Strange sandwiches

I've just seen my German friend eat sliced apple on brown bread. When I said I'd never seen that before, she asked how it was different from banana on a sandwich.

My aunt used to give us Cadbury's flake and banana in a sandwich, and I've heard of ( but never tried) Scotch pie in a roll, and condensed milk in a sandwich. I have a friend who maintains there is no food which cannot be put in a sandwich, Pot Noodle being a favourite.

What are your strange sandwich fillings?

How do you eat a shepherds pie sandwich ???
One bite and the contents would be everywhere. That's if you could pick it up without it disintergrating

What interesting combinations - not sure about the chocolate cream ones though - seems a waste of chocolate grin I love tuna and grape sandwiches with mayonnaise, my husband used to eat sausage roll sandwiches when he was much younger and often has cheese, salad cream and crisps. I've often eaten apple, cheese and a crusty roll lathered in butter but wouldn't have thought of putting it in a sandwich so will have to try that one. The first thing I really fancied to eat after being ill last week was fish fingers - comfort food and often eat banana ones. My mum also used to have to have a piece of plain bread and butter with tinned fruit and jelly for tea.

Years ago there was a pub near here which at the weekly Domino Drives used to serve tinned spaghetti sandwiches. As the publican provided the 'food refreshments' I expect it was the cost which was paramount. One tin must have been sufficient for half a loaf of bread !

I'm a Marmite baby and I like nothing better than Marmite and lettuce - thanks for your alternatives, Coolgrsn65 - like the sound of both yours. I remember sugar sandwiches, my mum loved those bars of chopped dates in brown bread (haven't seen the chopped dates since my teens - has anyone seen them since? A weekly dessert at school was 2 water biscuits, an apple, a spoonful of grated cheese and one of strawberry jam. We ate the apples separately, but made a cheese and jam sandwich with the biscuits, which was surprisingly delicious, but still don't like water biscuits!

Does anyone remember tinned Russian Salad? That was very tasty on ham in white bread.

DGS birthday party here yesterday, DD was 'ill', and SIL in a very bad mood, so i ended up doing it all myself(another very long moan to come). I put the sandwich fillings out with help from 2 wonderful Dads.
One 6 year old girl had Tuna with orange butter icing(still on the table from the cake decorating) and cheese. She loved it, a very large very dark skinned Dad was turning green.

Petalmoore. I too love Heinz sandwich spread, even though a friend once described it as "sick on bread"

I'm looking forward now to the end of Sugar Free February so that I can get some thick cut marmalade and try it in a sandwich with cheddar cheese!

I like really buttery mashed potato sandwiches too. Crunchy peanut butter and honey, yummy.
Grated Apple, cream cheese and date.
I'm hungry too now and I've just cleaned my teeth!

We always had wet salad with our Sunday dinner (just lettuce, spring onions and tomatoes with mint and vinegar). I still dish it up as a nod to Durham tradition and I'm happy that the family aren't over keen as I love to pack the leftovers into a big soggy sandwich for tea.

Mashed spud baked bean & gravy sarnies on white buttered bread ?
Toast with cheese spread instead of butter and jam on top.
Always loved a crisp butty.
Still love a chip butty, preferably on fresh buttered granary bread with ketchup (any wonder my cholesterol is through the roof? ???)
Dgd like fish finger sarnies.
If you enjoy it.... eat it!!!

I love cheddar and home-made marmalade sandwiches - a fairly thin slice of vey mature cheddar is my favourite. However, it's all a bit theoretical now, since I discovered last year that I have put myself on a rigorous low-carb diet to stave off the need for medication. It's proved a great success, but this 'sandwich' can now only be simply a slice of cheddar.

I often make a low carb 'bread', known as 'Oopsie bread', which looks like a drop scone or Scotch pancake, and is made with eggs, cream cheese, psyllium husk and baking powder with a pinch of salt, and I add the cheese to that with some Marmite - only the bread is unusual here ...

One of my favourite sandwich fillings, which is just as good on an Oopsie, is Heinz sandwich spread. My great aunts used to give it to me in little white bread sandwiches cut into triangles when I used to stay with the in the 50s - it was a special treat on Sunday evenings, and I was allowed to have them in bed!, I imagine that they welcomed the chance of an evening off entertaining their young niece, and I have loved sandwich spread ever since. My French mother hated it, and thought it was vulgar, which made me love it even more. But I know very few people who like it, except for my two younger sisters, and in the Waitrose we sometimes go to in Edinburgh, it is hidden away behind a pillar alongside pilchards in tomato sauce, Plumrose tinned ham, and Shippam's fish paste, in what I call the 'old lady aisle'. Even the assistants have to ask where it is. Odd ow things change. Do I have any Are there any fellow Heinz sandwich spread aficionados on Gransnet?

When I used to go on diet I always craved Peanut butter & Golden syrup on toast

icanhandthemback Sun 12-Feb-17 17:42:54

I like lemon curd and cream cheese, they are absolutely lovely. We used to eat tomato and sugar sandwiches before the sugar police took over.

Nelliemaggs Sun 12-Feb-17 17:00:56

Sage, onion and pork stuffing on my own home made bread sandwiches are my post Christmas breakfast treat.
