Northern Ireland - Abortion

I've always known that women from Ireland had to come to the UK for abortions, and I vaguely knew that women in NI had restricted access to abortions, but what I was totally ignorant of was that NI women had to pay for the privilege if they came to Britain for the procedure!

I'm embarrassed by my ignorance and angry on their behalf. angry

We did have a post from a NI gran who said exactly that, and that it's complicated.

It doesn't matter if it's a tradition. Abortion is legal in the UK and therefore if a UK citizen wants to/needs to take advantage of that particular operation then it should be available to her.

It used to be a tradition that a man would approach a male matchmaker to contact the parent's of a girl he wanted to marry. The matchmaker would talk to the girl's parents and if they were agreeable negotiations would begin with the groom's parents regarding the dowry. The girl didn't have much say in the matter. Once the dowry was agreed upon the couple got married. We wouldn't say that was acceptable these days and wouldn't expect a girl to be married off in that fashion even though it was a tradition. www.mayo-ireland.ie/en/towns-villages/mayo-abbey/folklore/traditional-irish-wedding.html
