Auditor's clients account

It appears that my solicitor has been holding some of my late DH's money in his clients account. He has just presented his bill for dealing with the estate and now wishes to deduct the money owing from the amount in the clients account.
Just wondering whether this is normal practice?
I know the bill has to be paid but surely the money should have been transferred to me so that I could decide how to pay - I may have preferred to pay by credit card for example.
Not had to deal with this before, so have no idea whether this is normal. Any light shed would be much appreciated.

Sorry, the title should have read 'Solicitor's clients account. Auto correct!

It is pretty standard practice, but if you do want to pay by credit card there's no reason why you shouldn't. Simply tell him/her that's what you will do and, once done, ask for the funds to be released.

Thank you grannyactivist, I have never had to deal with a solicitor regarding a will before and just wondered whether it was normal practice.

But I have just re-read my solicitor's terms and conditions and have found the relevant sentence in there - 'invoices will be raised regularly and monies will be transferred from the assets recovered to meet the same.'

So it seems that is what will happen. Just got to sign the invoice and drop it in, then he will send me a cheque for the balance.
