Chancellor Sunak's wife richer than the Queen

I felt sick when I read this morning that Sunak had not declared a third of what he should have done now he's got a top job. It's not just his "investments", it should be his whole family. There he is telling us people are going to lose their homes, and that kids can go hungry, and his family has vast wealth. What does he know. See Guardian front page. "One rule for us" etc etc.

When the thread is about the Chancellor of the Exchequer and his wife, and somebody feels the need to bring their ethnicity into it when that has no relevance to the conversation, you better believe I'm going to get "nippy".

GrannyGravy13 Sat 28-Nov-20 13:12:53

As it’s only claimed he hasn’t declared his financial interests in full , I cannot see the point of getting wound up over something that might or might not be fact.

You must try harder GG13. ?

Urmstongran

You must try harder GG13. ?

I know........anything to distract me in between ironing bedding, will be glad when the ironing service reopens ?

If you are a politician - even a local councilor, your family’s income is relevant, there are plenty of MPs with rich spouses.
Mrs Sunak is a business woman, wether her wealth is more than the Queen is irrellevant, HM has not got her own fashion brand or an entrepreneur.

As long as it is all transparent and above board that’s fine, company finances are notoriously misleading because share prices can be extremely volatile. I guess you wonts see them in the queue at the food bank.

paddyanne Sat 28-Nov-20 13:33:33

its just another tory bending rules to suit himself, why is anyone surprised ? Its the one thing they excel at ,fiddling figures to benefit themselves their families and their backers...witness the billions handed over to companies that had no history of PPE production and one in particular who has managed to buy himself a million pound pad since her fleeced the taxpayer .
Thats one of the guarantees in life .tories only think of themselves .Thats probably why we haven't voted for a majority of Tories since 1955 yes that is NINETEEN FIFTY FIVE and their huge rise in popularity from Thatchers 24% to Davidsons 22% ( media speak I do understand 22 is lower than 24) is now 16% in the polls .

lemongrove Sat 28-Nov-20 13:42:17

Davidhs you won’t see a politician from any Party in a queue at the food bank either, or, come to that most people in the UK.
Sunak’s wife’s shares ( they may be worth a staggering amount although merely owning the shares is not your cash in the bank and share prices fluctuate) but they are her own, not the property of Rishi Sunak. If there are any conflicts of interest then he will have to declare them.
Paddyann your implacable hatred of Westminster and all things ‘tory’ leads you to make evermore sweeping statements.

lemongrove Sat 28-Nov-20 13:44:14

Davidhs to clarify.....only my first sentence was in answer to your comment.

Georgesgran Sat 28-Nov-20 13:44:36

Oh dear - predictably GN’s reasonable comments have deteriorated into the usual political vitriol.
He seems a decent chap to me and perhaps Boris’s successor?
Should you want a really nasty character to criticize - can I recommend Philip Green?
Asking for £30million, when his own family took dividends of £1.2 Billion!!

GrannyGravy13 Sat 28-Nov-20 13:45:33

It’s a shame that the sainted SNP are so transparent........Oops that’s why after being ordered twice now they still haven’t released papers appertaining to Mr.Salmond??

Urmstongran Sat 28-Nov-20 13:59:59

I think paddyanne that as you married into a Scottish family you’ve become more Scottish than some of the locals!
?

MadeInYorkshire Sat 28-Nov-20 14:05:37

Wonder if she has received any failed PPE contracts? That's why it should be declared as a 'conflict of interest' as in Dominic Cummings FIL!

Calendargirl Sat 28-Nov-20 14:07:17

I get fed up with the constant griping about other people’s wealth.

Being envious serves no useful purpose, there will always be others with heaps more money than I have.

‘Twas ever thus.

Riversidegirl Sat 28-Nov-20 14:08:19

I'm afraid that many of you know nothing about government or politics. Have you not noticed how lucrative "contracts" for PPE etc have gone to best buddies and family connections of ministers and MPs? Or totally unconnected middle men? Jewellers for instance? Ministers of the Crown are legally required to declare family investments and income. When I worked in Local Government we had to declare a box of chocolates!

eazybee Sat 28-Nov-20 14:32:13

I'm afraid that many of you know nothing about government or politics.
So true.
Your name is not very familiar, but your tone certainly is.
How fortunate that you have come along to share your superior knowledge with us.

Riversidegirl Sat 28-Nov-20 14:38:08

It was not meant in that way. I'm just sick of this country being duped by people who pretend to care.

growstuff Sat 28-Nov-20 15:26:46

Why is this newsworthy now? I thought it was common knowledge that Mrs Sunak comes from a super-rich family.

Calendargirl Sat 28-Nov-20 15:32:32

I’m sure if we look back at the first and second world wars, certain politicians and associates have benefitted from government contracts for supplies, equipment, weapons.
And further back than that.

It’s always gone on.

growstuff Sat 28-Nov-20 15:36:43

If we go back in time, monarchs used to execute their enemies. It doesn't mean that it's acceptable these days.

Lucca Sat 28-Nov-20 16:13:55

Several of you getting nippy hearing the words Asian and black. Its not racist to comment on statistics and it's well known that poor white boys do worse in many schools. Some communities have a strong work ethic and value education and some don't. An Asian I know complains about the pressure her sister puts on her kids. They must do well at any cost. The family is wealthy but miss out on other things.

I just asked what the point was, that’s all. Those statistics didn’t seem particularly relevant.

MaizieD Sat 28-Nov-20 16:19:42

Isn't that why the Ministerial Code exists?

It's not just that his wife has shares. She owns at least one company and is director of several others. A possible conflict of interest exists.

And I don't know where this being snippy about Asians accusation comes from. Only one person mentioned it in a perfectly non-snippy way.

Whitewavemark2 Sat 28-Nov-20 16:35:14

The only issue here is a conflict of interests.

I have no interest in how wealthy Sunak is, but I am interested in his asset ownership.

Sunak failed to fully declare his assets in shares etc.

Nothing will be done though as this government is corrupt, and voters seem happy to have a corrupt government.

Everything is topsy -turvey.

Iam64 Sat 28-Nov-20 16:47:46

Kircubbin 2000 - so you know someone, whose sister encourages their child to achieve, at the expense of other things. This ‘proves’ something about aspirant wealthy Asians ?
It isn’t being “snippy” about the use of the words black or Asian to challenge racism in its many forms

JenniferEccles Sun 29-Nov-20 11:19:42

Ah this was in the Guardian.
Now there’s a surprise!

By the way Riversidegirl I would like to know where you read or heard that the Chancellor has said “children can die” ?

You won’t be able to of course because it’s utter nonsense and shameful that you inferred he had said that.

Sunak has been an excellent Chancellor, investing eye watering amounts into the economy to support people.

The fact that his wife is wealthy is totally irrelevant and complaining about her wealth is just another nasty example of sneering jealousy so common from some on the Left.

Sarnia Sun 29-Nov-20 11:23:32

Maybe if he asks nicely she will give him an interest free loan to help bail us out!
