In the spring, I was worried that I'd allowed my hydrangeas to become too parched in last year's long, dry summer. When I dead-headed them in March, they seemed very sad and were slow to form new flower buds - and the ones that did form were very small and scrawny.
I fed them some general fertiliser and hoped I hadn't actually killed them and fretted a bit because I really love them. I need not have worried. Two days ago, I returned from holiday to a fabulous display which I just had to share.
I love all the pictures of hydrangeas here. I have a rescued one, that has black stems, and it is just beginning to flower. As it was in the TLC corner, it didn’t have a label, so I was wondering if anyone could identify it, not that it matters, I love it anyway. Picture complete with weeds and nigella seed heads!
Here is one of my Paniculatas. I remember we bought them at the same time, lemongrove, but mine is Sundae Fraise, a smaller version. I like the way the flowers turn pink as they mature. I am also happy with my pink Annabelle, although I haven't given it enough space so that it is jumbled with other stuff. The Runaway Bride which was the Chelsea plant of 2018 is disappointing. It is supposed to flower at each leaf joint and tip. So far the tips have no buds.
