Foolish supermarket purchase

Got my delivery today and instead of 4 bananas, I'd ordered 4 packs - (5 in each)! Grr.

Now trying to find other recipes as well as banana bread!

I realise I should compulsively check each shopping list!

I also mistakenly once ordered 22 leeks instead of 2 but the supermarket phoned me up to check, as they were huge. Two of them filled one carrier bag and they said that they thought they were going to have to put on another van, just for my order. grin

I find my mistakes, quite similar to those mentioned above,
are made because I am so darn nervous in placing the order in time..

nerves!!! slow down!

When the bananas are ripe and sweet, chop them into pieces and freeze. You can then whizz them up and no kidding, it’s just like banana ice cream but fewer calories.

I did the same thing with carrots on my first online shop - thought I had ordered a bag and got just one carrot.
Did you know you can freeze bananas? They are lovely dipped in chocolate first and if you put them on a stick, you can eat them like a freeze pop or ice lolly!
Or freeze them and use later on for more banana cake in the winter when a bit of summer sunshine will be welcome . Tescos have a recipe on their website for banana cake made with frozen bananas in their skins!

if you notice your mistake when tescos deliver you can hand back to your driver for a credit..... (I don't know about other stores)

I had to use delivered shopping a few years ago when I broke some bones in my foot & was in plaster for 6 weeks so no driving.
I hated online shopping. The delivery man was delightful
& insisted on bringing it all into the kitchen for me but I never got exactly what I had ordered. It made me laugh what they thought were good 'swops'. Now if I had got Gin instead of Jif I might have been converted!
Mind you I am may be odd as I actually love doing the weekly shop.

I ordered cat litter tray liners but what arrived was a pack of ladies panty liners!

A few weeks ago I ordered cooking oil but did not check the amount and a 2 litre bottle arrived. It will not need to be replaced for a very long time.

I bought a "bargain" bar of chocolate but it was so thin no wonder it was so cheap.

My supermarket will not take back any items not wanted at present so I must be extra careful. Bargain prices usually mean tiny objects.

I mistakenly ordered a HUGE sack of dog food for working dogs for my little chihuahua and yorkie.
They love it by the way! ?

Midgey that reminds me of my sandwiches my mother used to make me for my school pack lunch, mashed banana sandwiches. Yuk. I used to swap with my friend that had fish paste sandwiches.

I think some of the "substitute" stories are the best.
One of my friends ordered mushrooms but they obviously ran out because they sent her instead those chewy marshmallow-y mushroom shaped sweets.--didn't cook up very well for the omelette though.

stanlaw Tue 14-Jul-20 10:32:33

sorry pressed too soon-didn't cook up---!

Luckily I haven't made huge mistakes but my DIL received a garlic bulb instead of oranges on one of her orders. I do not get chance to check my orders as the delivery driver usually puts the bags on the doorstep and is gone. A couple of weeks ago I had two bags left which were not mine. Someone was short of yoghurts, almond milk, bread and some veg. I tried to ring but no one came back for them.

Thank you for all the ideas of what to do with excess bananas.

Early on in lockdown my daughter and I were sharing an online order. I didn’t quite understand the system and when we thought we’d amended the order, it actually saved the changes as a new order, as well as adding it to the old one. When it came we have four tubs of butter, 4 2L bottles of milk, 4 packs of bananas etc etc. The delivery man visited a couple of times after that and took great pleasure in telling me there was “only one order this time”

Bananas make a wonderful ice cream. Banana cookies are lovely and chewy. Xx

Kittye Tue 14-Jul-20 10:42:39

Re returning to delivery driver . I don’t think you’re allowed to do that at the moment?

GrandmasueUK Tue 14-Jul-20 10:44:06

Thank you for all the ideas on what to do with the bananas. I'm onto the banana bread later, made with ground almonds, instead of flour. I've done it before and it was delicious. I'm going to freeze some as well. Looking forward to banana 'ice cream'!

Nicolaed Tue 14-Jul-20 10:44:39

Thank your lucky stars, you could have had them substituted and got a box of bandanas! I've had some weird substitutions, chicken for scampi, tinned peas for tinned pears and a white loaf for white bread mix. It's certainly been entertaining and a lucky dip when deliveries arrive!

You can also dry sliced bananas, on a very low temperature in the oven,if you don’t have a dehydrator. They’ll last for ages, can be eaten as they are as a snack, or rehydrated for cooking

A couple of weeks before lockdown a friend did her 1st on line shop, she wanted a pack of 12 loo rolls, but ordered 12 , so got 144 !!! A lucky mistake as it turned out as we all knew where to go if we needed any ??

KnittyNannie Tue 14-Jul-20 11:17:47

I’ve done that before - more than once. Let the bananas ripen a bit, then peel and freeze. You can make banana bread whenever you want to - or in our case chocolate and banana cake.

When lockdown first started, I ordered 12 bananas for our family of four to last for a week - only to be told that I could only order three bananas. I was then told that I could order three bags of six bananas if that was better. It was!!

Lexisgranny Tue 14-Jul-20 11:20:50

I have a similar problem with bananas, but it’s quite exciting each week to see whether I have ordered 4 or 4 kilograms! I find avocados a challenge. I either have to limit myself to one per week or a pack of four where When eating one per day, 2 are edible, one only half edible and the fourth straight in the bin. Unfortunately my husband doesn’t like them.

Elderflower2 Tue 14-Jul-20 11:20:57

Bananas Foster yum.

nipsmum Tue 14-Jul-20 11:27:31

I did that too with bananas. Banana loaves freeze well .I've a good recipe using oats which is also gluten free.. Found it on the internet. Just type in easy banana bread recipe.

Purplepoppies Tue 14-Jul-20 11:32:42

You can refuse stuff at the door, especially if you've made a mistake like that.
I'm not sure what I'd do with all those bananas ??‍♀️.
If you had a dehumidifier you could make banana chips?
