How do you get your gkids to tell you about their school day

Mostly, when asked this, the response is "can't remember", "nothing" "boring" or another comment which gives you nowhere to go with the conversation.
Please offer some suggestions that you have found useful, as I really do want to know how school is going, but "how was school today" just doesn't do it - range of ages from 6 to 10 girls and boys (if that makes any difference).
Looking forward to your help.

Children vary in how much they want to talk about school. DD2 said more in two weeks than DD1 had said in two years. It was interesting to notice this but it didn't bother me—I just put it down to a difference in personality.

Oh I don't think i'v ever asked about school. I sometimes ask about their friends as in "who's your best friend at school?" It's probably because I remember asking my own children before I realised that they kept the two parts of their lives completely separate. I had my grandchildren today and asked them " how was your football school?" I'd paid £60 for a three day session for the two oldest. They did show me their medals but weren't really forthcoming. ( their mum told me they'd loved it) I just think when they are with me they completely close off the rest of their life and just live for the day with me. Wouldn't it be lovely if we maintained this ability through out our lives I for one would be a lot happier.

Thanks for so many replies and ideas - at least it seems to be a common issue - I will have some new strategies now ready for when they go back.
The good thing is they usually have plenty to say about other topics, especially gd(in spades) - so it seems that school is not the most important thing to them - and jolly right too - life when you are young is to be enjoyed.

I suppose many grown ups have the same attitude to work - don't really want to talk about it when 5 o'clock comes.

Anyway, they are a joy and the best thing since sliced bread - oh, I mean, organic sourdough.
