Rather pay than give in

Personally I would rather UK left EU without a deal than give up our freedom. We can avoid buying French food and wine, on the wholecwe drink new world wines anyway.
British cheeses are just as good.

As for travel, we all managed before freedom of movement and can easily go back.

The thought of caving into europe and their desire to annexe uk fills me with horror

Alegrias2 I don’t agree.

Try looking at the country of origin of each of your supermarket buys. Not just where it was manufactured, but also the ingredients of the food and the raw materials of the hardware and the clothes. If you pile up the ones from the UK on one side and the ones from the EU (or the countries with which we shared a trade agreement with the EU) you will find most under EU and a tiny heap on the UK side.

Also note how many say CE. That means they have passed the stringent standards set by the EU for safety - including toys, children's clothes, ingredients and additives, and the safety of the workers who made them. These were agreed by ALL the EU countries including the UK. They were not "imposed" from outside.

?Elliane humeur/ humour/ humor ( am trying to be inclusive here) is the best medicine at times.

What exactly is it that you are going to pay Parky? I don’t really understand your thread title.

Lucca Wed 09-Dec-20 11:07:26

It all just seems a bit jingoistic and meaningless to me. Blue passports? Why ? Freedom? From what? Straight bananas? It’s just sound bites, but then Boris loves those. What is sovereignty in practical terms.

M0nica Wed 09-Dec-20 11:14:52

Perhaps Parky is Dominic Cummings in disguise.

Alegrias2 I don’t agree.

Any particular reason? Or just alternative facts?

paddyanne Wed 09-Dec-20 11:15:20

Is EllianeGabriella in disguise there a certain Mrs Bucket style about her posts?

25Avalon Wed 09-Dec-20 11:39:59

Alegrias2 I am a bit busy at the moment and don’t have time for protracted arguments that usually get nowhere. Take a look at Hungary and Poland for example both causing problems for the EU. Doing our own trade deals the Scotch Whisky Association happy if they get a deal with US etc. Time will tell. At the moment the most worrying concern with getting goods in is this shipping and container problem caused globally by the pandemic.

Ellianne Wed 09-Dec-20 12:25:08

You've lost me! Am I Lady Gabriella Windsor, Gabriella as in Little Mernaid, or Gabrielle (Coco) Chanel?
By the way, it's Mrs. Bouquet anyway.

Alegrias2 Wed 09-Dec-20 12:26:10

OK, I'll just be quick then 25Avalon. Hungary and Poland are great examples of the Strong Man governments that I was talking about in my post, causing trouble for their own ends. We already have a trade deal that includes Scotch whisky, I'll not get into the details about the tariffs that already exist. I have no idea what relevance the container comment has.

Marydoll Wed 09-Dec-20 12:33:19

Ellianne, I suspect Paddyanne is referring to a former poster, Gabriella, who was banned. I do miss her forthright, although sometime, unfortunately offensive posts
Bucket is indeed correct.

Not guilty. I rather like the sound of that Gabriella though, apart from the offensive bit.
Thank you Marydoll, I've spent the last half hour puzzling that! Hope I'm not heading the same way! I thought she meant Hyacinth.

Anyway, the OP put the bizarre opening comment under "Chat", not "Politics", so as has been pointed out before it draws contributions from all sorts of folk.

Marydoll Wed 09-Dec-20 12:52:20

Ellianne, I really liked Gabriella, but she did upset some posters by her views.
She could be brutally honest, to say the least.

I loved her.

And yes, she was honest. But never cruel or rude.

kittylester Wed 09-Dec-20 13:00:31

I think that the poster did mean Hyacinth Bucket!!

And, there is absolutely no bar on where posters can start threads nor is there any bar on people posting on a thread be it under Politics, Chat or what ever. 'All sorts of people' can post on all sorts of threads. That was a very condescending comment.

Gabriella certainly brought some colour to the threads.

Nannytopsy Wed 09-Dec-20 13:04:10

Alegrias2 could you tell us which countries we have these wonderful agreements agreed with? Certainly not the US.

Nannytopsy Wed 09-Dec-20 13:07:42

Sorry Avalon not Alegrias!

Ellianne Wed 09-Dec-20 13:32:43

Ok let's rehash kittylester, "it draws all sorts of comments from folk" .... serious, lighthearted, funny, questioning, knowledgeable etc.
No one would expect to be jokey on a bereavement thread for example or unsympathetic on a health thread.

25Avalon Wed 09-Dec-20 13:34:56

Alegrias2 the container problem is very serious. Apparently when trade started again round the world there were empty shipping containers in the wrong place so to speak. The cost of shipping a full container has increased dramatically so they all want to ship full containers but no one wants to take the empty ones back. Goods are waiting to be shipped from China but no containers. Companies in this country, particularly the building trade cannot get many supplies, and the increased costs where they can will be passed on to the consumer. Obviously this will resolve when there are only empty containers but could take several months.

25Avalon Wed 09-Dec-20 13:40:24

Nannytopsy it’s on the www.govt.uk website. Lots of trade deals and MRAs with Australia and New Zealand.

Alegrias2 Wed 09-Dec-20 13:44:28

Unsafe link 25Avalon. Don't follow it people.

25Avalon Wed 09-Dec-20 13:46:43

You can double or treble check elsewhere.

paddyanne Wed 09-Dec-20 13:49:08

I liked Gabriella too ,it was the food post that rung a bell .Shame I'd have liked to see her back
