I'm a very new Gransnetter....so here goes..... We are looking to relocate to the Kent area from the North of England this spring/summer....Don't know anyone in this area. Our children and grandchildren live in Kent and London. Obviously we'll be busy with them but just wondered if any GN's know these areas, are there any meet ups etc! Would be interested in any feedback, comments etc. People keeping telling me its friendlier 'up North' but I want to prove them wrong!!!! Fingers crossed.

Kent is a beautiful county where I lived for several years and found the people very friendly. If you are thinking of living in Tenterden then I envy you. It is a lovely village with a very English feel and has most of the necessary amenities. It is also handy for Maidstone, the county town. I can't comment on what activities are available in Tenterden as I have only visited, not lived there. My parents lived in Staplehurst for many years and seemed to find plenty to do in and around the village. The trains to London are good from Staplehurst, too. Cranbrook is another nice village. Rochester, on the Medway, is an interesting town with many Charles Dickens connections, a wonderful cathedral and a castle. Well worth a visit. Lucky you! Happy house hunting.

My in laws lived just outside Tenterden and it is a lovely part of the country. I agree with everything NotTooOld says about the area. Lovely places for dining but definitely not cheap. I am definitely jealous.

I’m a northerner (Liverpool) living in Kent. I’ve alway thought the notion that people are friendlier up north was nonsense. It depends on how friendly you are yourself to people is how people respond to you. So don’t worry about that. What you do have to look forward to is the weather is a tad warmer and the economy generally is better at this end. Of course I still miss my home city, I miss people talking with the same accent as me and my extended family but we’ve been very happy here. I agree anywhere between Maidstone and tenterden is really lovely. Hope your move goes well, good luck

We lived in Tenterden for 10 years and we loved it. We knew no-one when we moved there but were made very welcome by the neighbours and soon became part of the community. There are lots of small independent shops, plus a Waitrose and Tesco. There is also a vineyard which sells lovely wine. The Kent & Sussex steam railway starts at Tenterden and it is a beautiful ride through the countryside down to Bodiam, where you can walk along to the Castle (National Trust). There are many public footpaths through the countryside around the area. Ashford is a growing town with an International railway station and a wider selection of shops. I would love to have stayed in Tenterden but Ill health forced a move.

I don't live in Kent, but have visited Tenterden on a few occasions, it's a lovely town, very nice shops, picture perfect. The surrounding countryside is gorgeous. Ashford provides a very good rail link to London and the continent.

Good luck with wherever you decide to locate to.

Tenterden is a beautiful town but the public transport links are not as good as some other parts of Kent. Ashford has the fast trains to London and the Continent going through but has grown into a large town now with lots of new builds. Two completely different ways of living. Lots of other small villages around that area, real Garden of England. Hope you find something you like.

We moved to the Tenterden area in July of this year after living in the North for almost 30 years. Huge move, didn't know anyone but wonderful to be near children/grandchildren. Have found a great barre/Pilates class fabulous teacher. Do pm if you would like further info. Hope you settle in soon and if you ever fancy a coffee???

I have relations in Canterbury and they love it, so much in the city itself and fast trains to London plus proximity to the seaside.
