Mine was young girl by union gap, I remember going off excited to good old woolies with my pocket money

Oh, we'll show our age now!

Diana by Paul Anka
It could have been 2s 6d, a week's pocket money.

My first single was Band of Gold by Freda Payne

My Mother thought I was mad as we had juke boxes in all the bars of our pub and couldn’t understand why I wanted to start my own record collection.

I love so many of your first singles! Band of gold is one that I know verbatim. Ride a white Swan is up there too. My first single was Black Night by Deep Purple. Such a wee rocker!

Rock Around the Clock. When DDs eventually broke it (oh those fragile 78s!) I replaced it with a Comets LP which is now on the memory card in the car.

I didn't have a record player, but I remember my brother buying 'Telstar' and playing it endlessly.

Mine was Diana by Paul Anka as well. The second was Hound Dog by Elvis. My older brother bought Tonight Josephine by Johnny Ray and Singing The Blues by Tommy Steele. They were all 78s and are long gone but the memories are still vivid. My two friends would come to my house on a Friday evening when my parents went out for a couple of hours, they would bring their records and we would dance to the record player non-stop. Sadly both my friends have now passed away so I can’t share the memories with them any more, they were such special friends and we had such good times together.

Chirpy chirpy cheep cheep by Middle of the Road. You never hear it on the radio, though there is a good reason for that.........?

Black is Black by Los Bravos. I think it was 5s /11d

Puzzler we saw Brian Wilson at the Glastonbury Extravaganza about 3 years ago. He played the keyboards, but had to be helped onto stage.

My mother and father were always buying the lastest music but the first one I bought was It might as well rain until September by Carol King.

callgirl1 Thu 16-Jul-20 18:06:59

Woolworths copy version of Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini, I think the singer was called Paul Rich. Still have it in a cupboard upstairs. I didn`t even have a record player, took it to my friend`s house to play it.
When I did get a record player, aged 19, my first single I bought was Cliff Richard singing When the Girl in Your Arms is the Girl in Your Heart.

Juno56 Thu 16-Jul-20 18:17:47

Without you by Nilsson. Still gives me goosebumps when I hear it.Great song.

Grammaretto Thu 16-Jul-20 18:46:46

Wooden Heart by Elvis. I listened to my DSis records but I really loved that song. I must have been about 13. It's very sentimental and has a verse in German. So sophisticated..
Muss i' denn, muss i' denn
zum Staedtele hinaus,
Staedtele hinaus
Und du mein Schatz, bleibst hier?
