I can bet almost 100% that if England continue in their winning streak that by the end off the Euros the booing will have stopped to be replaced by cheers. The boos are already much less.

Nothing succeeds like success and England’s football team should be proud of their courage in sticking to their determination to show their support for those minorities that are subjected to racist taunts and hatred.

“This England team represent everything Priti Patel is not.

Decent
Try to unite people
Proud of their varied backgrounds

My values are like them.

My values are not Priti Patel's values”

I love this. I certainly hope so
Thank you WWM2

Maybe wait until Wednesday to see if there is less booing from the crowds when the team take the knee. There were relatively few fans at the Rome stadium due to quarantine rules yet in a few days time there will be thousands. At the last match in Wembley they played music to try and drown out the sound of booing which could have made a difference.

Come on England!!!!

This government is nothing but a populist government. If England continue to win, just watch them row back on the comments that they have made regarding booing.

Who'd've thought we'd see the day when the England men's football manager and team have a better leader and are more genuinely educated, articulate, empathetic, capable, experienced, hard working and honourable than a chaotic bloody PM and his whole cabinet of thieves and liars?

lemongrove Sun 04-Jul-21 08:45:24

Got to hand it to you ww....you never give up on the anti-Conservative rhetoric, even working it into a thread ostensibly about praising English football. Reminds me of the Duracell bunny...?

And you never give up personalising your posts that take the rise out of posters without actually contributing anything of value.

I’m betting it it though

Anniebach Sun 04-Jul-21 08:48:36

And if their winning streak stops ?

Alima Sun 04-Jul-21 08:50:55

I doubt that will change her mind Annie, she will just plough on regardless.

GrannyGravy13 Sun 04-Jul-21 08:51:28

When the teams decided to take the knee they brought politics into sport/football.

Tokyo has banned taking the knee in the upcoming Olympic Games.

It is not the players that the minority of fans are booing it’s the symbolism imported from USA.

And if their winning streak stops ?

We shall see. But what a good model they are for the young. It is a pleasure to hear and see them. Marcus Rashford for one.

growstuff Sun 04-Jul-21 08:53:59

What do they actually object to about the symbolism?

Many football teams (not just in the UK) have been trying to combat racism for years.

vegansrock Sun 04-Jul-21 08:54:07

What’s the betting Johnson and co take the credit for the success of the football team ? At least it takes sleaze off the headlines which they will be grateful for.

There has been an anti-racism movement in UK football for many many years it’s called Kick Racism Out , no need to import an American one.

Anniebach Sun 04-Jul-21 08:58:28

Did they not boo a country’s National Anthem

Whitewavemark2 Sun 04-Jul-21 08:59:08

The absolute irony is that many of the English football team together with the young woman reaching the fourth round at Wimbledon simply would not be in England if Patel had had any say when they or their parents arrived.

lemongrove Sun 04-Jul-21 09:01:17

Of value to you maybe ww if that’s the way you want to look at it.
Your OP was fair enough....but then it went downhill when you started to introduce the real agenda, anti-Conservatism.
Football is tribal and many fans don’t like the constant taking the knee ( even some football players won’t do it) and I applaud the team for doing it to show all the other teams and followers that they want to kick out racism, after the Euros has
finished I hope that it may have made a slight difference, particularly if the team continue to do well.

Sparkling Sun 04-Jul-21 09:09:20

Gareth Southgate, has created a brilliant team, based on being inclusive, responsible and decent. He treats everyone the same and is just a good guy, he gets respect quite rightly. An excellent Manager. If the team play well and we are the better team, we will win tge cup, if not it will go to the better team. It was just lovely seeing the happiness in all those youngsters faces, it did my heart good.
I do not agree with taking the knee, a submissive gesture. Totally against it.Imported like a lot of cranky ideas from America. We are equal. I would not take the knee for anyone, with a few exceptions, they would have to be pretty special and gone over and above.

So what are the people actually booing?

Whitewavemark2 Sun 04-Jul-21 09:10:18

Nationalism, and nationalists of course are unable to see further than the country in which it resides, but these young men have their eyes lifted higher.

They are showing solidarity with all people of colour who suffer the racism and hatred. It doesn’t stop at the English border. That is why they are bending the knee they are in solidarity with all.

growstuff Sun 04-Jul-21 09:11:03

But you're not a footballer Sparkling. If the England team want to take the knee, what are you objecting to?

Gwyneth Sun 04-Jul-21 09:15:48

Why can’t we just enjoy the football instead of bringing politics into it yet again? I’m sure if there was a post about the weather someone would politicise it. So tedious and boring.

Whitewavemark2 Sun 04-Jul-21 09:20:41

It is weird, given the heading of this thread, that people then moan about just enjoying the football or even appearing to have not read it at all and then accusing me of introducing anti-conservative rhetoric.???.

Read the headline folks!!

What's political about being against racism?

Borussia Dortmund have been displaying anti-racist banners and selling anti-racist goods for years.

Football players have been used on posters to promote healthy lifestyles, such as more exercise and anti-smoking. They're role models for many. Why shouldn't they take a stance against racism? Their stance might influence some of their racist fans.
