UK officials have compiled ‘Covid exit strategy’ from April – report

Officials have been working on a “Covid exit strategy” called Operation Rampdown, under which the government could wind down testing and people would no longer be forced to isolate if they are ill from April, leaked documents reveal.

The documents, prepared by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), give ministers the option of dismantling the official government-backed testing system and tracing operations.

The requirement for people to isolate for 10 days if they contract Covid could also be scrapped and those on low pay would no longer receive £500 to isolate.

Do your family in Germany do their community bit Lincslass?

Lincslass Mon 15-Nov-21 18:30:32

Typical, if not free people won’t do their community bit. Always the same in the UK. Family in Germany already paying for theirs, 15 €.

It seems a bit premature to me to be formulating an exit policy. Pandemics can last up to ten years, but I hope this one won’t do that. As soon as people have to pay for their own tests, they won’t test. And the idea that after a positive PCR a person doesn’t need to isolate seems madness.

Lateral Flow Tests will no longer be free to obtain in England after New Year.

I can't find a link definitely saying that.
I heard it from our local NHS Scotland Chief Executive on a webinar.
He was saying the implications for Scotland aren't yet known.
Fwiw, he's seemed to be a good guy not a stuffed shirt.

"I am."

I'm not sure how much planning you need to say all covid measures are stopping.

Lucca Mon 15-Nov-21 11:44:00

Exactly my point

Alegrias1 Mon 15-Nov-21 11:42:53

Why can't I spell because?

Alegrias1 Mon 15-Nov-21 11:36:40

Oh I know I'm a pedant, but...

Lateral Flow Tests will no longer be free to obtain in England after New Year.

is not the same as "consideration is being given to ending the provision of free LFTs some time after April."

Becuase if people believe the first one, they might be concerned and they might stop asking for test kits because they think they have to pay for them.

Lucca Mon 15-Nov-21 11:29:46

Sort of….

Al I know nothing of Professor Spiegelhalter but I love him already for his name alone (and does it actually mean ‘speech stopper’?)

Alegrias1 Mon 15-Nov-21 10:45:43

This is a bit off topic but you gotta love Prof Spiegelhalter.

Basically, don't believe everything you read.

There are always, or should be, strategies and contingency plans in place which do not necessarily mean they are actioned.

They can be tweaked, shelved or carried out according to circumstances.

The general grumble has been that successive Governments have undertaken less forward planning over the years than many previous governments so perhaps that is why some are bemused by this.

I do hope that you are right GG

GrannyGravy13 Mon 15-Nov-21 10:05:47

I am pleased that the Government is thinking ahead and has an exit strategy in place.

When it is executed will be decided on the scientific data no doubt, along with the situation worldwide.

rosie1959 Mon 15-Nov-21 09:57:28

Suppose they can't win wrong to plan for it wrong not to
At some point this will have to be done

Whitewavemark2 Mon 15-Nov-21 09:55:23

I understand that best case scenario covid will be under control by 2022/3 but that is a very optimistic scenario.

More likely it will be 2024/5

And worse case 2026
