Hello all, usual good wishes.

For 2 weeks running Morrison's have not had any Maris Piper potatoesshock!

I'm a tad miffed, as imo they are the best for roast potatoes, knock King Edwards into a cocked hat!

Is it only here, or have others noticed?

Plenty of Maris Pipers in Tesco, Asda and Lidl down here - I buy them for chips.
We also bought a 25kg bag of Wilja potatoes for £8 from a local farm. My OH spreads them out to make sure they are completely dry and then put them into hessian bags or paper sacks. They keep fine in the cool shed, and get covered with a blanket in case of frosts.

I have just had a moan about the Waitrose 'any size will do' potatoes from Waitose so I hope our order of Maris Piper potatoes from Tesco arrive this week.

King Edwards are lovely for crunchy roast potatoes but Maris Piper are good and don't go in the water.

I buy potato and onion bags from Dunelm
I have a potato bag but it has never stopped them sprouting so I've started keeping them in the fridge.
A very large paper sackful from the farm used to keep well in the garage when the family was still at home.

I buy a big sack MayBee as it works out so much cheaper than small bags.

Sorry Phoenix, yes, it’s obviously easier if you have a garage to keep them in.

Plenty of Maris Piper at the local Lidl last Monday, Phoenix.

Plenty of them in my Morrisons and also Sainsbury's (Cornwall)

I thought you weren’t supposed to keep potatoes in the fridge? Something to do with the cold changing them in some way and making them unsuitable fir people who are diabetic (or pre diabetic).

At Lidl this morning, there were stacks of Maris Piper, probably because they were on offer. 79p for 2.5kg. I bought a bag and thought of you, Phoenix.

Thanks Springy, that's a great help!grin

BTW, I disagree that King Edwards make the best roasties (sorry, can't remember who posted that) Maris Piper do!

I’m going shopping with daughter in law today, and the greengrocer near her has Golden Wonder and Cyprus potatoes, both excellent chippers and roasters. Are they mostly a Scottish thing?

I buy 4kg at farm shop for about £2.50, reds but not sure what sort, apart from being a really good chip/mash spud, they’re always big, I hate peeling the small ones too.

All potatoes will sprout and go soft if you keep them in a warm place, no problem with keeping them in the fridge as long as it’s not below freezing.
I can’t think why chilling would affect diabetics, potatoes that get warm have higher sugar levels, you would have to eat a large quantity to make a difference, diabetics usually have a regulated diet

Following my comment yesterday - plenty in Morrisons here today.

Potatoes shouldn’t sprout if the are kept cool and dark! If you have space buying a sack of potatoes is a great economy!

They're on offer in lidl at the moment ?
