A Met Police diplomatic protection officer today admitted to being a serial sex attacker guilty of 24 rapes over nearly 20 years serving with the force.

David Carrick, 48, who was known to his colleagues as 'Bastard Dave' pleaded guilty to a total of 49 offences against 12 women between 2003 and 2020.

The Met has apologised to victims after it emerged Carrick came to the attention of police over nine incidents including allegations of rape, domestic violence, and harassment between 2000 and 2021.

I've just been reading that lemsip. Isn't it absolutely dreadful?

MaizieD Mon 16-Jan-23 12:54:50

It's misogyny writ large, isn't it?

The worry is how deeply is it ingrained in the Met?

M0nica Mon 16-Jan-23 13:07:22

Words fail me.

rafichagran Mon 16-Jan-23 13:17:18

Shocking and sickening.

The worry is how deeply is it ingrained in the Met?

Very deeply.

AGAA4 Mon 16-Jan-23 13:19:40

I've just seen this on BBC news. Why was he still allowed to work as a police officer when he had been accused of rape and other officers had concerns about the way he behaved towards women?

IrishDancing Mon 16-Jan-23 13:19:45

Words fail me …

Fleurpepper Mon 16-Jan-23 13:20:41

Same question Maizie- this is seriously worrying and upsetting.

welbeck Mon 16-Jan-23 13:23:45

i don't think it's only the Met, nor only police; military also, and lots of other organisations.
the underlying attitudes are widespread; look at the following of andrew tate among young boys.

who was known to his colleagues as ...

Says it all really - so much of this behaviour is known and tolerated at The Met. Sarah Everard's murderer was also a known as...

No doubt lessons will be learned. FFS!

Oldbat1 Mon 16-Jan-23 13:24:45

Shocking! His behaviour must surely have sent out warnings that he was of a dubious character! But obviously not. Horrific.

CvD66 Mon 16-Jan-23 13:29:02

It is stunning to read that this scandal is the real reason that Cressida Dick was ousted. Many of Carrick's attacks included violence, intimidation and humiliation. Despite reports about him and his abhorrent views being well known, he was promoted to serve in the same team as Couzens (Sarah Everard's killer). Claims of domestic abuse or sexual offence against 1000 Met police are now under review. What a huge cost to the UK taxpayer. How has this been allowed to grow to this level!?

AGAA4 Mon 16-Jan-23 13:33:58

Nothing seems to change in the Met. Why aren't the red flags that these men send out and are noticed by others acted upon. It may have saved many women from abuse and even murder.

MerylStreep Mon 16-Jan-23 15:00:25

Not surprised, not shocked: it’s what some of them do 🤬

dogsmother Mon 16-Jan-23 15:03:56

Appalling!

lovebeigecardigans1955 Mon 16-Jan-23 15:04:32

I read about this earlier on Mumsnet and I'm almost speechless. How come he got away with this for so long? The MET again, too.

grannydarkhair Mon 16-Jan-23 15:05:42

I’m thinking back to last year when I started a thread about Sir Mark Rowley, the new head of the Met. He said at that time there were about 100 officers who were deemed unsuitable to directly face the public (or words to that effect).
I’m assuming this horrible man was one of them, and makes me wonder what other horrors are going to come out?

Charleygirl5 Mon 16-Jan-23 15:13:31

I read online his name was known to the police before he applied and joined the police force. I hope he is locked up for many years.

Wyllow3 Mon 16-Jan-23 15:24:38

Angry. And inclined to agree Cressida Dick let a culture like this remain and clearly new leadership needed.

Surprised.? No. We've had enough indications already.

I think one of the scary thing is it shows just how prevalent this sort of male behaviour still flourishes despite all the efforts of women - and some men - to change it. Well, domestic violence stats support this.

sodapop Mon 16-Jan-23 19:48:19

The latest police Commissioner has said he is determined to root out all the Officers who are known to have offended. So far I think there are 1000. Colleagues must also be complicit with some of these offences. Women should be able to trust the police or am I being naive.
It's a great shame for the many Officers who do their job well and are trustworthy.

Iam64 Mon 16-Jan-23 20:39:56

I’ve only heard the headlines, which are shocking.
I immediately thought about Cressida Dick and the extent of misogyny during her leadership

MerylStreep Mon 16-Jan-23 21:01:00

And the people who nodded him through are drawing their pensions while playing golf in Spain.

Galaxy Mon 16-Jan-23 21:35:00

I dont have the words.

Grammaretto Mon 16-Jan-23 21:44:30

The MET attracts people like this, sadly.
If your own DC was a police officer would you honestly be happy for them to join this force?
I know I would not.
