in the Scottish news today is a report that the future mrs Harry is a direct descendant of ..wait for it ..ROBERT THE BRUCE...now am I being my usual cynical self by thinking this is a way to ingratiate her with the scottish public...who are notoriously not interested -couldn't care less about the royals.Or does everyone who comes into contact with royals REALLY have amazing pedigrees..or do they think we button up the back ? Gave me a good laugh anyway .

Oldwoman!! grin annie, you could well be - back to that family tree I'd say!!!!?

Oldwoman70 Wed 11-Apr-18 10:57:29

I have discovered I am descended from an ape named Urg. Around 6 - 8 millions years ago she woke up with a bad back so decided to walk upright for a while, found she preferred it and others copied her. She then managed to smuggle herself into UK and was able to claim enough benefits to raise a family grin

I am descended from Prince of Wales Owain Glyndwr - because I want to be ?

Margs Wed 11-Apr-18 10:33:19

I think most of us could very well be descended from Charles II.....he definitely got about a bit!

GanriellaG, my money's on the dog. I may have told this story before but a guide at Edinburgh Castle told us of an American visitor who was adamant that she was descended from Greyfriars Bobby. The guide didn't know how to tell her he was a dog!

I think everyone's bound to be connected to Edward III in some way. After all, he had plenty of offspring. We could start another Wars of the Roses. Might have some difficulty sorting out which side we're all meant to to be on...

Well done Grans for turning cynicism into an entertainment! ?

I read that her lineage goes way back to a distant king and that she's related to Harry in some way. Her paternal great-aunt's cousin's ex wife's uncle's dog-walker was married to a 3rd cousin once removed whose 3rd child out of wedlock was brought uo by a servant who used to bathe the king...or summat like that. confusedgrin

The population of England in the time of the Domesday Book (1086) is estimated at about 2 million.
(Not including the Celtic countries)

MaizieD Thu 05-Apr-18 22:54:33

I wasn't going back far as William the C for my crude estimate of 'thousands' counterpoint. Robert the Bruce is very early 14th Century, so only 700 years, not 1,000.

There must have been an awful lot of duplicates if you're talking of 'one trillion' in 1066ish. The population of Great Britain and Ireland can only have been a few million at that time. hmm

(P.S I think we're working on different numbers of generations per 100 years and that your '4' is probably more correct than my '3'. So 700 years would be in the millions rather than thousands)

counterpoint Thu 05-Apr-18 20:29:47

If you go back 1,000 years (which is about right for William the Conqueror) , the number of ancestors is a lot more than thousands. 1,000 years is around 40 generations. Going back 40 generations, you have one trillion ancestors. Obviously, that has to include some duplicates. It's probably the justification for saying that we're all related to everyone who was alive at the time of William the Conqueror.

I very snobby lady I once knew used to name drop a lot and talk about "old families". Surely all our families are old?

Jalima1108 Thu 05-Apr-18 19:12:42

or IV?

Grandmama Thu 05-Apr-18 19:08:02

Aren't most of us descended from Edward III?

Jalima1108 Thu 05-Apr-18 16:13:08

I've never heard of Morton's Fork - just looked it up and it's Hobson's Choice grin

Jalima1108 Thu 05-Apr-18 16:11:57

No doubt someone will soon be digging out highwaymen, horse thieves, vagabonds, murderers, sheep rustlers etc in her family tree before too long as well!

Wheniwasyourage Thu 05-Apr-18 16:03:27

NannyMargaret48, that is exactly the sort of nasty remark which has been criticised on another thread (although I am not allowed to say that, am I?) Fortunately you do not speak for all of our English friends and relations.

sarahellenwhitney Thu 05-Apr-18 15:48:44

Another string to her bow ?She wishes

Sulis Thu 05-Apr-18 15:19:10

Hmmmm, well an aged relative of my adotive parents found an ancestor - a priest, I think, who emigrated to the USA on the Mayflower. Then they found a horsethief who was hung for his crimes - and chose to stop searching!! On the 'natural' family side, a cousin claims William The Conq as an ancestor - and through my American connection I got back to 1591, Germany, and a farmer called Nikel Drumm! All very interesting, but frankly who cares, what does it all mean, actually? What is more important is what kind of people are we today?

pauline42 Thu 05-Apr-18 13:35:32

Yes - guess you are being "your usual cynical self" - your quote not mine! Let it go.......

Blinko Thu 05-Apr-18 13:24:01

Wonder if Andrew Morton is connected to Morton's Fork...lol!

silverlining48 Thu 05-Apr-18 12:22:23

If a journalist decides to dig up Meghan markles lineage that’s hardly her fault, it’s a pity there is a constant need for new ‘news’ As hAs been said if we were all to look back far enough there will be some connection with someone now forgotten but mildly important at the time.
