Following on from the enjoyable thread about rubbish books,

Was wondering what really hyped up films you have seen and thought , what was so great about that.
Mine are
The Favourite
Groundhog Day
Lost in Translation
Cannot think of any more at the moment but I’m sure there are quite a few more.

La La land for me too. It sent me to sleep on a long-haul flight.

Mr Popper's Penguins. I took GSs to it. Puerile rubbish, but they liked it,

I agree about LaLa Land couldn't get into that at all.

I have slept through several Harry Potter's and all Nights at the Museum.

I wasn't that engaged with 'Judy'.

Loved the first Sex and the City hated the second.

Just tried the new Glen Close - Hillbilly something - could'nt get past the first ten minutes.

Agree Titanic was dreadful and Close Encounters of the 3rd kind boring. Hated them both.

However I liked Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit, especially the first films, I am a fan of the books and the Mama Mia films were fun :-)

We just tried watching Anger Management while there was naff all on TV. Absolute tripe. American so-called comedy at its most inane.

Any Bond film or Austin Powers. The Maltese Falcon with Sweaty Sinbey Greenfeet and Bumphrey Go-Kart.

Does anyone remember The Cook, The thief, His Wife and her Lover? I recall that being pretty dire too.

Jules 59,Snowball forgot about those two they are definitely on my list.
Easybee I didn’t realise there was a remake of Ben Hur.

Agree with so many of the posts. I went to see Nicholas Cage in a film called Mandy. It was the worst film I have ever seen in my life. A biker gang kills his girlfriend and he takes his revenge. That makes it sound reasonable! It was the biggest load of tosh, filmed badly and in an assortment of odd colours and angles. Afterwards it’s the first time I’ve been to the cinema where all the audience spontaneously started speaking to each other about what an awful experience we had just been through. There should have been trauma councillors there!

Edward Scissorhands- ridiculous!

Jules59 Thu 18-Mar-21 21:33:51

No country for old men .... ugh!

Can't bear anything with Jack Black, Nicole Kidman, irrespective of the subject. They are both atrocious actors and I can't differentiate between them and the role.

Bluecat

Tinf1 I do watch some of my favourite films lots of times. I have lost count of the number of times I have seen Some Like It Hot, my all-time favourite film. I have also seen Withnail And I and The Big Lebowski several times.

The Philadelphia Story and Bringing Up Baby are films that I can watch repeatedly. Cary Grant was in both of them and he was lovely.

I can’t stop myself watching Pretty Woman whenever it’s in TV. Escapism, gorgeous clothes etc etc

I can’t stand anything with Nicholas Cage and Jim Carey in it.

Totally agree. Irrationally Jim Carey’s face irritates me.

And the remake of ‘Far from the madding crowd’ why? Or the remake of Great Expectations.. In fact I can’t really think of any ‘remake’ which is as good as the original..

eazybee Thu 18-Mar-21 18:11:25

The remake of Ben Hur.
Why?

In the early 1920s my grandfather watched the film, 'Rose of the Bonnie Briar Bush'. I believe a young Hitchcock was involved

He was so disappointed with the film's representation of a book he had so much enjoyed that he said he never wanted to see any film again after that, his first..... and he didn't

I/m not too sure that he succumbed to many more books, either

I normally love any film that Mike Leigh makes but Happy go Lucky with Sally Hawkins just made me cringe. DH enjoyed it so I couldn’t even get up and walk out. She played such an annoying character and I’m sure she’s very talented but it put me right off her!

PEARL HARBOUR. ALL THE LORD OF THE RINGS,TITANIC BUT I LOVED A NIGHT TO REMEMBER WITH KENNETH MORE.DANCES WITH WOLVES AND ALOT OF WHAT HAS ALREADY BEEN MENTIONED

DanniRae Thu 18-Mar-21 16:47:24

Up - Makes everyone cry except me
Mumma Mia films - As has already bee said ... a ridiculous storyline
Slumdog Millionaire - not for me
Dirty Dancing - the couple look like father and daughter
It's a Wonderful Life - I love James Stewart but not in this dreary film

I am sure I will think of some more!

icanhandthemback Thu 18-Mar-21 16:36:29

La La Land was one of those that I couldn't understand the hype about. Most Jim Carey Films but I did love The Truman Show but that was probably because it wasn't the normal Jim Carey vehicle.
I've never been able to get into X-men except the last one. I loved The Matrix 1 but the others just bored me. I have always been surprised the Dirty Dancing and Flashdance cult status. As a general rule I avoid horror films too.

tinaf1 Thu 18-Mar-21 16:25:43

Re Bluecats post on Slumdog Millionaire, I remember someone at work recommending the film Terms of Endearment to me as a comedy film !
I watched it all the way through and I did enjoy it ( and I suppose you could say jack Nicholson was amusing in it) but no way would I have classed it as a comedy.
I very rarely watch a film more than once do many posters watch films they have enjoyed lots of times?

Tickledpink Thu 18-Mar-21 16:10:56

Mamma Mia! Pierce Brosnan can’t sing. Meryl Streep can’t sing. Famous actors are cast too often in inappropriate roles, it spoils the film.

tinaf1 Thu 18-Mar-21 15:31:41

Maggiemaybe white or brown bread ?

I really enjoyed all the Harry Potter books & films it was nice to have a chat with my adult kids and grandkids something we had in common, but agree Bluecat I find Queinton Taranto films just gratuitous violence .
