Braverman attempts a cover up.

She asked her civil servants to try two things after speeding

1. to arrange a completely safety private course to avoid being reported

2. then she asked to be entered for a course anonymously.

They refused as it was not in their remit.

So she took the points.

This was reported widely as in including the Guardian and the Mail, but its become an issue for two reasons

the attempted cover up
and asking civil servants to collude with the cover up.

Its the second which in my mind is possibly the most reprehensible.

Both speak to her character however - "I am different, I am better, I can be above the law. (and I want to hide my wrong-doings)

Hopefully, another nail in the coffin, tho unlikely to be a sackable offence?

As this happened last summer why has it taken until now to come out why not call it out straight away if it is so wrong

pascal30 Mon 22-May-23 09:49:48

When I had to do it, for driving 5 miles ph above the limit, I did it on-line... why couldn't she?

Because the tories are looking for an excuse to get rid of her.

Notice how Sunak is distancing himself.

She is no longer a member of his team, look how she has criticised no 10 over the past couple of weeks.

This is no 10 hitting back.

There’s so much embroidery going on on this forum and in the msm. It puts the Guild of Master Embroiderers to shame.
In order for more transparency in leaking information about government and its ministers, I think it is important for democracy that newspapers are made to name their sources. This is done through an application to the courts.
It is true that Rishi Sunak was trying to govern in a much less sensational manner than Boris Johnson and I guess this wasn’t selling news. Hence the kickback.
We need to be reassured that the impartiality of the Civil Service is being maintained at all times.

The tories aren't looking for an excuse to get rid of her 😂 Labour are because she's popular and her Illegal Migration Bill is a vote winner.

As I've quoted before
'If you're over the target that's when you get the flax' and Suella Braverman is certainly over the target and spot on with this bill.

ronib she did it. There’s no embroidery in that statement at all.

It doesn’t matter who, if anyone, is looking to get rid of her if she’s arrogant and self-entitled enough to provide the weapons and the ammunition.

ronib Mon 22-May-23 10:08:49

I hope Rishi Sunak has the sense to see that leaky government is a threat to good governance.
We need full confidence that the Civil Service is impartial and we need to have accountability from those people dripping away in the background.
This is manipulation at the highest level and it should be stopped.

The course is a privilege and not offered to everyone apparently. I can't remember who gets offered it. It's a way of getting out of fines and points.

I think it's a bit like arguing about compensation that you aren't actually entitled to but is a "good will" offer.

Also... why did her office say there was no speeding charge 4 times to the media?

Caramme Mon 22-May-23 10:13:36

No one knows the truth of this yet. It will be interesting to know where this leak came from.

ronib Mon 22-May-23 10:21:03

NotSpaghetti do you think it’s possible that SB’s office did not know about the speeding violation? After all, why on earth should they know when it is a PRIVATE matter after all. It would have been so wrong for SB to have involved her publicly funded staff surely?

You are completely wrong! People are encouraged to do the online course rather than the classroom based one. You still see who everybody else is but you don’t reveal surnames, just first names. They have severely cut down on the classroom ones. I did one recently and you still have to pay, I think I paid about £80. I very nearly took the points and fine because I didn’t want to do it online and there were no classroom ones anywhere near me.

I thought she asked because she has protection people as a Minister and was trying to work out how to take them all with her to an awareness course. In the end she paid a fine and took the points which will affect her insurance.

Where did you get that idea from?

She could have done the course online from anywhere with an internet connection. Nobody would have known where she was.

They would have recognised her unusual name though and her face!! It’s all a bit happy clappy, you introduce yourself by first name and you see who everybody is. No surnames are given or addresses but people do say things like “I am in the north of the county” etc.

The course is offered if you haven''t done one before and have a clean licence (it's possible to have had points before which have expired). It doesn't get you off the fine, it's just a cheaper fine if you do the course. It only lets you off the points.

Primrose53 Mon 22-May-23 10:40:59

It’s a load of fuss over nothing! All she did was ASK if it was possible to do the test privately. She was told it wasn’t so accepted the fine and points. It was a year ago so someone, somewhere has sat on this info until they thought the timing was right!

growstuff Mon 22-May-23 10:43:14

I'm not even sure that it's cheaper than paying the fine (could be wrong). It's only for minor issues, for those with clean licences and you can only do one every so many (three?) years.

The only real advantage is that you don't get points and it doesn't have to be declared for insurance purposes.

I can understand why she would want to attend a private course - there would be a security issue for a start, she couldn’t attend without bodyguards. When that turned out not to be possible she paid the fine and took the points. Speeding is a common enough offence. Misbehaviour? Miscreant behaviour? Come on!

Totally agree. I'm not a fan, but she's a lawyer she knows, or should do how this should be played.

No, Braverman herself has caused this by her own behaviour. She doesn't have many friends in the Conservative Party, so I'd look at them, if I were you.

If she had been that worried about being recognised she could have just paid the larger fine and taken the points. No-one would have been any the wiser.

I think that she was just being a cheapskate. What else would one expect of someone who claimed for her parent's heating bills because she occasionally stayed at their house (£25,000 is a figure I've seen) hmm

The fact that she doesn't appear to know, isn't the greatest recommendation for somebody who holds one of the great offices of state.

Don't forget Sunak's pledge about “integrity, professionalism and accountability at every level”.

growstuff Mon 22-May-23 10:48:25

Maizie The fine is the same.

I don't think she was being a cheapskate. I think she was being arrogant and thought her lofty position meant that she's entitled to something other people aren't.
