‘National Yacht’, could the £200m be put to better use?

The Prime Minster announced a few weeks ago that a new Royal Yacht’ was going to be built. Buckingham Palace refused the idea and further more did not want it named after the late Prince Philip.
It is to be paid for by the MofD but used for businesses. Some men in power seem to build a monuments before they leave, could the estimated £200m be better spent on other things?

The NHS, education, and social care come to mind immediately.

There is another thread about this but yes there are countless other ways that money could be spent.

Another of Johnson's vanity projects.

Rosie51 Tue 22-Jun-21 09:46:29

We don't need this yacht, but one certainty is that if it is progressed it will finish up costing a lot more than £200m. Governments have a habit of not bringing projects to completion on budget. Total waste of money.

Is there anyone, just anyone, on GN, who would support the idea of this yacht? Anyone?

Parsley3 Tue 22-Jun-21 10:30:53

Not me. It is a ridiculous idea.

ginny Tue 22-Jun-21 10:36:05

Nor me. So many better things to spend the money on.

Ken Clarke on royal yacht: "silly populist nonsense".
This government in a nutshell.

Ilovecheese Tue 22-Jun-21 13:20:17

Would people on Gransnet have supported the yacht if the Royal Family had wanted it?

ginny Tue 22-Jun-21 13:20:53

No.

Whitewavemark2 Tue 22-Jun-21 13:22:42

No

nadateturbe Tue 22-Jun-21 13:36:25

Don't think it's a great idea, and will it be built here?

Dinahmo Tue 22-Jun-21 13:38:07

Lots of people still think it would be a good advert for GB trade. Some hopes.

SueDonim Tue 22-Jun-21 13:43:38

It’s a daft idea. Britannia was of its time and you can’t revisit the past. The new design I’ve seen, if that’s the final choice, looks a barge anyway.

timetogo2016 Tue 22-Jun-21 13:47:57

A stupid idea, and it will cost thousands upon thousands to run it.

I seem to remember another thread about this and I can think of several supporters of the project! Can’t remember the reasons given, I think it was a bit to do with flag waving …..

mokryna Tue 22-Jun-21 14:29:40

Oh sorry, it’s true there were two, one last May and the other in April. However, what’s getting my goat is that some people are calling it Royal and giving them a bashing when it wasn’t their idea and they don’t want any thing to do with it instead of the PM.

GillT57 Tue 22-Jun-21 14:57:36

Vanity project, made even worse by the times we are in. I do wish someone from the Royal Family would publicly decline the offer though.

varian Tue 22-Jun-21 18:27:51

I think the Royals are constrained when making public comments. "

What we get is a statement from "the palace" and it seems that "the palace" has made it clear they do not endorse this project and they absolutely do not want this ship named after Prince Phillip. That is as strong as a statement as we will get from "the palace".

From the gleam in Boris's eye yesterday he is still keen on the idea.

Out of touch? Even with the views of the Royal family it seems. Yes, that is definitely a No Thank You from the Palace, varian.

A vanity project - BJ has a reputation for such things. Millions were wasted on the failed Garden Bridge project in London.

No!
