Applying for the State Pension

I only discovered recently that you have to apply for the State Pension, I suppose I thought that it just happened.

So I did, as I'm within the permitted time frame.

I was quite proud of myself that I finally got all the digital identity stuff sorted, and the application submitted.

Today I got an official invitation to apply, with a unique code. It's dated the same day as I applied, so I assume it's an automatic response.

I hadn't really expected to hear anything until nearer the date (April), and I thought the online application was The Application, so I'm a bit confused.
Also the unique code doesn't work.

There is a helpline number to ring but I think I'll leave it until Monday, rather than talking to some poor, tired, end-of-the-week soul.

I wondered if there's anyone who's done it recently who could talk me through how it works?

Thank you.

We've recently applied for DH state pension as he is due to retire in April. He didn't apply on-line until the letter arrived with the code which went through fine, it's just a case of waiting for another letter from them stating when he can expect it to start.

I wonder that as you've applied on-line before the official letter arrived containing the code then it has gone though ok, making your code void. But maybe it would be a good idea to phone them to confirm that this is the case?

I already had a government gateway id, so I just received the letter and verified using the code on it.
