The Russian Report

The ISC report on Russian interference is out today. It doesn't point the finger of blame at individuals, I didn't realistically think that it would (though that might be in the unpublished Annexe). But in a way it is worse, it points the finger at the last few years of tory government and the Intelligence services.

This is the summary given to the media:

Basically the report says that we know that there is Russian interference. There was no investigation of Russian interference in the EU referendum because the government chose not to pursue it.

When you look at the amount of Russian money being laundered through City financial institutions, oligarchical investment in property, football clubs, newspapers etc. and the huge amounts of Russian money being donated to the tory party you begin to understand why tory governments weren't too keen on deeper investigation...

I was resigned to leaving the EU by what I thought was a democratic vote.
Now I am furious that the Russians may have influenced the vote to go the way they wanted.

Some of us have been saying that for a long time.

AGAA4 Tue 21-Jul-20 16:17:11

There was no proof and may never be.

growstuff Tue 21-Jul-20 16:23:36

No, because the government turned a blind eye. Too many with power had a vested interest in not seeing.

Guy Verhofstadt

Brexit was always a gift to Putin because it weakened the European Union & left Britain divided, isolated. The #RussiaReport shows just how many questions remain unanswered.

Project fear- they said- conspiracy theories. One more to become nothing but. Democracy is dead.

If the Tories refuse to investigate the allegations properly- then all the opposition parties need to ally to do it themselves- crowd funding to do the job. I'd be very happy to contribute.

biba70 Tue 21-Jul-20 17:07:21

Would anyone else be happy to put their hand in their pocket?
And encourage their opposition MPs and parties to join up to get this done?

biba70 Tue 21-Jul-20 17:58:36

There are of course 175 parts of the report which have been redacted out and replaced with 3 *
and a whole annex document that has not been released.

These of course contain the parts which are truly and totally damaging to this Government and that they do NOT want us to see. I do hope Dominic Grieve will finally drop his honest allegeance to the Conservatives and explain to the public what is in these numerous redactions and the annexed document. His allegeance should now be to the electorate, not to Johnson.

The Tory party is a threat to U.K. security

?
No, that would be Corbyn and friends, they were great pals with Russians.

GrannyGravy13 Tue 21-Jul-20 18:36:12

Corbyn and Co couldn’t bring themselves to condemn the Russians for the Salisbury poisonings.

Tell me, what did Mays government do after Salisbury?

Today, from the Washington Post:

“Brexit Party leader Nigel Farage said the report exonerated him and his movement to leave the European Union. “Years of lies and smears from Remain politicians and much of our media. There is no evidence of Russian involvement with Leave EU or me in the referendum,” he wrote on Facebook. “It was all a hoax — apologies are now required.”

Guy Verhofstadt, the chief Brexit negotiator for the European Parliament, tweeted that Brexit had been “a gift” to Russian President Vladimir Putin. But he offered only the relatively toothless observation that “the Russia Report shows just how many questions remain unanswered.”

This must come as a huge disappointment to Remainers/anti Boris brigade/conspiracy theorists.

The report was a bit of a dull thud for expectations.

The security and intelligence committee wouldn’t agree with Farage.

Ask him about The £8million donation by his buddy.

Grasping at straws?

Grandad1943 Tue 21-Jul-20 19:20:55

Russian monetary donations to the Tory party is at the bottom of this scandal. The foregoing political donation income has made a political party with little more than one hundred thousand members the wealthiest political organisation in the United kingdom by a substantial volume.

Only the labour party generates the vast majority of its income from within its own membership, but that is often condemned on this forum by those who abhor trade unions and the affiliation of their membership to the Parliamentary Labour party.

So its make your mind up time for some on this forum in regards to which do they want, private donation by the wealthy organisations and persons, or funding from within by a six million strong UK wide Labour movement.

The above has to be the two alternatives as funding of political parties by taxation will never come about in Britain.

biba70 Tue 21-Jul-20 19:34:00

A bit dull - because all the important bits were redacted out, perhaps?

Turning a blind eye to Russian interference and taking their money at the same time- adds to treason - nothing less.

That has to be one of the most idiotic, fingers in the ears posts I've seen on here for a while, lemon.

Do tell me how much money Russians have donated to the Labour Party. And about all the times that Corbyn went partying with Russian oligarchs...

Russian links with the tory party are legion. Russian links with the Labour party? You tell me...

paddyanne Tue 21-Jul-20 21:24:56

We knew that ther had been interference in the Scottish referendum in 2014 ,now we know that not only the UK government was involved bit Russia too .....democracy at its best in this DIS united kingdom .Saor Alba

varian Tue 21-Jul-20 21:35:02

Russia has interfered in our democracy as part of its plan to destabilise the West but fortunately Russian attempts to break up the UK in 2014 were unsuccessful.. Unfortunately they were successful in helping to rig the fraudulent referendum of 2016. .

Whitewavemark2 Wed 22-Jul-20 07:42:03

So there can be in no doubt this morning that our security is in real danger from the Tory party.

It is now clear that the pigs were far more interested in the depth of their trough than biting the hand that is feeding them.

Traitors the lot if them.

Those you describe as traitors will be governing this country in all likelihood for the next four years Whitewavemark2.

Perhaps had more so-called Labour supporters had got behind a Labour leader who was elected to that position with the largest vote and majority ever gained by someone standing for that office things may have been very different in regards to Britain's democracy today.

Some of those who criticise democracy in the Tory party should look at their actions and attitudes in regard to the Labour Party.

lemongrove Wed 22-Jul-20 09:03:59

Oh MaizieD ......the innocence and naivety of your post regarding Corbyn and Russia!
How many times was he on the Russian tv channel....?
They viewed him as a useful idiot, an old Marxist who may help them if he got into number ten.
Remember him in Parliament at the time of the Salisbury poisonings? The only one who was visibly uncomfortable and saying that we should allow the Russians to have the material to test?Ye Gods!

Ridiculous bit of thinking here.
It didn’t affect the Scottish outcome but somehow it did affect the outcome of leaving the EU!
It didn’t affect either outcome in actuality, but Russian interference would have been in almost everything here in the UK just as it is in some other countries, it’s a direct link to them having a leader who was a KGB operative.
They would have certainly tried to do their best to interfere in the last GE to help Corbyn into power..but as we see, they weren’t successful in that either.

MaizieD Wed 22-Jul-20 09:12:05

Now answer the questions about Russian donations and hospitality, lemon.

The Russians didn't need Corbyn. The Russian Report has made it clear (as if we didn't already know) that the Russians have owned the tories for years and years. Defend that.

Grandad1943 Wed 22-Jul-20 09:22:04

lemongrove, in regard to your post @09:10 today, Putin and the Russian regime wished for the Conservative Party to win the last general election.

Through that Russia has gained an isolated Britain and a weakened European Union. What more could they have possibly wished for?

lemongrove Wed 22-Jul-20 09:36:00

I don’t need to defend it MaizieD ....it’s untrue.
Of course the Russians wanted Corbyn to win, it would have been wonderful for them to have a weak ditherer at the helm who has openly said he would never push the nuclear button and would always take Russia’s word for everything.
The wealthy Russians living here and making donations are the ones who are afraid of Putin.
