Why it is NOT a good idea to rush off to a Scottish island to "get away from the crowds"

Everyone else is trying to do it too. In yesterday's sunshine, the lemmings made for popular destinations.

Cumbrae ferry suspended due to 'extreme passenger' numbers The wait for vehicles to board the boat for the sailing to Cumbrae had earlier reached three hours.

Loch Morlich, the location of Britain's highest beach near Aviemore, was busy.

Rows of cars were parked on verges near Loch Muick in Aberdeenshire. The car park at Loch Muick was "overflowing" and driving conditions were "hazardous".

Scottish Natural Heritage said the car park at Muir of Dinnet in Aberdeenshire had quickly reached full capacity on Friday.

The Cairngorm National Park Authority has asked people to consider alternative locations to enjoy the mountain area if sites are crowded.

Grammaretto

Also the map is foreshortened above Inverness.
Cartographer's graphics are responsible so Scotland appears as a head on the top of England. Shetland appears in a box somewhere off Aberdeen.
Scotland is a third of the area of the entire UK.

But at least you don't get everywhere in the world compared constantly to the size of your country:

"This cattle station is the size of Wales"
"The lake is one and a half time the size of Wales"
"A country only half the size of Wales"

???????

Thank you.

A couple who rent out a holiday cottage have told how 34 men from Manchester turned up when only seven were expected.
They pitched tents on the lawns, lit fires and hauled furniture out of the house.
Sheri and Martin Murphy had been tipped off that the drive of the secluded property at the head of Loch Etive in Argyll and Bute was packed with 12 cars, despite only being booked for seven people.
The couple, of Kinlochleven, arrived to find the garden had 10 tents on the lawn and scorch marks where fires had been lit.
Police were called when the people staying returned to the house and refused to leave. Mrs Murphy posted pictures on social media.
The current lockdown rules in Scotland mean that a maximum of 15 people from five different households can meet outdoors. Yesterday Mr Murphy said: “I took the names and addresses of the seven men for the track and trace system, and most of them come from Manchester where they have the virus.”
Police Scotland said: “Officers spoke to those involved and the group were dispersed.

Callistemon Mon 03-Aug-20 15:39:49

Where were they dispersed to, I wonder?

MawB Mon 03-Aug-20 16:22:18

Esspee

*MawB*. You have certainly thrown a red herring into Elegran’s thread.

You were the one responsible for suggesting that it had been implied that the English were responsible for Scotland’s packed beauty spots.
Elegrans* post said nothing of the sort.
paddyanne did mention England having a higher rate of Covid19 but did not suggest that the English were responsible for packing out our beautiful countryside. She was simply suggesting that we all keep to our own areas so as not to spread the virus.
Maw I think you should apologise to Elegran for sidetracking her very reasonable post and Callistemon you should too as you added fuel to the fire by accepting MawB’s erroneous diversion without checking what had actually been written.

Dream on Esspee
I dinnae need to justify myself to you or anybody else and Elegran knows me well enough.
If you read my post properly you will see that it followed Paddyanne’s comment that
9 deaths in Scotland for the whole of July...none for over 2 weeks
Over 2000 deaths in England in the same time. Please keep to your own area until it is safe
(Note, no other geographical area or country referred to)
I asked
it can’t all be laid at the door of the English can it?
So put your wee notebook and thread polis handcuffs away, Esspee and chill.

lemongrove Mon 03-Aug-20 16:32:47

Esspee....you will be handing out detentions next.?

lemongrove Mon 03-Aug-20 16:37:05

I will stay well away from Scotland ( and Cornwall) for a good long time, having a staycation in our own garden, but of course if everyone did this, think how awful it would be for hotels, b&b’s cafes and shops etc.

Esspee Mon 03-Aug-20 16:38:59

Callistemon. Your post at 11:09:43 was simply shit stirring as the original post doesn’t suggest where the hoards crowding Scotland’s beauty spots were from. I suggest you read the post again.

Callistemon Mon 03-Aug-20 16:48:37

Perhaps I'll repeat it because it is true.

TerriBull Mon 03-Aug-20 17:12:38

A lot of us know there is an undercurrent on GN that pops up from time to time, triggered by a minority to stir up antipathy towards those of of us south of the border. Maybe some aren't aware of that because in certain posts the inference is subliminal. Sometimes it can be far more overt, like when a negative news story is highlighted with a "heaven's look what's happening down south" the inference being you're all bad and we're really nice people and it's disingenuous to pretend that some ridiculous point scoring isn't simmering away.

I don't think MawB or anyone else has anything to apologise for.

Elegran Mon 03-Aug-20 17:13:39

Peace, ladies. The original post was mine, but I'm not getting my knickers in a twist over how people interpret what I said.

Many posters have added their two-penn'orth to the soup since the start. The consensus is that -

1) Many people are fed up with not getting a change of scenery and desperate to go somewhere different

2) People shouldn't crowd to the popular beauty spots, destroy the beauty with litter and human filth and turn them into infection hotspots.

3) If people stay away, they won't bring their money with them to spend and businesses could fail.

4) You can please everyone some of the time, or you can please some people all the time, but it is impossible to please everyone all the time.

Callistemon Mon 03-Aug-20 17:20:40

Thank you Terribull.

I wasn't referring to Elegran's original post at all, merely responding to a subsequent post by someone whose constant anti-England rhetoric on so many threads can become wearying.

I'm sure Elegran knows that.

Callistemon Mon 03-Aug-20 17:26:24

X post

A friend visited a popular Welsh holiday town to visit relatives last week and was horrified to see the crowds who were not self- distancing.

They could be Welsh, English, Scots, Irish for all I know.

But if they ignore the rules and lose all common sense we could be in for another big spike.

SueDonim Mon 03-Aug-20 17:52:59

I am assuming 34 Scotch men at a holiday cottage by Loch Etive would be ok. hmm

Today there have been 27 new cases in Aberdeen, linked to a bar. I wonder if they’re all from Manchester too.

varian Mon 03-Aug-20 18:11:23

Oh dear SueDomin! -surely you should know that there are no Scotch men. Men might be Scottish. Scotch is only a description of food or drink - beef or whisky!

SueDonim Mon 03-Aug-20 18:16:37

wink Varian

SueDonim Mon 03-Aug-20 18:17:54

PS there’s also mist! grin

paddyanne Mon 03-Aug-20 18:44:25

of course not but the FACT is they were from a Virus hotspot and that aIS a cause for concern .Now I know you believe Scotland is a region of England but even if taht was true then there would still be casue for concern when people from an area where the virus has caused a new lockdown are travelling to a DIFFERENT AREA .As I have previously posted I have English family including my SIL and GD ....much rather they stayed put than come here until the virus is under control .BUT if you want to call me anti ENGLISH ...go ahead .

SueDonim Mon 03-Aug-20 19:09:39

You don’t know what I believe, Paddyanne. angry I await an apology for that, though I won’t hold my breath...

lemongrove Mon 03-Aug-20 19:51:37

Nobody believes Scotland is a region of England ( although the Donald may do) and your constantly defensive statements about Scotland and all that happens within are very tedious at times Paddy as if you are waving an SNP flag every time you type something.

lemongrove Mon 03-Aug-20 19:53:42

As for the use of ‘Scotch’ ( men or anything else) it used to be the correct word used, but changed at some point ( mid 20th century)? A history buff will know.

Elegran Mon 03-Aug-20 19:59:44

Lemongrove From his attitude to Nicola Sturgeon's devolved decisions, I suspect Boris Johnson may believe that Scotland is a region of England.

Jane10 Mon 03-Aug-20 20:19:05

I heard that the 27 men found staying at the Airbnb in Glen Etive were from Manchester. They'd booked for 8. Luckily nieghbours alerted the owner that 10 tents had been set up in the garden. They were all praying on the beach when police arrived. A sword and an axe were noted on the premises. No matter where they came from they couldn't expect a welcome.

SueDonim Mon 03-Aug-20 20:31:23

I was being ironic re Scotch. I’d forgotten irony doesn’t come over well on t’internet.

Praying on the beach, Jane10? Was it a weird religious group? The owner shouldn’t have accepted a booking from England for any number, if they didn’t want to risk bringing Covid into the area.
