I have just put the opened tin of dog food in the microwave in the belief I was heating up my mug of tea. There were actual flames inside.

Years ago, I worked in the local health board offices. We had no canteen, as it was actually a nurse's home on the top floors.

All we had was vending machine and a microwave. The head of finance's secretary put an uncooked egg, still in it's shell in the microwave to cook.
The rest is history, as nearly was the secretary.

Oh and of course a new heatbag! hmm

Once when going to my mums, there was an odd smell.

It came from the microwave!

Looking inside it was all brown burnt discolored and stunk!

Mentioned it to my mum and she had no idea what it was as she had been out etc.

But few weeks later mum wanted the Heatbag( the ones filled with beads or something) anyway couldnt find it and dad said nothing!

Apparently he had put the heat bag in the microwave for goodness knows how long and it had set on fire!!

It was not spoke about again hmm but I got mum a new microwave

Ladymuck. And anyway it wasn’t food, it was a cup of tea. You can be a bit too fussy you know. We’re pretty laid back in my house and don’t worry about minor little things like where the tin of dog food should be placed before opening it, very silly.

So you opened a can of dog food while making a cup of tea? I always attended to pet food on a separate counter to human food.

Ladymuck. I have opened tins of dog food and cat food on work surfaces for over 30 years and I’m still here. I can honestly say that I have never put a can in the microwave.

Why? What harm do you think a tin of pet food will do?

Oh goodness ladymuck crime of the century anyway she didn’t say it was on the same counter but even if it was the food and the drink are both inside receptacles not on the counter holding hands
I once blew up the microwave with a jacket potato really really scary a Big Bang and blue flashes and flames a quick switch off and I stopped shaking

Elegran I was not one of the three replies who did not pick up the thread correctly. I was well aware why the microwave went on fire- it was a mistake thinking the dog food was Alexa's mug of coffee.

I have a combi-microwave - did away with a normal oven to save room. When I am using the convector programme I can and do use metal containers. When I am using the microwave programme need to ensure nothing metal goes in there.
I use this to make bread, bake cakes, patry and buns, as well as things like shepherds pie etc.

felice Thu 06-Aug-20 14:00:36

SIL installed a new combi-oven here, it has metallic stands for the micro-wave, special metal seemingly.
Unfortunately, as it was metal I left it in when using the oven and the plastic feet melted onto the bottom.
It took days to scrape off, and smelt a bit funny for a while.

I remember reading about a man who put a Christmas pudding into a microwave for a long time, misreading the instructions.
That caught fire too.

I did put a plate with a silver rim into the microwave once and it started arcing but I turned it off immediately.

Elegran Thu 06-Aug-20 12:47:07

That's OK, Lucca. Peace and love grin !

Lucca Thu 06-Aug-20 12:43:34

Elegran

Alexa and I have exchanged posts about it, Lucca. My earlier post was mainly aimed at the three replies which blamed the fire on the microwave, not on the mistake with the tin.

Apologies ☹️
To be honest for some reason I’m having a week of being very irritable.

Furret Thu 06-Aug-20 12:38:16

Oops!

Squiffy Thu 06-Aug-20 12:36:18

Sorry if my post caused confusion. confused

I was really alluding to how frightening it can be when a microwave catches fire/explodes rather than the cause!

You put a TIN in the microwave? Even an open tin will cause arcing and flames. You are very lucky it wasn't worse. Those who are blaming the microwave haven't read the instruction books for theirs.

I think Alexa said she mistook it for her cup of tea. I am pretty she knows about tins in microwaves

Elegran Thu 06-Aug-20 12:11:29

We all do, Alexa!

My comment was aimed at those whose instant assumption was that it was a fault in the microwave.

Microwaves don't like metal containers - my cousin bought several new microwaves for her MiL, who had a habit of using an ordinary saucepan in them, before the old lady progressed to other odd behaviour and went into care.

Charleygirl5 Thu 06-Aug-20 12:03:49

Alexa at least a new one will not be costing you hundreds of pounds.

Alexa Thu 06-Aug-20 11:50:56

Elegran, even I have lapses of attention.

Thanks! I did wonder if I had killed the microwave .

Charleygirl5 Thu 06-Aug-20 10:59:39

Alexa for your own safety I would get rid of that microwave asap.
