Hi, I am 56 and I have nearly gone 12 months since my last period, what's next and what are the positives that I have to look forward to? Up until now I have had only very mild hot sweats so I have been lucky there.

My sister had no symptoms except she can't wear polo neck jumpers as she gets too hot.If you get symptoms ask for blood tests as I had hypothroidism for 10 years.

Apart from hot flushes, which never seem to go away completely, I didn’t have problems with menopause. One thing that I found reassuring is the number of women politicians (and other prominent women)who seem to come into their prime in their 50s when they must be going through menopause.

I suppose you hear mainly from those who have had a difficult time.
Positives are no periods! I always had plenty of energy and still have. There’s also a kind of confidence and freedom when you get older - like in the poem ‘when I get old I’m going to wear purple’

Apart from the hot flushes, which started as soon as my periods ended, I've had no other symptoms. I worked until I was nearly 62 doing a stressful night shift in charge of a medium sized nursing home. I still have hot flushes, but they are getting fewer, and milder.

It's 12 yrs since my last period. I have been very fortunate not to have had a single menopausal symptom.
After suffering with very irregular and very heavy periods since I was 12 I feel totally liberated.

Symptom free, no problems apart from occasional hot flushes early on. Pluses are no periods, what’s not to like? Enjoy.

Before the menopause at 56 I used to have very heavy periods. I did have some hot flushes but no other problems so I found the whole cessation of periods very liberating.

I'm 59 and have gone 10 months without a period (although I'd been on Progesterone tablets to try to stop the horrendous flooding). I've only been off the tablets for 6 months. I sometimes have hot flushes and occasional night sweats, but otherwise, I'm happy to not be having periods.

My periods were painful from age 13, the pain lessened once I'd had a baby but never went away. From my early 40's I had heavy, painful periods that lasted at least 7 days. The menopause meant an end to that so was liberating. I had some hot flushes but only at night. The down side of the menopause relate to sexual intimacy. but that doesn't affect everybody just as not everyone has hot flushes.

As a previous poster said, no more periods - what's not to like?!!

I had a reasonably trouble free menopause approx 10 yrs ago. I have had some return of flushes recently & have had a bloodtest to check the cause. Before menopause I always had irregular cycles of at leat 5 weeks between bleeds. Towards the end of periods the gaps got longer but often the bleeds heavier & longer. Just go to GP if you are concerned.

the bleeds can just be a blip,or polops ,fibroids, thining of skin, quite a few reasons but always check it out, this is my 4th period of menopausal bleed, last 3 times was polops ,and they can give you pain,so im hoping the same ,hospital next week ,but do get yours checked, just to put your mind at rest

I went a year and then had a period. That was my last ?

My granddaughter hadn't been born when I had my last period - she's 21 now so I must have been about 43 - never had any symptoms at all so I assume I sailed through the menopause.
