Michael Gove: Leaked Tapes

Two things about this:

1. The timing of the leak is very suspicious. After all, these tapes have been around for decades.

2. If he were my son I would be deeply disappointed in him.

He’s keeping a low political profile at the moment isn’t he? we hardly hear anything from him and he’s never wheeled out as a spokesperson for the government even though he’s a lot brighter than some of the dimwits like Grant Shapps and Liz Truss who appear as thick as mince when they are under pressure. What’s Matt Hancock up to? Last I heard of him he was in a posh hotel with his lady friend - don’t know how they afford it with all that child maintenance and divorce and lower incomes.

GillT57 Tue 14-Sep-21 14:55:11

Yes Vegansrock he is keeping a very low profile indeed, which makes me suspicious. Meanwhile, the idiotic Truss, Shapps and Williamson run amok......but perhaps this is part of a cunning plan to make everyone else look smart. Williamson got off lightly on his Marcus Rashford gaff I thought, mainly due to the polite good humour of the two sportsmen involved. It is said that Liz Truss is presently involved in negotiations with the new Taliban administration to sell them our surplus pork. I would like to say this is a joke, but one never knows with these fools.

Michael Gove is getting divorced isn't he? I wondered if that was why he was lying low...that said wasn't he photographed at a rave recently? confused

BlueBelle Tue 14-Sep-21 15:41:49

What an arxx

GillT57 Tue 14-Sep-21 16:19:52

Yes Jane, he was filmed throwing shapes on a dance floor, wearing a suit. Having a great time by the looks of it too. Can you imagine being his teenage child? Cringe Dad.

In the 1987 extracts he certainly thought he was being funny. They were Oxbridge Union debates, where people like Gove and Johnson show off to their peers. Having been a keen debater at school, I went to one debate in my first term, and never bothered to go back.

One of the motions, about women being on top, was clearly designed to provide an evening of double entendres. Typical undergraduate humour; the only passage I found totally repellent was the one about Leon Brittan.

Framilode Tue 14-Sep-21 17:54:26

Grumppa He was not an undergraduate at the time of this speech. He was a journalist and an invited speaker.

Framilode Tue 14-Sep-21 17:59:23

I apologise, I was wrong about the above. He was in his final year at Oxford, it still doesn't excuse his remarks though.

Here he is!

FannyCornforth Tue 14-Sep-21 18:51:54

Ah! Double the fun! grin

JaneJudge Tue 14-Sep-21 18:59:13

he looks like me at a children's party, thanks god I'm not a sexist racist

FannyCornforth Tue 14-Sep-21 19:03:56

I’m ashamed to say that I had a little bit of a soft spot for him.
It seems that being a comic actor really was his strength.
It also seems to me that he could have a serious drug problem.
Our government, eh? sad

VioletSky Tue 14-Sep-21 19:04:00

Going to a rave and dancing badly would almost have me like him if there weren't so many reasons not to

trisher Tue 14-Sep-21 19:11:01

He was speaking at the Cambridge Union. It is undoubtedly the sort of place where such humour would be appreciated. He obviously knew his audience. A bunch of over-privileged, racist, sexist prats being enterained by one of their own.

Whiteclavel Tue 14-Sep-21 19:15:03

This man... In our government... Representing the UK...Not much different from Mr. Trump, not really...

Alegrias1 Tue 14-Sep-21 19:24:29

Ah, bless him. All on his own-some.

Not everyone who goes to Oxford or Cambridge is an over-privileged, racist, sexist prat trisher!

But everyone at the debate, now....

Although, to be fair, people were shouting "shame" at some of the things he was saying.

Whatdayisit Tue 14-Sep-21 20:07:05

Grumpaa I agree absolutely vile what he said about Leon Britton. Disgusting.

JaneJudge Tue 14-Sep-21 20:07:45

I have to go to Cambridge regular and my husband unfortunately has to work there

grannyactivist Tue 14-Sep-21 22:32:17

I must admit that when I actually heard the tapes one of my first thoughts was for his parents. A bit of projection on my part I know, but honestly if my son even thought the things Michael Gove gave utterance to I would truly be devastated.

The excuse that Gove’s comments were made in jest is just that, a rather pathetic excuse. What he said was, in my view, totally inexcusable. In 1993 he was already working as a political journalist and must have well known the controversy that he was courting with the use of his remarks.

MayBee70 Wed 15-Sep-21 00:08:29

I’ll never forget the way Gove used his fathers name during the referendum campaign and his father then publicly said that what Gove had said was a lie.

I agree. My partner went to Oxford and later to Cambridge. He comes from a working-class background and he's neither racist nor sexist. I don't think he's a prat either (although I guess I'm a bit biased).
