Trimming thyme

Not sure what to do with mine - it has flowered (both the pink and the white) and the bees just loved it.

I have googled whether to trim it; but all the pics are of a straggly variety. Mine are very low and flat like a cushion and are growing on the top of a low wall.

Shall I give them a haircut?

Can do, it wont harm it.
Mine dies back in the winter and I cut it back to a few inches then.

Mine are less than a few inches high to start with! The cushion is no more than 2 inches high.

Leave it alonegrin
Just cut some if you want to use it in cooking.

Apparently it is called Creeping Thyme.

I have some in the rockery, I just leave it, just split it every other year or so when it takes over, I have another plant that’s better for cooking.

Ah - I will resist the trimming! I do not grow it for its culinary properties, but for the smell, the bees and the looks - I have a double brick wall about 2.5. feet high round the patio and is has earth in the top and lots of plants in there.

It’s lovely isn’t it, the bees go mad for it. I have so many herbs in my garden, my DH calls me his witch grin.

I just trim mine with the garden shears, take off all the dead bits, same with the oregano when that takes over.

I leave it alone too, but it has thuggy tendencies. I have some that has completely taken over an alpine sink, and some that is making a take over bid for the rockery wall. It’s not something I use for cooking much, but one is a lemon thyme and that is quite nice. They will receive my concerted attentions at the end of the summer, but in the meantime, as has been said, the bees love it!

I pull any scraggly bits off, it always comes back really well and is wonderful smell of you throw a handful into the bbq.
