I’ve got two loaf tins but mislaid one of them ages ago. With energy prices going up I need to do lots of baking in one go in future. Listening to one of Rory Stewart’s podcasts ( I think it was the one with Alastair Campbell) he said the most correspondence he’s ever had about anything was when he said if you’ve mislaid something it’s where you think it is. So go back to the first place you looked and you’ll find it. So there was my loaf tin in the cupboard where I always keep it. Having looked for it in that cupboard several times. But not properly. Thanks Rory!

I can agree with that, especially if I have lost it in my rather large handbag.

Hmm, not so sure about that! I recently had a spate of losing things and once spent ages looking for my car and house keys. I ended up taking the spares keys as I did not want to be late but then fretted the whole time I was out. I knew they were in the house so when I got home I sat down and thought back to that morning. I remembered that I had opened a parcel in my bedroom, tried on the clothes and then tidied away the packaging. When I looked in the bin, there was the plastic bags, tissue paper, tags etc - and my keys!!

Then only a day or so later, I lost the reading glasses I use in my bedroom which are always on a tray next to the bed. I wasn’t worried though as I have several pairs but did check a couple of other rooms then gave up looking. I remembered to look in the bin after the key episode to no avail. Again, when I relaxed and retraced my steps, I found them in a bedroom drawer, put there when tidying up.

I’ve now learnt not to do as much tidying up!

I have a history of putting things in the freezer so it's usually the first place we look. Tights, keys, glasses, pens, DVDs and yesterday the salt cellar. No idea why other than I may have something in my hand when I put something else in the freezer and put the lot in.

Going back to the first place you looked does often work.

It didn't work for the laundry detergent that turned up in the fridge though, the milk jug still full of (sour) milk that turned up in the plate cupboard, or the lost key that was found six months later in a shoe.
