No more Countdown for me.

I’ve watched Countdown since it started and always enjoyed the different presenters and the interactions between dictionary corner etc.
Not any more. I’ve watched it this week to give Anne Robinson a chance but OMG it’s dreadful. She can’t open her mouth, looks down constantly to read her notes, her speech is staccato and halting and there is no rapport with either the guests or co-presenters. Indeed she seems to be taking the p* out of some of the contestants.
I also think it’s a mistake to have 3 female presenters, there was an added dynamic with Nick and the ladies, not saying it was sexual but the ladies responded with a lighter air than with Anne.
All in all I’m really disappointed.
What do you think? Love to hear your view.

She looks like a waxwork. It’s a no from me.

crazyH Fri 02-Jul-21 18:50:30

No more Countdown for me, either. Anne Robinson looks awful, speaks awful and has absolutely no charisma ……

I haven’t watched it for years, but I feel obliged to now just to see AR in action.

There are some great suggestions on here for a new host - I’d vote for Liza Tarbuck, Paul O’Grady, Gyles Brandreth in that order.

Or how about Richard Osman or Rck Edwards?

Perhaps they’re all too busy.

Oh yes Giles Brandreth, what a good suggestion. An educated gentleman, what a perfect replacement for Nick.

Definitely or someond similar.

someone!

Anne Robinson was on Lorraine a few days ago. She implied she wasn't happy with how the first few episodes went, but that it (she?) got better?

crazyH Fri 02-Jul-21 19:16:36

Oh yes - Gyles Brandreth please !

FannyCornforth Fri 02-Jul-21 19:21:37

Dead Ringers on Radio 4 have just absolutely nailed her. It was brutal.
Yet brilliant! smile
It's repeated tomorrow at 12.30

sodapop Fri 02-Jul-21 19:30:25

That's exactly right vegansrock she does look like a waxwork.smile

Another vote here for Gyles Brandreth.

I switched it on to watch but could only stand a few minutes of AR’s attempt to talk and as it was so odd it wound me up.

Any of three above would have been much better.

annodomini Fri 02-Jul-21 21:08:47

She also persists in referring to herself and her co-hosts as 'girls'. Really? It makes me squirm!

nadateturbe Sat 03-Jul-21 13:51:49

Thanks FannyCornforth.

I’ve only seen AR on repeats of Weakest Link, which must have been recorded a long time ago. I hardly recognised her in Coundown yesterday, and her speech was different (she has acquired a lisp from somewhere - maybe from cosmetic surgery?). I hope she doesn’t last more than one series and I agree that Giles B would be excellent as the next host.

Just joined gransnet, and feeling my way around at the moment. I agree with all the posts about countdown. I have watched it for years. I took a while to get used to Nick Hewer but got used to him eventually. Can't see that happening with AR.

shysal Sat 03-Jul-21 16:53:48

I watched AR on it once last week but never again! She is so abrupt with not a shred of interest in the contestants.
I agree with the suggestion of Gyles Brandreth, but would also like to see Susan Calman who is a good presenter and doesn't feel the need to be funny all the time.

Bellanonna Sat 03-Jul-21 17:46:12

Grantym, welcome to Gransnet. Hope to see you posting often.

ninathenana Sat 03-Jul-21 17:47:24

Gyles Brandreth NO!
he is too fond of the sound of his own voice and rather smug

BlueBelle Sat 03-Jul-21 17:51:44

I agree ninathenana I don’t take to GB at all think he’s very up his own what’sit I’ve never heard of Susan Calman but there must be some up and coming presenters that would be much nicer than this old gal and cheaper I would think

nanna8 Sun 04-Jul-21 00:39:25

Send her over here to do the Weakest Link. They have tried to put it on with the most unsuitable silliest person imaginable in her place. No one watches it because of it.

JaneJudge Mon 05-Jul-21 14:51:37

I know this isn't very nice and I'll accept full responsibility, but what on earth is she wearing today? It looks like someone has placed a napkin over her so she can eat her dinner without making a mess and she has completely forgotten she had it on

JaneJudge Mon 05-Jul-21 14:57:24

I've even been sad enough to take a photo of my television for you all confused

Lin52 Mon 05-Jul-21 15:04:51

Susan Calman is fab, watching her series around seaside towns, she is a tonic, funny empathic, thoughtful and can laugh at herself. Also watched her travels around the Uk in her campervan named after her favourite actress, Helen Mirren, a hoot. Well that’s how she comes across to me.
Whatever AR looks like, I find other women deriding her not so funny.

FannyCornforth Mon 05-Jul-21 15:08:22

Jane you are hilarious! ?

nadateturbe Mon 05-Jul-21 17:12:25

I think its okay to comment on clothes. Even my husband (who notices little about clothes) said, What in earth is she wearing. It looks like part of it is missing.

Ashcombe Mon 05-Jul-21 17:23:19

Another vote here for Colin Murray who can engage meaningfully with the contestants and has a genuine love of words, besides being quick with numbers, too. He is delightfully warm and entertaining, in complete contrast to AR!!
