer styles than they used to. Flyflots or Skechers for walking are always comfy, haven't bought high heels since I needed some for a special occasion we attended a couple of years ago.

cassandra264 Sat 06-Jun-20 10:26:51

Sooze58, my daughter got married ten years ago, and I was persuaded to buy some very elegant four inch stilettos to go with my Mum of Bride outfit. Fortunately, the outfit I chose had a long skirt. I put up with the pain for the ceremony; then switched to a pair of (still quite smart) wedgies for the rest of the day and the evening. Oh the relief! best decision I could have made....
And I don't think anyone noticed.

I broke left leg and right foot simultaneously some years ago and my first question to the surgeon was 'post operation, will I still be able to wear my heels?'!

Although now 'old' I would hate to give heels up. Most are now 'car to bar' (love that expression) but I do feel that heels make almost any outfit look better.

I bought Hotter on recommendations from Gransnet but many have heels; I think at least 3 or even 4". One pair (liked them so much I have two colours) of wedges are really high, so Hotter are not all flat.

I have one arthritic foot and several other foot problems but will keep battling on with heels because I am a stubborn old bat and not yet ready to give in (although I appreciate comments regarding comfort and also enjoy wearing my flatties)!

Have just measured the Hotter wedges and they are just short of 4", at 3 3/4". Obviously I am not recommending high heels for every day wear as that would wreck a foot but sometimes a girl just has to wear heels....

Hetty58 Sat 06-Jun-20 10:34:13

I gave up wearing heels in my late forties. Now it's comfort all the way. It's lucky that trainers, worn with a dress, is now perfectly fine!

Davida1968 Sat 06-Jun-20 10:36:29

Comfort always! (It's my belief that uncomfortable shoes will always show on your face.)

Daffydilly Sat 06-Jun-20 10:47:53

I was always, ALWAYS a heels kinda girl. It changed about 10 years ago when I fell downstairs and badly damaged my ankle; it was a long recovery. Now I work in a busy, on my feet all day job, so comfort rules.

However, I still have most of my heels, (I had over a hundred pairs at one point) but they're saved for special occasions. I still feel great in them, just don't wear then every day.

Daisyboots Sat 06-Jun-20 10:52:21

All my life shoes have had to feel comfortable as soon as I tried them on or I wouldn't buy them. I wore 3" heels at least despite being 5'10" for many years and only owned flat boots and 1 pair of flat shoes . Now in my 70s and with cancer in my spine and pelvis it's flat comfortable shoes for me. Hotter and Skechers and Reiker anti stress are ideal. It's just as well I have plenty as I can only buy them on trips to England and I cant see that happening for a long time.
