Menopause and acne

I don't seem to have had any symptoms of the menopause and was surprised when my doctor told me that not everybody suffers , I assumed it was something that everybody went through, so I'm grateful for that but now at 63 for the last two or three months I am suffering with what appears to be acne. I had acne when a teenager but nothing like this, my face is constantly breaking out, always looks flushed and feels sore and also feels as though every pore has broken out and its even spread to my neck. Is this any thing to do with the menopause do you think. Anybody else had this problem. Any help gratefully received.

its the changes in your hormone levels, if its really bothersome I would suggest a visit to your gp.

I don't know about the break outs, but could the flushing be rosacea? ( not sure of the spelling)

Hi Angib, I also sailed through the menopause, I guess I'm lucky, I've never knowingly had a hot flush. However, I am suffering from rosacea in the form of breakouts and red skin on my face (cheeks and forehead). You GP should be able to prescribe some ointment that helps or, if it's really bad, some antibiotics. You should get it checked anyway, don't leave it and suffer. I'm also suffering from dry eyes that could also be due to rosacea. I need prescribed eye drops 4 or 5 times a day. Look after yourself, stress makes it worse.

Thanks NanaMacGeek I've just made an appointment with my doctor. It seems as though if we don't suffer one way we get hit another way. C'est la vie!

I've got teenage spots again too. It's something they never seem to warn you about.

I was ok until i started taking HRT 6 months after my hysterectomy, then i had a terrible acne outbreak and was advised to take Evening primrose which i did and it calmed it down.

Thanks for that Grannypiper. I'll give that a try.

I sailed through the menopause too. Now at 67 I have a spotty, blotchy face. I'm not sure what that's all about confused

Sounds like it's rosacea, which is an infestation by mites on your skin, not actually acne as such, but INSECTS!

Your GP can prescribe an insecticide gel and it will clear up.
There's no need to suffer.

Use baby shampoo and really clean your face, eyebrows and eyelashes, as they live around the hair follicles and crawl out at night.

It shouldn't take long before your skin is back to normal if you get the insecticide gel from the GP. You smooth it on at night and it kills the mites when they come out to feed on your dead skin cells.
