That interview was fascinating. We love Rory Stewart. He is a brilliant intellectual with integrity and experience.

It sad that so many decent politicians have gone off to do other things rather than stay in the Westminster sewer.
Though Rory Stewart always makes me think of Rupert Bear for some reason!

Isn't it rather naive to think that any died-in-the-wool supporter of any party, especially in this current age when party politics are so extreme and vitriolic, would have their views changed by an interview like this?

Look at all those Russians prepared to swear that everything Putin says about his current war is right, even when family members living in Ukraine send pictures of the house or flat Russian family members know and recognise, but is now a bombed out wreck.

Where is the difference between these Russians and

Tory grandees are allegedly on the move to rid themselves of Johnson.

Some because of Johnson's behaviour, some because they are angry about the money doled out, to help the cost of living crisis, last week.

Wishful thinking, Im sure many right wing Tories would not have given a penny over to the poor - let them starve!. On the other hand sensible MPs realise that votes need to be maintained at the next election.

Well, yes, some of them think that nothing should have been given out, and that just lowering taxation would have helped everyone anyway.

Can't see how that would work, at least in the short term. Immediate help was needed.

Still, if they vote him out, for whatever reason, then he's gone.

But, I'm not sure that would be best for Labour's chances - at the moment, Johnson must be their greatest asset.

Changes in the ministerial code will change nothing, wrongdoing will still get reported, it will be public opinion and acceptability of the allegation that will matter rather than any automatic action.

Really? I am very surprised...

Have you not noticed that public opinion is the very last thing that matters to this government?

That's harsh Maisie. Public opinion matters to them just before each and every election and until just after each election has passed wink

More from the fully paid up supporters of Stonewall. Whatever happened to democracy?

Having one's father born in Scotland and partial to tartan trews doesn't make you Scottish. wink

Sorry. And being partial...

I have no idea what his father's sartorial choices were. wink

Glasgow though volver what do you expect?! grin

Well we thought we were getting somebody who knew what they were talking about.

Sorry MaizieD, that was to Aveline.

That he told a Glasgow audience they had no experience of what it was like to have people of different cultures living in their city?

That he was an English MP who tried to tell the same audience that they were better together and they were really not understanding what he was telling them?

You're a lucky man, Rory. Just about got out of that venue in one piece.

A unionist and a man of principle? What's not to like?!

volver Sat 28-May-22 13:01:32

He has got particular ideas that are very conservative though. He's right of centre and he's a unionist who thinks Scotland and England are really just the same country.

I've given away my prejudices now. grin

However he does appear to be a man of principle, in a time when they seem to be few and far between.

Whitewavemark2 Sat 28-May-22 12:57:13

He no longer describes himself as a Tory. He says that he would stand as an independent if he ever stood again.

He says that he is a person who prefers to tackle issues in a practical way rather than with an ideological one. Although I’m not convinced that anyone does that.

volver Sat 28-May-22 11:30:18

I've said this before so sorry for repeating myself...

In our house he is know as "Rory the Tory" ? I heard him speak at an event a few years ago. I admire him for what he has done, but his grip of domestic politics is woeful. He was almost laughed out of the event and managed to alienate a big proportion of the people there.

He's definitely a Tory. Old style, but definitely a Tory.
