Am I entitled to carers allowance.

I am now caring for my mother and she is entitled to attendance allowance.
My employers in London gave me early retirement and I have moved back up north.
My occupational pension amounts to more than what most people are getting as a full salary in the area.
When I saw the Social Worker she told me to apply for Carers Allowance and it is going to be paid.
Can anybody confirm an error has not happened.
I will have extra expenses as a result of looking after my mother for example I will have to run a bigger car.
It will be another 4 years before my state pension is payable.

Quote from DirectGov website: "Please note, when looking at your income, Carers Allowance do not count Occupational or Private Pensions as earnings."

So...although Carers Allowance is income related, your particular income is ignored.

However, CA is counted as taxable income so will need to be included on your tax return.

That's right!

Hi Mishap / jeni.

Thank you for help.
I wanted to confirm that I was reading the papers right which I have been given.
Oddly I have just had somebody call offering to top up the loft insulation free.
There is some insulation in the loft but it is not up to today's standards.
I have e mailed the company explaining I am not 70 but my mother is.
I own the property jointly with my mother.
They have e mailed me back saying that if any of the occupiers are over 70 the insulation is free.
I think I have covered myself as I now have it in black and white.

Apparently free loft insulation is available for ALL homes in the UK. There are no age restrictions.

Thanks shysal

There man living opposite is about 50 and he has said he needs a bit more loft insulation.
I have just done a print off as it may be worth him looking into this.
It seems odd shops local to me still stock loft insulation.
Probably if you only had a bit to do you may just go ahead and do it yourself.
