Meghan Markle Faced 'Disgusting and Very Real' Threats in the U.K., Former Counterterrorism Head Says

So possibly NOT figments of fevered imaginations.

In a new interview with Channel 4 News, the former head of counterterrorism for the Metropolitan Police said that there were genuine threats to the Duchess of Sussex's life while she lived in the U.K.

Neil Basu opened up about the alarming allegations amid his resignation as Assistant Commissioner for Specialist Operations for the Met Police in an interview released Tuesday. Basu, 54, is leaving the force after 30 years, during which he earned the Queen's Police Medal for distinguished service and served as the senior-most officer for the counterterrorism unit of the Met Police starting in March 2018 — two months before Meghan and Prince Harry's royal wedding.

"You were in charge of royal protection. How would you characterize the threats that Meghan and Harry received?" journalist Cathy Newman asked in a quick clip shared on Twitter.

"Well, disgusting and very real," Basu replied, calling extreme right-wing terrorism the "fast-growing threat" to the country.

Can’t see why it’s nasty to say it is best she stays away. It is. She has a young family, why would she take that risk ? Don’t read things and assume please.

moving to a country where you can go out in public to lead the normal life of a wealthy person

John Lennon moved to the USA because he thought it was safer. 🤔

What about other high profile Americans who have been gunned down or stabbed?

Lexisgranny Wed 30-Nov-22 10:01:34

Whereas I am definitely not trying to play down the truth that nasty and obvious threats were made, recently I have noticed there have been a number of court cases regarding stalking, threatening behaviour and even death threats. All of which must have been truly frightening for the victims involved.

I do not doubt the concern of the Duke of Sussex for the safety of his wife and family, any caring husband would react similarly. Fortunately, he was in a position to employ his own security staff, the problem was who should be paying for it as they are no longer working members of the Royal family and, as I understood it, private companies would not be allowed to use fire arms if they became necessary. Regrettably others have not been in a financial position to to employ 24 hour security staff and could only expect limited help from the police even though they have lived in this country and paid taxes.

Just as aside, it would be interesting to know how many threats are sent to members of the Royal family that are not made public.

Haha volver . Now your usual rudeness and sneering have started to shut down any debate, I'm out.

Debate. 🤣

OK.

Sorry, was that rude? There's no debate, is there? Some people will never accept any justification for the way M&H acted, even if the justification is that someone threatened to kill them. The response is often that they should have been more like the Queen.

Well they weren't. We'll all have to live with it.

And what about the ones that weren't?

Matched, or even surpassed, by the rudeness of other posters... hmm

I don't agree that death threats justified the unsubstantiated claims made against members of the RF, named and not named; the lies that were told and the attempted public trashing and back stabbing of Harry's family, by them both.

There is no justification for that as far as I'm concerned.

Callistemon21 Wed 30-Nov-22 10:08:51

I'm not surprised; there are some very sinister extremist groups out there and the internet enables them to spread their messages.

merlotgran Wed 30-Nov-22 10:09:06

And what about the ones that weren't?

I presume they’re still alive or died of natural causes just like the many celebrities in the U.K. who pay for their own security if they feel they need it.

If the RF didn’t have the best security available why is Harry suing the Home Office and why is Andrew throwing his toys out the pram because they’ve been denied it?

And America is a less violent country,
Let me think

Perhaps they thought that not being working members of the Royal Family would lessen the risk.

However, I do agree that America is not perhaps the safest country to choose, nor is maintaining such high public profiles.
But perhaps the advice they were given differed from my opinion!

So they are living in a gated community in California, with no doubt armed security guards. California has one of the lowest levels of gun related deaths in the US and has legislation that makes it illegal to photograph the children of celebrities while they are under 16. So now which is the safer place?

volver Wed 30-Nov-22 10:13:27

And...we're back on track for a M&H Thread

They've moved to Montecino(?), not Mogadishu.

Oreo Wed 30-Nov-22 10:16:32

I know there were a couple of people in a far right group who were jailed here for their part in plotting online violence towards Harry for marrying a non white woman. They lived in the UK but had eastern European names. There were bound to be other threats, online and hate mail as well, since everybody who is a celeb or a royal bets them.
Yeah, moving to the US wasn’t the safer option!

Smileless2012 Wed 30-Nov-22 10:17:29

As you say Callistemon, not being working members of the RF may well have been viewed as a way of lessening the risk by reducing their profile. However, they've countered that with everything they've done and said since.

Callistemon21 Wed 30-Nov-22 10:17:56

So they are living in a gated community in California, with no doubt armed security guards

Presumably they venture out from time to time?

Still safer here😂
California is still awash with guns compared to the UK.

Nowhere is 100% safe. There are risks in both countries and the higher the profile, the greater the risk.

Iam64 Wed 30-Nov-22 10:24:51

No surprise that information from a credible source is dismissed or minimised.

Oreo Wed 30-Nov-22 10:29:47

What do you want posters to do Iam64 ?
It’s old news.
Of course she and Harry got threats from far right nutters.
No harm came to them here though. They didn’t leave the RF because of that but cos they wanted to live a different way .
They are no safer in the US, probably less so.

Mamie Wed 30-Nov-22 10:29:48

It was one of the best and most powerful interviews I have ever seen. He spoke in deeply felt but measured tones about the threat from the far right, current Home Office policies towards refugees, the murder of Sarah Everard and this...
Asked whether he regretted being seen as “woke”, Basu responded: “Are you alert to issues of racial and social justice? Yes I am. And if that is the definition of woke, I’ll wear it as a bumper sticker every day of the week.”
Minimising what happened to the Duchess of Sussex is, in my opinion, tasteless in the extreme, given this evidence.

It seems to me that anyone who is in the public eye is apt to receive vile abuse from media trolls. I don’t think I would want to be famous for that reason.

I read that before they were married Harry and Meghan received a white powder substance in the post that turned out to be harmless. Then there was abuse on social media. It’s not just about feeling safe though, it’s the vileness of it all that is sickening. So now we know it was for real but should not have been unexpected in the current world. JK Rowling regularly receives death threats too.

merlotgran Wed 30-Nov-22 10:41:55

Basu stated, “We had teams investigating it. People have been prosecuted for those threats.”

Maybe we need to hear more about successful measures to combat hate crime. It might balance things out rather than endless criticism.

We’re not a perfect country. Nowhere is.

Namsnanny Wed 30-Nov-22 11:21:00

Smileless2012

I agree Normandygirl, nothing substantive to discuss. It's appalling that anyone would have death threats against them and surprising to me, that this was never mentioned at the time they made their decision to leave the UK.

That's a very good point smileless2012

She as a person is history now and no longer worth discussing. Of no importance really.

The length of this thread would suggest otherwise.

volver Wed 30-Nov-22 11:35:03

She as a person is history now

That's a bit threatening, isn't? To say that about a living person? Like maybe someone is going to send the boys round...
