Things you think can make you look older than your years!

While having a discussion with two friends this subject came up! They were saying the way some people dress can look a bit matronly! I was saying but it’s not all about dress sense I think having a positive attitude and a smile makes you appear happier so therefore younger, it’s not always about how a person dresses! What do you gransnetters think!

I thought I’d better team the zebra stripes with a rather subdued, plainish top. I did end up wearing a rain jacket decorated with bumble bees though, as it started to rain as I left the house.

Tomorrow I have to dress appropriately for a Toddler Group Jubilee party, so some of my Bet Lynch/Pat Butcher earring collection might be just the ticket. grin

I have stopped wearing black close to my face as I think it can make you look drained. On the rare occasion I do wear a black top I usually also wear a bright scarf

I tend to wear shirts/blouses these days rather than t shirts as they don't cling to ever lump and bump - and I have quite a few of those. I wear them with leggings, cropped trousers (narrow) or slim leg trousers.

I do like the way Prue Leith dresses with all the bright colours and chunky jewellery.

Hyacinth Bucket on the other hand, she always looked older than her years even when the series came out in 1990. Patricia Routledge (who played her) must have only been in her early 50's when the series started. My MIL still dresses like this and has done for the last 30 years.

Just browsing through the posts and saw this one. Patricia Routledge was 60+ when the series started. Born February 1929.

Thanks Grandma70s - I stand corrected.

However, you rarely see women in their early 60's looking like Hyacinth these days. Well, not where I live.

Another pet hate is skirts above the knee with bare legs. Our knees don't age very well generally.

I like the colour of her coat but there it ends!

She’s very posh in real life!

Here is a lovely photo of some legendary ladies of the cobbles:

Loved them!

Maggiemaybe Thu 26-May-22 13:11:14

Wow! I don’t recall ever seeing Mrs Sharples smile before. grin

Isn't it strange how Ena & pals don't look quite as ancient as I originally thought? grin

FannyCornforth Thu 26-May-22 13:13:48

I absolutely love it. ?
It should be the GN logo!

I've just Googled to see how old the actresses were when Coronation Street started in 1960 shock

Minnie 64
Ena 61
Martha 46!!

Germanshepherdsmum Thu 26-May-22 13:30:40

Blimey! Years younger than me!

FarNorth Thu 26-May-22 13:33:36

I guess hairnets are one of those things that do age you, tho. smile

Riverwalk Thu 26-May-22 13:37:33

I'm 6 years older than Ena Sharples! grin

Riverwalk Thu 26-May-22 13:38:43

Gawd, and 3 years older than Minnie! shock

FarNorth Thu 26-May-22 13:39:31

Looking at an older lady on TV, I often try to imagine how she'd look with a nice perm such as used to be usual.
It's an interesting experiment.

The whole thing might change making nice perms fashionable for young women, and the sleek bobs and spiky tops just passé.

grin How apt! And pinnies too!
I’d love to have a Coronation Street fancy dress party

Speaking as a GN nipper, I’m older than Martha!

Look away now!!

I need the white trainers, though, don't I, to complete the look.

White trainers are the summer must have so the papers say.

Callistemon21 Thu 26-May-22 16:55:25

They'll just make my feet look bigger!

Once, years ago ofcourse, a colleague said “oh H your teeth are so white!” - they actually are not, but I always use red lipstick - it always made the teeth look whiter

Dresses that are too young or short for our age make you look pathetic, beaded or sequined especially. Pale colours that make you fatter than you are. Especially Beige in all its shades in any form Dress, cardigan, fleece, coat.
Not wearing any makeup a subtle touch takes years off you.
The "Village/town perm" provided by the local mobile hairdresser. Hair coloured too dark or that peculiar shade of Ginger you see.
Unkempt hands and nails that are too long or with things stuck on them.
Tatoos they may look good [though personally I don't think that} on young people but on older I think they just make people look as if they are grasping for youth.
False tans and heels that people can't walk in. Out-of-date glasses.
Telling or showing people how good you are going to look at an occasion or trying to outdo the main person i.e The bride or someone's big birthday.
Beauty and age are in the eye of the beholder not the mirror at home.
As said many times on this a lovely open smile works wonders.
wink

Agree, Yammy, with all of the above. But I didn’t think perms were even done nowadays! My hairdresser says she hasn’t done a perm since the 1980’s.

You should live in my village Aussiegran there is what is known by many with a smile as a JJ the initials of the hairdresser, they all look like clones.
Maybe Oz is different my cousin in Oz has a beautiful subtly coloured bob, didn't overdress for her son's wedding in Melbourne a few months ago and looked stunning. She personally dressed down not to outdo the bride she told me and wore kitten-heeled shoes so she could walk. I think I had her in mind when I posted. Her clothes were a subtle shade of green a dress with a toning jacket.
As Sago told me on another stream "You reap what you sow", Perhaps in this case "You reap what you thought you saw" not what others perceive of you.grin

Long skirts / midi dresses with flat shoes / white trainers is a trendy look

Which only looks good on the young and slim. I can't wait for this to go out of fashion.
