They've had my vote in the past, but while they're determined to throw women under the bus ( along with Labour and the Greens) they can go whistle! I've never felt so homeless with my vote before sad, it comes to something when the Conservatives are dong more than the rest!

I am sure that many members of the Labour Party, the Liberal Democrats and the Green Party disagree with the policy of gender self identification and it is quite likely that the parties will revisit the subject and put forward more nuanced policies.

In the meantime there are so many other important political decisions to be made if we want to see a better society in the future.

Ilovecheese Sat 26-Sep-20 11:39:19

I see they will campaign for a Universal Basic Income. That is a very interesting idea. I hope they don't get bogged down in the gender identity issues, that would drown out everything else. I am a Labour party supporter but am considering a change, if the LibDems become more leftwing than Labour I might well consider voting for them. Where I live has swung between the Libdems and Labour in the previous few elections.

janipat Sat 26-Sep-20 15:05:55

Where are the voices disagreeing with gender self identification? Is the vile treatment of JK Rowling and others for voicing any disquiet a factor? Non of the parties will get my vote while its implementation is their avowed intent, don't trust "quite likely". Once it's law it's very difficult to row back from.
I agree there are other important political decisions, but disregarding the negative impact on 51% of the population is pretty huge in my book. We all have to decide where our priorities lie and making previously female only spaces unavailable to women of various faiths, those who have suffered trauma etc aside from the impact on women's sports and even crime statistics as already happens is against mine. I accept for others these issues are lower down their priority list.

varian Sat 26-Sep-20 15:36:41

I think that there is a need for a wide ranging non party political discussion on this topic janipat. I do not accept that self identification will have a negative impact on 51% of the population, but I do think there are legitimate issues, for instance in the area of competitive sport.

You might find it interesting to listen to this being discussed on this week's "Any Questions" and "Any Answers" on Radio 4.

I have been a member of the Liberal, now Lib Dems since 1962 and I have never felt more alienated by them since I joined and I will probably not renew my membership next year. I chose not to vote in the recent leadership election because I thought both candidates were a dead loss and I couldn't think of a single person in the party who would be anything else.

Nothing to with their transgender interests, just the way they constantly put make more of this and other issues that affect small groups at the expense of solid thought through and mainstream policies like housing, education, health that affect the majority.

Do not get me wrong, I am not against any of the minority causes they support, but it seems that all other everyday issues have disappeared. What are they saying on COVID and the total chaos of the current government? No idea, What have they to say at the utter chaos in the university sector at present? No idea. What about the damage being done to the health of people, who have health problems, but not COVID, No idea.

Its not what they say at conference that matters, it is what they are doing in Parliament and the way they are totally out of touch with their grassroot members.

I have stuck to this party through thick and thin for nearly 60 years. They were the only party I could bring myself to vote for, but now even they have forgotten what the philosphy of Liberalism is. I am still a liberal, I have no idea what the Lib Dems are.

varian Sat 26-Sep-20 19:33:03

I am sorry you feel like that M0nica

This cannot possibly be the time for you to give up on liberalism, You ask what the party has to say about covid.- here it is-

The SNP in Westminster have been pushing for UBI for months and had no support from any other party...now the Lib Dems have decided to make it their Idea ...shame on them for not supporting it when there was a great need for it .Lots of folk who needed help didn't get it in the Sunak Financial package .UBI could have solved that with a bit of co operation from both Labour and Lib dems .

varian Sat 26-Sep-20 19:38:25

Why do you not welcome this move by the LibDems Paddy?

Surely the only way we can have better future is for parties to work together on policies they agree on?

Mamardoit Sat 26-Sep-20 20:23:34

*Lib Dems back universal basic income

LibDems and tuition fees ????? A pity they did the dirty on students. They will remember and will be voters for many years to come. Young Clegg, Cameron and Davey won't have to worry. The bank of Mum and Dad will sort it for them.

We won't forget their time 'in government'. They gave the tories power and achieved nothing.

varian Sat 26-Sep-20 20:28:02

The LibDems achieved a great deal - pupil premium is one LibDem policy which the Tories now try to claim as theirs.

Anyone who has observed the difference between the coalition years and the unmitigated disaster of Tory rule since 2015 can see how much the LibDems achieved for the good of this country.

Mamardoit Sat 26-Sep-20 20:38:09

And those very same young people if they get to university will be 50-60K in debt. Interest goes on from day one and they pay compound interest at a high rate. It was at 6% not sure what the rate is now.

This is only for English students obviously.

Mamardoit Sat 26-Sep-20 20:45:17

What about the bedroom tax varian? The big one was getting rid of FPTP. How did they do on that?

paddyanne Sat 26-Sep-20 21:08:59

Sadly they didn't work WITH the party who was pushing for it Varian and now when it suits them and they cant do anything about it they'll trumpet it as THEIR idea .Another party who toe the WM line as unionists yet cant see their way to backing the ELECTED members of the SNP in any vote .NOT so unionist then ,BRIT nats ...the worst kind of nationalism .

Mamardoit Sat 26-Sep-20 21:15:59

Would you prefer English Nationalists paddyanne?

paddyanne Sun 27-Sep-20 12:46:35

They ARE English nationalists...note the new leaders remark today on Andrew Marr that he wont allow Scotland a referendum as he prefers it (Scotland) to remain a PART of England .Couldn't be any clearer could it? They had the chance along with the Scottish NATIONAL party and labour to speak out fr UBI in Westminster ...they didn't do it.Now they want everyone to think they just had this fabulous idea!!

paddyanne Sun 27-Sep-20 12:51:17

May I just point out that Scotland was a country for hundreds of years BEFORE the union .That we steeped in our OWN history ,have our own culture ,our own Church, systems of Education and Law and even though some decry it language .

We are not and bever have been A PART of England .and the new "Sir" in charge of the Lib Dumbs would do well to understand that .Scots like Varian may be happy to lose our identity but the rise in support for Independence shows that it is coming

Mamardoit Sun 27-Sep-20 13:27:37

Unionists are not English nationalists paddyanne.

I am not Scottish but I have never thought Scotland was anything but a separate country with its own history etc.. So no need to point anything out.

If Scotland vote for independence that's up to them. England will do very nicely without Scotland. It won't just be Scotland's boarder, it will be England's to manage to its advantage. And it wouldn't be long before public sector jobs serving the whole UK relocate leaving just Scottish customers.

varian Sun 27-Sep-20 13:59:16

You are misquoting Ed Davey paddyanne. He certainly did not say the he wanted Scotland to remain part of England. He said that he wanted Scotland to remain part of the United Kingdom as it is now.

paddyanne Sun 27-Sep-20 14:26:33

look back at it he said He said he wanted IT to remain a part of England unless they broadcast different stuff up here which is highly unlikely .My OH paused it and played it back he was so incensed by it
