Watching the proms

Yes, what a quaint turn of phrase!

Bumping this up as it made me laugh and cross in equal measure.

But being a gran of very little brain I took it seriously and was about to comment that last week I read a book and wore lipstick to add more beauty to my look!
I just love the idea of someone "adding more beauty to their look" in whatever circumstances!

Duh!! I get it (maybe?)
1) why shouldn't we grannies enjoy the Proms as much as anybody else?
2) that's not what she was talking about was it?

Why would you go to a prom if you were a grandparent ?

Perhaps you'd like to share what you heard, which orchestra was playing, who was conducting Blakefriend? This thread is entitled "Culture" after all

Last month went to a prom which was really amazing and wore a silk dress which added more beauty to my look.

I saw the brilliant German violinist playing the Dvorjak on Friday night - just wonderful!

The proms are always a joy - concerts in our living rooms - wonderful! We are so lucky to have this - an annual treat.

I find some of the background information interesting, and enjoy the proms extra programme.

Stansgran - I wonder if they'll always associate that particular piece of music with such a thrilling sight?

We listened to the Mussorgsky while waiting for our badger to appear and we got mum and two cubs. A special evening as the DGC are packing to go tomorrow and it's the first time they've ever seen a badger. Obviously the proms helped.

I've really enjoyed this too, hildajenniJ - and I loved the Liszt. These inane presenters are a complete waste of space and an irritation. If you want background information it is readily available on the Proms website.

I'm really enjoying the China Phil. I love Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition, I was enthralled. I don't like presenters, chit chat, I would rather they just made the announcements and let the music speak for itself.

I missed that one Flick but despite regretting it it seems the inanity if the presenters would have spoilt it anyway. As for tonight, when the Chinese modern piece came on even HymnsElf gave up and the cricket went on instead. Probably not quite as bad..

On the other hand I saw a prom concert on TV last week with the Zurich Symphony Orchestra under David Zimman playing a truly magical and moving Beethoven 'Pastoral' Symphony and a really witty and clever Swiss themed encore that completely made, not just my day, but my week.

The concert didn't get away scot free, there were two BBC presenters and the female presenter came close to ruining it for me. Her face was blank and expressionless (botox?) except for a rictus smile and she kept interrupting the male presenter when he was speaking saying totally inane things like 'Oh, yes' and similar supportive but pointless comments. I do not want eye-candy women with feather minds presenting the proms, I want the women we have had in previous years, mobile faces, intelligent and able to make a useful contribution to discussion about the orchestra, conductor and the piece to be performed - oh, and attractive to.
