I take uva ursi and the homeopathic remedy cantharis to keep things 'ok' down there. Cranberry juice can have too much sugar which also makes things worse. Don't neglect your condition. Thank you. I haven’t heard of uva ursi but will look it up. I was told that d-mannose had to be recommended by a consultant so since March 2022 have been taking it as a preventative measure in a glass of unsweetened cranberry juice. Until this last episode I have been free of infections. I am finishing the antibiotics today so tomorrow I am going back on it. These uti ‘s are a real problem and taking antibiotics is something that is necessary but have their own problems.

Thank you welbeck. They think she has pneumonia too so she is being given intravenous antibiotics and a lot to attention. I just wanted to say that the ambulance service was fairly quick and the hospital staff were amazing in A&E. It was very heartening.

Do make sure the surgery send sample off to the lab as you need to receive the correct antibiotic for the infection- I was on a course initially that wasn’t sensitive to my nfection so the uti returned.

Oh I get that symptom of wanting to go to the toilet and cannot. I had better see someone, I have a prolapse so maybe to do with that?! Helpful advice, thank you all

And amazingly after posting on here this morning, the home rang for an ambulance for Mum as they suspected sepsis caused by a UTI. So here I am at her bedside with everything crossed.

I was in hospital with a kidney stone issue and sepsis - lucky to be alive - had a stent put in whilst there ( kidney to bladder). Came out with a UTI and a prescription for anti-biopics… this was mid Covid. It rarely went away and I was on anti-biotics almost permanently til the stent was eventually taken out some 20 months later( hospital delays , ) ….I was just phoning up for pills and popping into give samples at the surgery Ona regular basis…SO pleased to be better now! Keeping trying to drink litres of water a day is actually quite hard!

The NHS doesn't seem capable of testing for UTI's like it used to so unless you've got money for private testing, you're stuck with what you get. My mother has been suffering with chronic UTI's for years and eventually it was determined that she had diverticula pockets in the bladder which meant bacteria grew from them and none of the recommended remedies helped. Now she is catheterised and she gets less frequent UTI's. It amazes me that it took decades for her to have the tests that showed the problem.

Pharmacists in Scotland are not able to prescribe antibiotics for a suspected UTI in men, those under 16 or women who may be pregnant, are breastfeeding, suffer from recurrent UTIs or are over the age of 64.

Glad to hear you are all sorted now. Amazed you put up with it for a few weeks….first slight sign and I’m on to the GP!

Just saw your reply but had already posted a message. Glad to hear it is all getting sorted. My infection was severe also and I needed two lots of antibiotics to finally clear it. You’ll have peace of mind for a nice weekend.

Phone your GP today - you have the same symptoms I’ve had twice in 3 years and both times it was a urinary track infection. My surgery insisted that I handed in a urine sample immediately and was given prescription for antibiotics before the results even came back. I was told that if ignored it can turn into sepsis. Please act on it today and phone your surgery. Also my pharmacy is able to prescribe antibiotics for this and yours might be able to help.

In an earlier post you said you felt stupid leaving it so long. Please don't. My mother is in a nursing home and even though she always has similar symptoms, somehow it seems to take an age for anybody to recognise it. UTI's often affect your brain power and reasoning too so they can be easily missed.

I get a nerve type pain sometimes in the urethrae area which can be quite uncomfortable and very sensitive, is that the sort of thing you mean?

UTIs are a real pain . I get them about once a year. My problem is I never learn a lesson. I should be drinking more water.

I'm glad you managed to get it tested and some antibiotics.
It's not good for a UTI to be neglected and the receptionist at your surgery sounds as if she needs a bit more training.
Our surgery will ask you to take in a sample asap, the nurse will test it and either tell you, or a receptionist will phone if you've gone home, and the GP will issue a prescription if necessary. The rest of the sample goes off to the lab for further testing.
