Nightmare for Cornwall

As if the losses to the hospitality industry weren’t enough to cope with and lockdown has meant “staycations” if you are lucky enough to get a break at all, pity the poor residents of this corner of Cornwall.
A “ring of steel” has been thrown around Cornwall for the G7 summit, with the Royal Navy watching for threats from the air, including drones, as 11,000 police officers and 150 sniffer dogs attempt to protect world leaders.
With the three-day meeting in Carbis Bay starting tomorrow, Devon and Cornwall Police have called in wide-ranging support from the Ministry of Defence.
Naval vessels, aircraft, sniffer dogs, logistics support facilities and bomb disposal teams will all be on standby.
My neighbour (and friend’s) son has been sent down for the duration as he is in charge of the Paramedic/Ambulance services and is not looking forward to it one bit.
They’ll be ready for a holiday when it is over.

I think rates will rise pretty much everywhere. People are moving around now obviously. the government tell us it is the younger generation now being infected. But we must also remember that even though a person is vaccinated they can still catch covid and pass it on. So in reality we could all be guilty. We have to live with it like so many other diseases.

News
Covid rates in Cornwall have risen above the England average for the first time since the beginning of the pandemic.

Who organised this "ring of steel"? Was it Matt Hancock?

Atqui Sun 20-Jun-21 18:19:40

Surely with thousands of additional police being housed on a cruise ship for three G7 cases were bound to increase, especially as the younger staff weren’t vaccinated

Ashcombe Sun 20-Jun-21 13:29:30

These aren’t just totals but the number per 100,000.

Ellianne Sun 20-Jun-21 13:05:42

Maybe Ashcombe because the towns like Newquay, Falmouth, St.Ives have more than double the population of the likes of Padstow in the first place? And have far more tourist accommodation. It's the sheer quantity that spreads the virus

Ashcombe Sun 20-Jun-21 12:12:00

Although holidaymakers would be responsible for some of these new cases, it's interesting to note where the spikes in case nos. have occurred:-

Cases per one hundred thousand as of yesterday morning:
Falmouth 600
St Ives 733.2
Newquay 227.6

Other popular tourist destinations:
Padstow below 3
Bude below 3
Looe below 3
Perranporth below 3
Penzance below 3
The Lizard (all) 31.2

If it were predominantly tourism causing the increase, rather than the G7, wouldn't you expect tourist areas that hadn't been involved in the G7 to show similar numbers to those that were?

Whatever the reason for the increased number of cases, this is bad news for the tourist industry there as some businesses in the hospitality field have had to cancel bookings due to staff shortages, caused by people being ill or self isolating. Many in those posts were in the (at the time) unvaccinated age groups.

Poor Cornwall.

Ellianne Sun 20-Jun-21 10:19:22

dragonfly is correct, too many assumptions. Though I can understand MawBe's concern as certainly at the time she started the thread the G7 was getting blamed for pretty much anything and everything!

dragonfly46 Sun 20-Jun-21 10:14:58

That should have been be careful and do not make assumptions.

dragonfly46 Sun 20-Jun-21 10:13:57

I have just read this so we must be careful about making assumptions.

I read that the Public Health Consultant in Cornwall, Dr Goldstein said that this current outbreak initially started as a cluster at the Penryn Campus. Of course because it is more contagious than last year’s variants, it is more readily spread in hospitality venues, unlike last year when the influx of tourists didn’t have a great impact.

JenniferEccles Sun 20-Jun-21 09:56:16

But what is the answer?
If visitors stayed away then even more businesses in the south west would fold.
It’s been stated so many times that Cornwall is one of the poorest counties in the country, relying heavily on the tourist industry for its survival.

A rise in cases in itself is not necessarily worrying as it is younger people who generally don’t need to be hospitalised.

Ellianne Sun 20-Jun-21 09:35:50

Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly - 70 (up from 19)
Plymouth - 98 (up from 66)
Exeter - 88 (up from 33)
Mid Devon - 21 (up from 15)
East Devon - 27 (up from 12)
Torbay - 25 (up from 12)
Teignbridge - 41 (up from 14)
South Hams - 19 (up from 10)
West Devon - 13 (up from 6)
North Devon - 26 (up from 10)
Torridge - 21 (up from 3)

Ellianne Sun 20-Jun-21 09:28:00

Yes, it is alarming MawBe and the G7 should never have happened.
But the potster's comment you quote does not explain the whole picture. Cases in the entire south west have risen dramatically, especially in Exeter and surrounding areas which is a long distance from St. Ives. Even our safe corner has more than doubled, it is all over the region. These results come on the back of the half term break when the area was flooded with (unvaccinated) tourists who would have come anyway. Workers in bars and restaurants have had to be imported from up country. The spread was sadly inevitable and will continue.

MawBe

Apologies for reviving an old thread, but I was jumped on from a great height by some people for suggesting the G7 was something of a poisoned chalice for the inhabitants of Cornwall.
Now I read this from a poster living in the SW

^Cornwall is reporting a 2,000% increase in Covid cases in the G7 areas (St. Ives, Carbis Bay, etc) and this particular variant is a super spreader. Some businesses have been forced to close down as a result. A very worrying situation.^

It was obvious to anyone with an ounce of common sense, that was going to happen ?

It's not unusual to have daytime café staff who also work in different settings in the evening. If one of them has picked up an infection it can go round various establishments so it could be from anywhere. No choice but to close and reopen next week.

Alegrias1 Fri 18-Jun-21 09:30:37

The cafes were closed because some of their staff are having to self isolate and he couldn't replace them at short notice.

love0c Fri 18-Jun-21 09:30:31

He stated some staff had tested positive for covid.

love0c Fri 18-Jun-21 09:29:26

I don't know Maizie. That is what is puzzling. He said 'we have to keep people safe?'.

Saw the owner of the Porthminster cafe on the news last night. He said 3 cafes closed? Think he owns the one on Porthmeor and the one on Porthgwidden as well? How on earth as a country are we going to open up and get back to normal if every time we hear 'covid' we are going o shut up shop?

Why would it be covid restrictions closing his cafes? They're all open up here, with people inside them and outside them, and have been since May.

makes you wonder why they couldnt hold the summit meeting at his family home . iunstead of making a circus out of cornwall. i hope they not hoping to view the lovely scenery whilst not addressing the problems at hand ......already causing enviromental issues with all that petrol/fumes/ and more plastic in the waters .

Ellianne Sun 13-Jun-21 10:12:26

No worries GG, I'm the opposite - I know everyone's birthdays, telephone numbers etc!
The Queen is amazing, but I bet she will want to get rid of the Bidens quickly today so she can have some time playing with her new puppy.

GrannyGear Sun 13-Jun-21 10:07:20

Ellianne. I'm sorry I got Wilfred's age wrong. I sometimes have difficulty remembering the ages of my own children and grandchildren!
My comment about the queen was intended to praise her devotion to carrying out her royal duties even the boring ones. I doubt if many of us would be so conscientious.
